The Geography of Basketball Recruiting

I have just become a big time basketball recruiting junkie (unlike football which I have been for some time) first of all, 247 is apparently is terrible while scout is awesome. Also, everybody recruits in Indianapolis. Kentucky has at least two prospects, so does OSU, Louisville and IU do as well. Per capita, easily the most basketball talent. Chicago has a ton of talent as well. Though again more people. DC does very well. NYC is like the Texas of college basketball. A three star there is better than a good amount of 4 stars from other places. Chicago is really better now than it has been. NYC is going down a bit. Indianapolis is probably the most consistent overall.

And as far as North East basketball. As dirty as all get out, but the reason it is so good is because those kids have usually graduated. Semaj Christon and Tu Holloway both went to prep schools.

Philly is a huge area as well. Schools like 'Cuse and Nova have a really strong pipeline of Philly studs.

The Indy Star did an article 2 or 3 years ago and it showed Indy had more kids in the NBA than any other city at that time. I wouldn't be surprised if by percentage of population it is #1 as well.

"In 49 states, it's basketball, but this is Indiana."

Infographics: Where Do High School Basketball Stars Come From, And Where Do They Go?

I remembered reading this a while back, and this topic reminded me of it. Some pretty good visualizations to shed some light on the subject.

(Spolier: Indiana and Maryland produce the best players on a per capita basis.)

Indiana, living up to its reputation, may have the strongest high school basketball tradition in the country. With 41 All-Americans in 36 years, Indiana has produced more talent than Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Georgia, all significantly larger states, and trails only Illinois, New York, and California. Adjusting for population size, the Hoosier State blows the field away.
