Callahan doesn't squash Keller speculation

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska coach Bill Callahan did nothing Tuesday to squash speculation that Arizona State quarterback Sam Keller plans to join the Cornhuskers.
Several media outlets, without naming sources, have reported that Keller will transfer to Nebraska, sit out this season and play his senior season in 2007.
Callahan called reports that Keller's transfer to Nebraska is imminent "mere speculation."
"I'd like to talk to you further about it, but the NCAA has restricted my ability to speak about it because he's a (recruitable) prospect," Callahan told reporters. "All I can tell you is he has been granted permission and has been given a release by Arizona State to Nebraska."
Backup quarterback Joe Ganz said offensive coordinator Jay Norvell called him to tell him Keller might be on his way to Lincoln.
Callahan confirmed that he also had talked to at least two quarterbacks about a possible newcomer.
"The way I look at our job here at Nebraska is to try to find the best players in the country and try to recruit them and elevate our talent level," he said. "That's what will make us a good football team."
As of late Tuesday afternoon, Keller had not enrolled at Nebraska.
Keller's father, Mike Keller, told ESPN.com on Tuesday night that his son was still weighing his options.
"Nebraska is excited about Sam and anybody would be excited to have him as a leader," Mike Keller told ESPN.com. "Bill runs a pro-style offense, some call it West Coast, and they'd love to have somebody with Sam's experience come in. He's mature and would be working with young quarterbacks for a season. You know, I'm not trying to play games or play schools against one another, but I can't say it's finalized yet."
Keller started seven games for Arizona State last season. He completed 58 percent of his passes for 2,165 yards and 17 touchdowns before breaking his thumb.
ASU coach Dirk Koetter announced Friday that Keller would be the Sun Devils' starting quarterback. But Sunday Koetter reversed course and named Rudy Carpenter his starter. Keller then asked for his release.
