So... I've dipped my toe in a Vegan diet

Its a texture thing. sorry about disliking tofu I didn't know this was an issue so near and dear to your heart.

I wasn't trying to be a d!ck, homie. I was just trying to be funny in an attempt to figure out what it was about tofu you didn't like. Because if it was the taste, then I wanted to clarify that it doesn't have a specific taste.

As Jayhawk mentioned though, it also doesn't always have to have the same texture. There are three types of tofu.

Silken tofu is almost always called for specifically in a recipe, so I won’t talk about it much here, but basically it’s smoother, often used in desserts or spreads, and usually comes in a tetra pack, which makes it a handy type to bring camping or to use for stocking your bomb shelter.

Tub tofu is probably the most common kind you’ll find in the supermarket. It comes in a tub that usually has a bunch of water in it too. Adding to the complexity, it often comes in different densities or firmness levels; typically soft, medium, and extra firm. Even when it’s marked as firm, it’s still pretty soft.

Brick tofu looks like a brick, and instead of being packed in water, it’ll usually be wrapped in plastic and look almost vaccuum packed. This tofu is super-mega-firm, and it’s still easy to break up, but it’s also the easiest to slice or cube without everything falling apart.

So, you can have tofu in a variety of textures as well. For instance, the tofu in the sloppy joe's (I know you still dislike sloppy joes, so this doesn't really help you) is a completely different texture than say... the tofu cut up in stir fry.

Furthermore, there are also other meat substitutes like Tempeh and Seitan (my favorite, great for phillies) that both have their unique textures/tastes.

Mushroom based chicken-substitute patties... well, I have never met someone that could tell the difference between them and real chicken patties.

I'm not sure I could stop eating meat. Hell, I get headaches when I haven't had enough meat in a day...

On the health topic there is this thread too. I want to try a part time vegan diet like three days a week, but my wife won't buy in on it yet. She does the vast majority of the cooking, so I need her on board if I'm gonna do it. How's it going with the vegan diet Wooly?

I'm totally not kidding with this. My wife has been getting on me to lose some weight and I simply am being sick of feeling like crap all of the time. I listened to a great interview with Arian Foster (vegan) the other weekend and he talked about how a switch needs to turn on in your mind where you "eat to nurish your body, not your emotions". That hit me hard. It's absolutely true. In this country, every holiday or gathering is centered around food. So Americans have been programmed to eat out of comfort instead of nourishment.

So I told my wife that I would dip my toe in this diet for the following reasons:

1) To get healthy
2) To do my part to stave off commercial animal farming
3) To do my part to lower greenhouse gases (cow poo is a larger portion of our country's carbon footprint than automobiles.).
4) Because she is doing it and I want to support her

So I started at the beginning of the week and it was pretty tough at first. No milk, no eggs no cheese. I also am constantly looking at labels to not only make sure that there are no animal products, but also to find foods that are high in things like protein, calcium and Vitamin D which are things veggies generally lack. These were the hardest, but now (just like Arian Foster promised) I feel lighter, happier and have WAY more energy after just over one week.

Here is what I had for lunch:

a six inch veggie delight with all of the veggies (sans devil tomatoes) with oil/vinegar, salt/pepper, and sweet onion sauce. I had a side of apple slices and a diet coke. The whole meal was delicious, filling, cheap and under 400 calories.

So... are there any vegan diet folks on here that want to share some of their meals? Anybody want to tell me i'm retarded?

My wife and I did this for Lent two years ago and found cheese the most difficult thing to give up. My blood pressure improved dramatically and many of my coworkers commented on how my face had thinned out and my skin looked "amazing".

As a guy, these aren't things we find ourselves consumed with but it no doubt had a positive effect on my overall health. My first recommendation is buy indian spices and research indian dishes. My second recommendation is find a good indian restaurant nearby.
