It's amazing how much he looks physically like Tuitt (who IMO is a walking prototype for a 3-4 DE). If he can put it all together he can be a force.

Agreed, I think there has been a disconnect between where Jarron is in the coaches eyes and his own. With that said it sounds like that gap is starting to close. In regards to looking like Tuitt the comparisons at this point stop there.

With Kona out and Nix's status in question Kelly suggests he will see some snaps with Stockton at NT. Hope he makes the best of this opportunity

Yep. If we whiff on NTs this recruiting cycle Jones and Springmann will be the two-deep at NT.

I wonder if Sam Mustipher will get moved to the Defensive side of the ball. Profile lists him as G/NT. If Kelly lands Mama we'd still have 2 superior OLine classes back to back.

I was just wondering the same thing when I saw Mustipher's thread bumped today. I think of Mustipher as more of a Stephon Tuitt/Isaac Rochell body type better suited to DE than DT, and I think we probably have enough of those guys. It might make sense to move him if he could contribute immediately though, because at the very least it would allow Jones to move to NT full time along with Springmann.

Of course, we will hopefully still land a real NT like Matt Elam.

I always liked Springmann and after the Pitt game where he dominated when everyone else was sick, I had very high expectations for him this year. I really believe he will tear it up his last two years here.

Jones has done nothing but struggle...I hope he gets his mean on and gets physical. If not he will get buried behind the likes of ...everyone.

I don't think you move Mustipher. He is the same deal as Montelus - could he play D-line, yes, but he would only be good there as opposed to potentially great at guard.

We will be a primarily 4-3 team next year IMO, and will have plenty of guys that could be utilized inside: Day, Jones, Springman, Hounshell, Matuska, Dickerson

4-3 is the future...THANK GOD!

NG is great if you find a nix...if not give me 4 athletic pass rushers that can also tear it up on st while developing.

“@ISDUpdate: Kelly: Jarron Jones would be 1st guy to rotate in for Nix this wk. Played well vs. Navy. Good possibility he's at Nose in future.”

Yeah I don't really get why people are so surprised by this. Our next in line nose this year is the 6'6 Tony Springman, who is most similar in build on this team to a one Jarron Jones.

Neither one of them has elite pass rushing moves, but they are huge space eaters that get a good push on passing downs to collapse the pocket, and hold up well in the run game. What more do you really want out of a nose guard? Nix is an elite, elite guy that is really rare in his ability to play both the run while not sacrificing pass rushing skills. I am more than happy with my nose guards going forward occupying two OL so our other D linemen and LBs can flow to the ball and make plays.

FWIW, I recall TP praising his short yardage and goal line work early in fall practice.

Exactly. Jones seems to not be overly agressive, but also extremely hard to push around. If that is the case, I'd actually rather have him in the middle closing down a couple of lanes, than struggling to get any pressure on the QB.

I think next year we are still echnically a 3-4, but with Day, Jones, Rochelle, and Ishaq, we'll look an awful lot like a 4-3.

WE NEED A GOOD MLB!

To be a good/serviceable NT all you have to do is effectively take up space and blockers. Should be easy to do at Jones' size.

I like it.

And if Tuitt comes back, next year's DL could look like (assuming a 3-4 base):

Day---Springmann---Tuitt

Rochelle---Jones---Hounshell

Matuska---Freshman---Freshman

Then add in Williams and Okwara to put their hand down on some plays at DE...and add basically any of the 2-deep guys above to be able to play DT when that happens.

I've lost sleep ever since EV stayed home with Granny worrying about next year's DL. I'm feeling better.

While I agree with this assessment for the most part, if a NG can be blocked 1 on 1 then we lose our advantage. The NG needs to be physical enough, in most cases, to require two blockers there for freeing up the LB's. Specifically look at Stanford to Oregon last night. Arik Armstead who's a big body guy, was 1 on 1 almost all night. That definitely played a part in Stanford because able to run down there throat. Now thats not the only reason but it does play a role. I'm not surprised that we are going to play Jones there, I'll be surprised if he has success there. I just don't think I've seen him be physical enough yet. With that said, an off season of weight training and beefing up could do wonders.

On a slightly related note, if we mostly had four down lineman, then could Councell and Smith both play opposite side outside linebacker with one middle linebacker? Our linebacker depth issues look a lot more manageable when we have

Councell - Grace - Smith as our three guys as opposed to

Williams - Moore? - Grace - Smith/Councell

Wait! You are all saying we are short on d-linemen, and you want to move to a scheme featuring one more?

Moving to a 4-3 would actually add to the numbers because Okwara, Williams, and any CAT LB's on the roster would be playing DE.

I understand and mean no disrespect.

Williams will probably move to DE anyway. He has been doing really well there. Romeo, he the CAT next year. Do you agree? Looks like he is coming on STRONG!
