I'm sure most of you have watched the clips on UND.com or other sites of the Irish practices, Weis press conferences, etc. That said, what are your impressions so far? Anything you like or dislike? Anything worry or excite you?

They seem very focused.

The Freshman seem to see that they are really needing to fight for a spot. And it's clear they are convinced they can get a starting spot through hard work. That a good thing!

The new D-Backs look agressive. They really look like they will contribute SOON.

Munir Prince looks fast!

Weis is definitely a tough teacher.

It really seems clear to me that the team knows what it needs to focus on...(defense)

As stated before the team looks really focused and obviously that is because the returning players no what to expect this year and have taken a leadership role. I think this year we will see the benefit of early admission of students. Already Young is pushing to start. I'm excited for the Ga Tech game. I really hope Prince turns into a gamebreaker but I don't know if it will happen this year.

The blurb I read in the Sunday paper is that the freshmen are very good and many of them are going to see early minutes (see Young, Walls, McNeil and Prince).

Weis claims the defense is better and faster. Let's hope so.

Samardzija hasn't skipped a beat so far. Hands are as soft as ever, as he appears to be catching everything that comes his way.

As long as the D plays a lot smarter and prevents those big plays...I will be happy. We will play for the NC...or have 1 loss.

Man, this season looks good. Let's pray for no nasty surprises.

Saw clips from practice on Saturday and Pricne took one down the sidelines and is as fast as everyone says. Lightning fast!!

Travis Thomas put a helmet tattoo in Asaph Schwapps's chest and all you saw was TT on top and the bottoms of Schwapp's shoes facing the clouds while in the air. Other players were hooting and hollering. Unreal.

Young and Carufel look solid. Young looks like he has been playing college football for years.

Walls will be a great one.

I am REALLY excited about Yeatman. I think he will be huge for this offense. He don't go down easy.

I have been reading in other threads what some people have been saying about the team from watching the videos so far. I am sure we will see improvement but I guess I dont understand how some people can be so optimistic from the little snips of practice we are seeing. Practice is practice. We wont officially know where we stand until Georgia Tech. If someone drops a pass or a defensive back gets beat some people are thinking that things wont turn around. Its like there is this "oh great, not again" feeling. How can they be an expert from watching a 7 minute clip of drills? I dont know, thats my rant. Correct me if I am wrong.

You are right...practice is ONLY practice. And it proves nothing. I remember every year Ty and Davie were here. In Practice we could beat ANYONE!!!

That being said, if you keep hype out of it, you can at least see where some guys as Freshman look better/worse than upper classmen...and it gives you a bit of perspective.

I think you will find that Freshman DBs look better in practice than reality...cause its not real game speed.

For guys like Munir Prince, practice probably shows a bit more.

Charlie's hair is getting grayer, I've noticed that. I sort of agree with texan. I was about to say that Richard Jackson looked slow, but I'm basing that on one pass drill where McNeil covered him like a glove and one cone drill. That's not really fair. But saying shwapp looks like a beast and McNight is ripped, well that's just obvious. Reading what the coaches comments are fair game and it seem like two freshman have stood out, Young and Prince. I'm real suprised by Prince. They are saying the defense is faster, that makes me feel all tingly inside. So those are my thoughts chief.

Is it sept. 2nd yet????

I can only Imagine what Sammy Young will be like in his Junior/Senior seasons. Wow

I agree with the post above that if the defense can just be less suceptible to the big play we are lookin very good.

One of my favorite players from pracice is Grimes. He looks quick as heck.

If he stays healthy, he is going to be a 1st-2nd round pick in the NFL draft.

I like the intensity of the practices, and the one thing I have always agreed with is you will play with the same intensity that you practice...

from what little we have actually seen we appear to be in better physical shape and speed seems to be picking up...again that being said speed kills but putting yourself in the right position and playing smart are in my estimation far more important. As CW stated with TT being able to make up for mistakes with speed is a saving grace...

Not really. No one is going to audition for time during the Georgia Tech game, especially since it is an opener. All of the evaluating is going on right now.

You win your mintues and place on the two deep in practice each week.

The more a guy is healthy and gets reps in practice, it only becomes a matter of time before he gains real time in games.

I'm going stricly by what Weis is saying directly to the press, at least the guys he is on speaking terms with these days. Apparently, some of these freshmen are going to get on the field.

On a side note, I did read that Toryan Smith got into the doghouse because of a special teams blunder. Weis got on him pretty hard, but Smith rose to the challenge and made some plays.

I've said this before on another thread. The best way to gauge the teams performance as a whole is to listen closely to Charlie's post-practice press conferences. He pulls no punches and is a straight shooter with the scribes as well as his players. If he likes the way the team is progressing so far, that's good enough for me. Individually, some observations;

Sam Young: Seems like the coaches are working on him staying a little lower firing off the snap and perhaps a little wider base. On than that, he's solid.

George West: Incredibly quick feet.

Darrin Bragg: Has a really long stride which is a huge advantage on slant and other "quick-hit" patterns.

Victor Abiamiri: Has really muscled up. Should allow him to man-handle some of the lesser capable tackles this season.

I think Sam Young is a tank and Prince is really fast. I don't think TT is looking all that great at LB, but I trust the coaches. Also, how much do you guys think Darrin Bragg will play?

This is a great question in light of DJ Hord being out for the year. I'm not really sure what to make of him myself because there isn't much of a sample to go by other than a sweet 40 yard catch from Sharpley at the Blue and Gold Game.

We'll see how much he gets on the field come 9/2/2006. I have a feeling Grimes is going to be the third WR in the end.

I'm going to re-post, with all humility, my post from the "freshman playing time" thread of a couple of months ago.

Freshman playing time
Jigga makes the best point. It's the kids who raises their hand when Charlie
asks......"Alright, who wants to be on the kickoff team?"
The most exciting thing is that they all will have their shot to play.
Charlie's teams, like Belichick's and Parcell's, are meritocracies. If you can play
and perform, you will play. The more quality players that Charlie feels can perform
and that he can trust with making good decisions, the less the depth chart matters.
I see Charlie rotating his receiving corps much more than last year. Samardjiza off
for a play for a three tight end formation of Carlson, Freeman and Reuland.
Those three off for a five wide formation of Samardjiza, McKnight, Hord, Grimes
and Gallup. And so on and so on.
Don't forget that Charlie, in his current recruiting efforts, is looking for SPEED!
Look for guys who have it to get extra long looks.....Gallup, Prince, Grimes, et. al.

Now that D.J. is done for the year, I'm throwing Bragg into the equation.

So it is confirmed DJ Hord is out for the year? was it his Achilles?

Charlie reported that in a press conference on 8/6: Banda career ending injury, Hord achilles tendon out for the season, Harris, Anastasio, and Aldridge injured but expected to play in the season.

If I recall correctly Hord's injury was sustained lifting weights. I think it was the only injury where any details were provided.
