1 question....

WHY THE HELL WASN'T I AWARE OF SILK ROAD??!!!

Nothing like dealing with a potential ASU loss like a kilo of booger sugar and a night at the Spearmint Rhino...Sheesh

But really...insane that people were actually buying drugs online at that volume and nobody picked it up before.

Feds have been aware of the Silk Road for years, it just took some time for the government to figure out a way to infiltrate the Tor network and pierce the anonymity veil behind the users. The feds laid the groundwork for taking down the Silk Road when they shut down and arrested the guy behind Freedom Hosting back in August (accused of facilitating child porn). See more here-->Feds Are Suspects in New Malware That Attacks Tor Anonymity | Threat Level | Wired.com

Frankly I'm surprised the Silk Road guy didn't shut down operation and flee the country or something. Pretty obvious the feds would go after Silk Road next, considering Tor security was greatly compromised.

Chuck Schumer did. Read his self-congratulatory promo at the bottom of the article I linked in my first post.

...
In response to the Silk Road takedown, Senator Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., who urged federal authorities to go after the site in 2011, said:

“Sayonara to Silk Road. Over two years ago, I called on the DEA and DOJ to put the kibosh on this outrageous virtual illegal-drug bazaar, and I am pleased that today they hung a ‘Closed for Good’ sign on Silk Road’s door. “I congratulate the DEA agents and the law enforcement personnel at the Department of Justice for their hard and successful work in shutting down this marketplace, which in only two and a half years generated a staggering $1.2 billion in sales of drugs, computer hacking material, and other illegal and dangerous goods.* The country is safer now that this open market for law-breaking has been shuttered.”

You can make your own Bitcoins but it takes damn near forever. There is a finite number of bitcoins that can be made. As that number approaches zero the value of a bitcoin goes up. The current price of a bitcoin is $128US. (source: https://www.mtgox.com/ )

The sole purpose is to have a currency that is untraceable and not under government interference.

A few of my employees (super tech geeks) "mine" bitcoins with multiple servers with multiple GPUs. All about math computations. One of them has like 20+ grinding out 24x7. His electric bill is huge.

No, just those d-bags.

Agreed. Just trying to lighten things up a bit. It's what I do --- most of the time. While I may (by age) fit the NDNation model I don't in overall attitude.

I don't know much about Bitcoin, but from what I've read it is cyber-custom made for such off-the-books bullshit.

I hereby announce the creation of Dshanskies, an electronic currency. Currently they trade at a tenth of a cent $USD. I accept Paypal and all major credit cards except Discover. All transactions, licit or illicit are protected by my Mac+ created firewall.

GET IN ON THE GROUND FLOOR!

Yeah, that's wrong. It's just a cyber-currency. It's no more "custom made" for illegal transactions than hard cash is custom made for in-person drug deals. It just works a lot better for those transactions because paypal, ACH, wire transfers, etc. all leave a paper trail whereas cyber-currencies are instant, free and paperless (but NOT necessarily anonymous).

Really? It's def. anonymous to the user whether I'm actually Santa Clause living in the South pole or not.... People with multiple url's and know when and when not to use the likes of a 'Facebook' will be able to live.... those that can't see what can happen after it already is allowing us to see...... GODSPEED!!!

It's definitely anonymous in most transactions, but somehow the feds have been able to trace who sent what to whom in their investigation of Silk Road. I'm not exactly sure how they were able to do it, but considering that fact I'd be hesitant to call it "100% anonymous".

Pure genius. Kid sets up his own version of Ebay for drug dealers to peddle their bags of goodies and rakes in the profits. I hope he was smart enough to bury some of that cash under some tree.

that'd be cool.... if it were the man behind the picket fence..

I'm so ****ing lost with the whole bitcoin thing.

And very curious as to how so many on this site are aware of 'Silk Road'

I think I now know why people on here seem like they are out of their mind at times.

Why wouldn't he set up shop outside the US? Like...Venezuela.

When I first read about this in Forbes I just assumed he was set up in a country outside the US..... Book smarts but no common sense. In his mind he would never get caught

What are the chances he gets immunity to become an informer then ends up working for the government?
