I think that B on his paper stands for BALL. I think its a hint that he's getting all the runs this week. Mark it down.

Word on the street is that Greg would start the rest of season and get at least 45 touches a game if he got an A-

Yeah, that's touching and all. But the next twitter exchange right after that had be literally laughing out loud.

Sounds like Greg is doing just fine at ND!
Awesome to see Coach Alford comment back on his classroom work.

Aside from the general worrywart nature of our fan base, is there actually any reason to think Bryant is fixing to bounce?
If not, can we perhaps move on?

Dudes watching him at the urinal?

Seriously, he seems content. From a pure talent and potential standpoint, he shouldn't be 5th string at any team in the country. We all want the new 5 star to be "the man", and I thought Gb would be by mid-season. We don't have to worry about Cam or Atkinson transferring. I'm disappointed he is so far down. I won't lie.

So did I. But if he's struggling to learn the blocking assignments, I don't want him playing either. Give him a little time and he should be fine. If that's a redshirt year, and he's cool with it, even better.

He's not far from where Julius Jones was at this time as a freshman.

Bettis had 15 carries as a freshman, Mark Green 5, Becton 15, Carter 29, Brooks 54, Watters 69. Ferguson had 81 carries as a frosh and 80 as a soph.

All these guys were in smash mouth running attacks when ND ran the ball 50 or 60 times a game, every game.

I get what you are saying, but the game has changed. Almost all of those guys were 20 years ago or more.

The game has changed in that five-stars have more expectation of immediate playing time?
I guess. But the guy's a running back, not a quarterback. There's playing time to go around. And he'd have to sit a year regardless, and there's competition at any big-time program. So he's got to ask himself, am I better off at ND right now/next year where I could be The Man at any moment, or scrapping for carries somewhere else in 2015? Then he can look at, say, Aaron Lynch and Gunner Kiel, who left. And Tommy Rees and Louis Nix, who stuck around, and decide who made the better choice.
If he's unhappy for some other reason, that's one thing. But if it's just about playing time, honestly this seems like a lot of fuss that'll amount to probably nothing.

All True, but how is the #2 RB in the nation only 5th string? He was a top 25 player overall by most recruiting services. Recruiting rankings only mean so much, and no disrespect to our other RBs, but has to be something.

Yes they were. But among those changes are ND not running the ball 50 times a game and the assignments are much more complex. The chances are less and the knowlege basis infinitely tougher for guys still learning their way around campus and awash in ND academics.

Under Holtz, the QB was really the only one that had to make reads. If the inside of the line was open, he handed off to the FB. IF the inside was covered, the QB then made the read to keep or pitch. The RB only had to know how to go from a 3 point stance to either his left or his right AROUND the end, and how to catch a pitch.

If the defense brought up the safeties, the QB audibled and hit a streaking or crossing WR. There were no progressions. The QB and WR didn't readthe defense to cut in or out. NO coordinating with 4 other receivers. If the WR was covered, the QB pulled it down and took off. Holtz rarely threw to this TEs, they were merely his 6th and 7th OLs.

RBs didn't have to pass block much less read the blitz and pick it up. ND is slow to get plays off. Rees reads and audiblizes. THEN he turns and explains for 5 or 8 seconds to the new RBs what they are supposed to do. How much element of surprise when he points and says, "No over there!"

Wanna go more recent than 20 years, you list the backs that got 15 -20 carries as a freshman. I can think of a lot of guys that were severly limited because they couldn't read the blitz or if they did, couldn't execute. Right now for all the lamentations, ND has one viable QB. Like it or not they can't afford to lose him. So being able to handle the blitz is essential.

Also keep in mind at most other schools they open with creampuffs for the first few weeks so new people can be worked in in blowouts. ND opens with tougher opponents an having been blowing out people. ND also has a new receiving corps at WR and TE that need work. Davaris runs a great route on one play and wanders about on another. The way TJ used to do. Niklas is still learning to play TE and needs reps. All this cuts down the opportunities. Should ND stop playing Robinson to give the reps to the 5th team RB? Robby's catching the ball now.

Besides what happened to Bryant's father's tweets about a medical redshirt? Why are we discussing lack of PT if the player is "available" ala Zaire and his mono?

More Recent RBs

More Recent RBs

Tony Fisher
Ryan Grant
Julius Jones
Powers-Neal
Darius Walker
Armando Allen
Cierre Wood
Robert Hughes
Riddick
Jonas Gray
GA III
Cam McDaniel

I don't remember any of these guys starting out of the gate getting major work as a freshman. Julius Jones got his first start in Game 6 if I recall correctly. Didn't Wood redshirt as a frosh?

Walker and Allen I think got significant action as freshman as the season progressed. Fans were aggravated as I recall because they got more PT than bigger or faster guys but they were the more complete package, runner, pass catcher, pass protection.

Some freshman numbers I found:
Fisher 8
Grant 29 carries
Powers-Neal DNP
GA III 9
Carlisle 19 (@ USC)
McDaniels 3

Armando Allen got like a hundred touches as a true freshman, but that was in 2007 when every freshman was playing. That same year Hughes probably had 50 touches.

I think the bigger issue for Bryant is that the depth doesn't decrease for 2014. If Golson is back and Kelly finally wants to have a Cincinnati-esque offense, Carlisle will probably get moved to slot 90% of the time. But Atkinson, Folston, and McDaniel are still there. There is more than half the season left to go yet, who knows what happens. Some could step up, someone could get hurt. We don't know.

Just my opinion but if all these players are running wrong routes, not learning blocking assignments, etc. THAT is on the coach for not getting the players ready. Niklas, Daniels, Koyack, Welch, Etc. have been here long enough to know what the plays are and how to run them...if not, the coach did not teach well enough or the system needs to be easier to learn. As for GB getting in...why not put him in with the predictive running package(you know, onwalu, D. Smith, pistol formation). When these guys are in among others, Rees may audible to another run play or to run a different direction. If he does audible to a pass play, it is a 3 step drop and the back has to hit an open defender, rarely having to hold a block. If the defense was blitzing, ress would shift the line and could easily point out the defender for GB to block(not the first time it has happened). The defense is not going to shift out of the blitz and if they do, GB still doesn't have to block so its a win win. Blocking assignments is not the reason he has not played...I would just like to know why?
