Starting to agree with the title of this thread. Running empty sets on third and short and then chucking it 15+ yards downfield just isn't playing to our strengths. Happened over and over again today. I don't get it.

Martin doesn't throw the passes.

I don't disagree but we also failed at running the ball on 3rd and short. We were just all around bad on what should have been favorable 3rd down situations and running game was terrible today. Not sure if the problems with the running game were a result of poor play from the backs, oline, play calling, or combination of the three.

So he should only run slant routes? gtfo

The occasional slant wouldn't be the end of the world. Or an out. Or a six-yard hook to our enormous tight end. Even a play-action would be better. Or even run it!
Downfield routes to outside receivers just aren't high percentage throws, no matter who your quarterback is.

Please tell me you watch these games, because your comment says otherwise. Maybe you should re-watch it. During these "5 wide" sets, do you think everyone is running a go/post/corner route? You really don't think that there are any outs or ins?

All you focused on were the poor throws that tommy made that happened to be downfield.

Why does everyone keep talking about his poor throws/over throws. He's got a cannon. We have speedy WRs. Its not his fault they cant get to where the ball is.

Not saying its all the problem but when your Qb is only completing 57 % of his passes.

Yes, I'm sure there are shorter routes. I'm suppose they're well covered. But today so were the downfield routes. Yet he threw a bunch of them. So next you'll tell me that Rees is locked in on Daniels. Maybe he is. But again at some level this comes back to coaching. He's not a freshman anymore and Daniels ain't Floyd. So why is he still locked in? And why is he chucking low-percentage throws 20 yards down the sideline when we only need three?

It's easy to **** on Tommy. He's not a great quarterback. No one would argue he is. But one of our great quarterbacks pussied out and the other ****ed up. So he's the best we've got right now. The coaches need to put him in position to do what he does well, and get him to stop doing what he doesn't. That's the coaches' job.

Also, so many times on 3rd and short (and once on 4th and short) we did a rollout with Rees with only 2 WRs and everyone else in pass protection. Figured you would give Rees more than 2 option on 3rd down, but that's just me.

There is no hope in you.

And yes, it is very easy to **** on tommy

I still can't believe how vanilla the playcalling has become. I can tell whether a pass or run is coming and I know very little about football schemes and formations. I don't see the rationale of lining up in the shotgun, empty backfield, on 3rd-and-one. With Tommy, who can't run at all, back there, there is literally zero threat of a run and our offense becomes one-dimensional in a situation where the threat of a run should be the most present.

Also, the amount of 15+ yard (incomplete) passes thrown on 3rd-and-short was infuriating.

Not even a small part? Come on.

This comment and your avatar are made for each other.

I was kinda being sarcastic. Yesterday he deserved some on the over throws. But thats about it. The plays on the sidelines the receivers should have given him more room for that throw. He's been solid this year until this last game, and we've looked like **** all year. Blaming him is denial on what the real problems are. In fact w/o him we would be 1-3

Never thought I'd see that used to describe Rees.

I was kidding in reference to everyone commenting on his over throws.

Defending Rees or the play calling yesterday is ridiculous. They are a match made in heaven (or D2).

Blaming Rees for how shity the offense has looked this year is ridiculous. We don't have a QB on the roster better. He's better than Golson was last year. He's completing 61% of his passes even after yesterdays shity performance. He's throw for almost 1000 yds and 7 TDs and only 2 INTs. Before the season if anyone woulda told people that those would be his stats thru 4 games not a single rational person woulda been unhappy. Rees isn't to blame. He has given this team probably more than was expected of him by most. Now the play calling, the D, the ST, the RBs......................haven't.

I would love to sit in on their coaches meetings to hear just exactly what the goals were offensively. I can't wait for this week's preparation for handoff up the middle for no gain on the first play. Maybe they will perfect the third and one empty backfield play as well.

Luckily we don't play many teams worth a **** or this would be a long year. We need to throw the ball downfield to get the run game going the bottom line is our receivers have to make plays. If we have to rely on Tommy's arm to win games then every game we play a legit team we will lose. Temple, Purdue, Michigan State are all teams that will end up 500 maybe a game or 2 better. Yes there names sound good but good teams they are not & Michigan isn't much better, the only good win they have is against us & @ this point it's not saying much. We should have punished damn near every team we played & yet were hanging on for dear life. People act like we're in a rebuilding year & we defiantly are not we lost 3 people on defense & yes they were key pieces but no way we should take a step back from last year.

Right before the game, my friend and I were talking about how crappy the play calling has been, specifically the handoffs up the middle for no gain and the bubble screen. Guess what the first two plays were haha

Link didn't work. My appologies, my stats were prior to yesterdays game. My point and belief still remain. He has more TDs and YDs than I stated and is down 5% in the completion percentage. Which was from one iffy game against our toughest D to this point. Rees isn't main issue, hell he's not in the top 5 probably.

Quote these stats are nothing special against teams that shouldn't have been within 3 TDs of ND & the 2 pics came against the only ranked team we've played so far & Michigan is nothing special.

I thought is was a bad dream. I couldn't believe they actually ran those plays. I was really hoping to see more Niklas stretching the seam yesterday, oh well, hopefully this week.
