Breaking Bad: Bones I have broken in my life –
As a kid (8?) I broke a wrist playing football with Fred Flintstone. I recall that I spent six weeks in a cast up to my armpit. It got pretty damn itchy and stinky, but I reigned supreme in King-of-the-Hill competition.
My freshman year at ND I broke my right thumb "sledding" the hill behind Holy Cross Hall to St. Mary's Lake. The good folk at the Infirmary sent me to St. Joseph's Hospital for X-Rays. I stuck out my broken thumb to hitch hike to and from St. Joe's. They told me that they'd send the pics to the Infirmary and that I'd be contacted. Three days passed. The swelling went down. I started bending the thumb thinking it wasn't all that bad. I called the Infirmary after three days to find out what was what. They responded "We got the X-rays two days ago; just keep the splint on for three weeks." My response? "What splint?" Their response? "Stop in when you get a chance. The worst thing you could do is to flex the thumb since you could end up with a frozen thumb." So much for my handball rotation in PE.
Later in life, after taking up volleyball I blew out both my left and right ankle/foot twice. The first involved six weeks in a cast. The last two weeks in a padded Ace (failed) followed by two weeks in an inflatable cast (failed) followed by four weeks in a plaster cast.
My point? If your injury involves broken bones with no damage to tendons and muscles, you'll have four to six weeks of discomfort and inconvenience and then all will be well.
Hang tough, don't push it and carry on.
