Does this feel like 2006 maybe to anyone? Sure we might go back to the BCS but the team really isn't that good to be there and if we go there we will have no shot against an SEC team. I honestly don't see us beating the good teams on our schedule this year.

Edit: 2006 or 2011 I just get that vibe after tonight

I read a post tonight in one of the thread (but can't find it now) that our defense will be better as we faced the last DT QB on our schedule tonight. Well you might (then again might not) want to check out the BYU v Texas boxscore.

BYU won 40 to 21 despite Texas being +2 on Turnovers.

TX had 445 yds of Total Offense on 83 plays against one of the better defenses in the country.

But BYU had 679 yds of Total O on 99 plays!

"QB U" ran the ball 72 times for 550 yds.

The "QB U" QB, Taysom Hill RAN the ball 17 times for 259 yds. Hill scored on runs of 60, 20, and 28 yds.

BYU's Jamaal Williams added 182 yds on 30 carries .

Last week BYU lost to UVA 19-16. During the week they made some adjustments to their OLine and commiteed to the OPTION READ and set a new BYU team rushing record as well as setting the ALL-Time Opponent Rushing Record against TX.
BYU's Paul Laiske only had 87 yds but he only had 15 carries.

Hill was also 9 of 26 for 129 yds and 1 TD.

Contain. Is it really that hard of a concept?

Thank you Piombino!

Elijah in the first quarter didn't do his job and others followed suit on multiple occasions the rest of the night. Maybe the moment got to them I don't know. You can feel the direct impact of Spond being gone. This staff will evaluate what took place and be tougher and tougher as each game goes on. I was disappointed with not seeing Shembo/Tuitt collapsing the pocket all game but whatever. Maybe Tuitt will be back next year if he keeps this up. :) If they don't improve as a defensive unit each game then start calling for Diaco's head. Jesus people.

^This.
Anyone who expected ND to run through their schedule undefeated, this season, was simply fooling themselves. We were going to lose at least 1 or 2 games, based on personnel that we lost from last year. No loss is ever fun, but how about we wait and see how the team responds to it before predicting another 2007 type record?

I'm honestly wondering, this morning, how many of you who are so pi$$ed off about this loss, are pi$$ed off because you have been incessantly running your mouth all week, and now you are going to have to eat some serious crow, with your friends? Rather than fire Brian Kelly, how about you just smarten up and quit flapping your gums so much?

Nothing to see here; move along, please.

I respect and enjoy your post game observations and thread. But after losses like last night, usually less than half of whats posted makes sense, and even less is reasonable.

If you can overlook the "Chicken Little, the sky is falling" mentality, which hasn't crept in as much as I thought it might, then it's not bad.

It's just particularly painful to be outplayed by Michigan. They are a recruiting rival one less year into their rebuilding phase - which started from lower down (Rich Rod left their program more bereft of talent than Weis did) and at this moment in time their future looks brighter.

The last paragraph is root canal work for more than a few posters here!

I live in Michigan, and am surrounded by U of M fans. Hell, most of my friends are. But I know to never talk ****. Not even last year. But this game is the most meaningful on the schedule for me. Not because I can gloat if we win, but because it shuts their mouths if we do.

It's a loss. It won't affect recruiting at all, if we go 11-1 and win a BCS bowl(to finish 12-1). How does their future look so much brighter? They let a mediocre QB throw for 300+ on them. They let us run up the middle extremely well. I don't like the Buckeyes, and think that they are way overrated (by their fans); but Braxton Miller(with a healthy knee) and Company will put up 700+ yards on Michigan's D, if they don't play better than they did last night.

Things that could be worse than last night: (please feel free to add to the list)

You could be a Jets fan.

Ray Lewis on ESPN.

A day with Mark May.

I will say that a little bit ago my soon to be 3 year old was having a mini melt down for reasons unknown. My GF is a Michigan fan, so that means he will probably be one too (I'm trying my hardest to keep him from that, he is already an ND fan.) I simply looked down and said it could be much worse, your team won last night. He obviously didn't understand. But my GF simply looked at me and laughed.

A 9-3 or 8-4 record is a reasonable expectation from this team after seeing 2 weeks of underwhelming play from the defense. We still have 3 or 4 teams on the schedule that could give us fits.

I believe in Kelly and this group of guys. I wouldn't be shocked if they won out either, but the defense needs to get much, much better. We can't rely on Tommy to get that offense to score 40 points per game.

Amir needs to see 2/3 of the touches out of the backfield at this point. The receiving core is very talented. Tommy needs to work extensively with Robinson to get a fade route/back shoulder money play for the red zone.

The frustrating part is we have all the pieces except a mobile QB and true leader in the middle of the defense. I think the team is arguably better everywhere else except the gaping holes left by Manti and Golson (and Eifert, but TE doesn't effect the game that much).

1. We don't have DB's that can cover man to man....bottom line

2. Tommy gives us everything he can, but it will just never be enough to win big games when the defense doesn't play well

3. TJ Jones is a warrior...toughest guy on our roster

4. MLB's look slower and more un-athletic every week.

5. Taylor Lewan is a stud...absolutely swallowed Shembo for 99% of game

6. Our O line is very good and Hiestand is probably the best position coach on our staff

7. Anyone who thought Kelly would not be calling plays this year is on drugs

8. MOST IMPORTANTLY....not having Everett golson on our team last night cost us that game, no doubt in my mind about it.

It's kind of encouraging that one loss does this to all of us. Kelly and co. Have raised our expectations so much that 10-2 is a dissapointment.

he would have extended drives and no way ann arbor is able to rush 3 or 4 and drop everyone else we would have scored 50 points last night with Everett...come on use your head you know that.

defense would have been put in better field position situations and been much more fresh early on

Golson was 3/8 for 30 yards, and 2 INTs, last year vs. Michigan. He also had 1 rush for 0 yards.

But he would have made ALL of the difference, last night?

Really? Golson got pulled last year against Michigan, he had a bad interception deep in our territory. Sure hed probably be a little better this year but he also cant make some of the pre snap decisions rees can. That didnt cost us the game

I agree it would have been a different game had we had a mobile QB. But Rees is mentally farther along than Golson was, so I'm not sure the offense woulda been great lengths ahead of what we saw. And there is no way our D was stopping Gardner. We struggled with a mobile Temple QB. Play action is killing us, and we can't contain. I just don't think Golson alone would have changed the W/L outcome of that game.
