As part of Sandusky's separation contract with Penn State, he was granted access to the campus like any other Faculty Emeritus. Paterno may have had immense power and influence at Penn State, but he didn't have unchecked power. For example, he didn't have the power to void that clause in Sandusky's contract. If the suggestion is that Paterno twisted the arms campus leadership to extend some special priveledge to Sandusky, I'd have to see some evidence of that. I, like you and almost everyone else, find it appauling that Sandusky was given access to the university following his "retirement" from the coaching staff, but I don't think that that can be pinned on Paterno.

Give me a break. The conversation would go like this:

JoPa - "Jerry, you can't come to the campus until the authorities check out this story"

Jerry - "That's not fair, Joe. I need to bring kids here to mole... I mean help them"

JoPa - "Sorry Jerry, you can choose to still come to campus, but if you do. These allegations will become public and we will ask the courts to make a judgement on your contract."

Jerry - "Ok, Joe. Lets see how this plays out"

From the "evidence" part of your statement above, I would tell you the same thing I told the other guy earlier. Read the report before you start spouting off inuendos that you don't know the facts on. There is verifiable evidence that JoPa spoke with Curley on how to handle the situation after he reported it. JoPa also NEVER tried to follow up on this. Ask yourself... would you simply not follow up on an act of child molestation you reported.

The delusion of some of you is unreal. Go read the report.

Take it easy there with the "delusion" garbage. I just don't think he had the ultimate power that you seem to think he had. Sure he had a lot of sway on campus, but he wasn't God. I've already said that I agree that he should have done more and I'm not excusing him for not doing more, but it was not his decision to allow or not allow Sandusky to come to campus. It just wasn't. That decision was made up the food chain and was a matter of university policy (no matter how insane the policy was).

It was his decision to let him on campus. If you read the report, you will see what i'm talking about. He had conversations with Curly about how to handle the situation. Furthermore, you are being silly if you really believe that if JoPa didn't want someone on the campus, that they wouldn't be on the campus.

It was not university policy that he be allowed on campus. I have no idea what you are trying to get at with that.

JoPa had as much to do with this cover up as anyone involved, if not more. Those labelled as his superiors held less power than he did. Everyone knew that. This all could have been stopped by so many, but they all dropped the ball. Starting with McQueary. He was the witness and let it die with JoPa. He is the only one who went to the highest power inside the program (JoPa) to report it, but still shoulda done more when he realized that it was still going on. As far as I'm concerned, in regards to the cover up, JoPa is the most responsible of the entire group.

So does this mean if Joe Pa was still alive he would have been charged as well? I thought he did everything he was required to do with in the law. If that's the case why isn't just one person being charged?

The VP was not the “ head of security." He had no arrest powers. Was there a call to campus police and a report filed? No. It was a cover-up plain and simple and Joe was part of it.

The VP was absolutely the head of the campus police department. This is well documented.

Penn State’s lesser-known fallen icons: Spanier, Curley and Schultz - Campus Overload - The Washington Post

Gary C. Schultz: ”An incredible mentor.” As Spanier was building up Penn State’s academic reputation, Schultz was building up its facilities. In his 14 years as the vice president for finance and business, buildings rose and the university budget doubled. Schultz oversaw several departments, including police, human resources and legal services, and was considered a fair and even-tempered boss.

I think you two are arguing slightly different points. Yes he "oversaw the police department along with many other departments" but he was not a sworn officer. In city terms it is more like he was the Mayor (technically over the police department but not an officer) vs talking with the Police Commissioner or Chief or the Sheriff (county) who has arrest power and is usually a sworn police officer.

Mea Culpa. But it DOES make him head of the security(police) department.

I'm sure he didn't have anything to do with the day-to-day operations of the police dept. He would probably be involved if there was a complaint against the dept. He had no arrest powers. I hope he testifies in his trial. It will probably all be explained.

Joe Pa didn't have arrest powers, and he wasn't involved in the day-to-day operations of the police department, so it's understandable that he didn't follow up on a child molestation complaint.

its ok guys.... The campus police will handle this serial child molester case...

Look, I understand that stoners everywhere have been perpetually angry, ever since Hostess went bankrupt. But taking that anger out on Joe Paterno is kind of uncalled for.

NO he didn't, but he knew it was more than a simple complaint. And so did everyone else, or they wouldn't be in this position. They all aided in the molestation of several children as far as I'm concerned.

I was talking about the VP who also somehow the "head of the police department."

I know who you were talking about. And Schultz was the head of the police department. I don't care if he was a sworn LEO or not............. Paterno reported the allegations to him. Could Paterno have done more? Absolutely. But this notion that Joe Pa did NOTHING is just not true.

He did the bare minimum and allowed that creep to hang around his football team for 10 years. He never bothered to ask what the outcome was? he saw all of these people regularly and it never came up? Paterno cared more about his image and the image of his program than children who were raped on campus and over the next ten years.

Mike McQueary, former Penn State assistant, said he was sexual abuse victim, sources say - ESPN

By Don Van Natta Jr. | ESPN.com 3/4/14

A former assistant football coach and key prosecution witness in the upcoming conspiracy trial of three former Penn State leaders accused of covering up Jerry Sandusky's sexual abuse crimes told his players during a November 2011 closed-door meeting that he, too, was sexually abused as a boy, sources told ESPN The Magazine.

Mike McQueary confided to a dozen Nittany Lions players that he could relate to the helplessness of the young boy he had seen with Sandusky in a campus shower a decade earlier because he was abused as a boy, according to two players who attended the meeting and four others with knowledge of it. McQueary did not tell the players who had abused him or when or how long the abuse had occurred, the sources said.

Wonder what the JoePa cultists will say now. They were pretty hard on McQueary before, some actually believe he made the whole thing up along with the victims to bring Joe down. Sounds like McQueary really was a big fan of Joe

I was hard on McQueary and still am.

IF he was abused as a youth, all the more reason to step forward and intervene as a MAN.

This isn't about Paterno. It's about a man doing the right thing at the right time. Not later that night, not the next day, nor the next year.

I can rationalize with this alleged revelation that he might have avoided open confrontation to spare embarrassment for the boy BUT it was statutory rape.

McQueary could have confronted Sandusky. He could have hollered, "Anybody here?", getting Sandusky's undivided attention. He could have slammed some lockers. Pulled the fire alarm. Called Campus Police. Beat Sandusky senseless.

He did nothing and let the rapist continue.

McQueary is definitely next in line for responsibility after Sandusky. Why believe what he says? Maybe I am wrong about Paterno, but McQueary is a weak, pathetic soul that deserves no trust or sympathy from anyone.

YES!
