Hadn't heard that story. it certainly was a "different day" in the NFL when he played. He was one of my first heroes...along with Buck Buchanan and Alan Page. RIP David!

May he RIP. The man was an all time great who played the game hard as his body would let him. He was awesome.

... Heard he once faked a broken arm so he could play with a steel rod in his cast. Wouldn't get away with that sort of thing today ...

He'd never make it past the scanners at the airport. Though I 'spose he could have thumbed a ride on Madden's bus.

Anyone know where he got the nickname Deacon?

This is the guy who coined the word "sack".

I heard this guy was a talented and dirty player. Heard he once faked a broken arm so he could play with a steel rod in his cast. Wouldn't get away with that sort of thing today obviously.

I saw him play. Master of the Head Slap. Tough and mean but I never heard of him playing with a steel rod. Do you have a cite for this?

As for the Fearsome Foursome, the originals were the NY Giants of the late 50's, Grier, Modzelewski, Katcavage, and Robustelli. When Grier went to the Rams the name followed. The local media picked up the nickname and applied it to Grier, Deacon Jones, Olson, and Lundy. The Detroit Lions (Karras) and SD Chargers DLines also called Fearsome Foursome.
