Switching the channel and watching a team not play the slow-paced, energyless basketball of Notre Dame is such a relief.

We gave them a decent scrimmage, they got a good sweat before they start the tourney.

if we are slow and what not, why not at least get guys that can shoot the 3. And start playing a bombing type offense. Right now, all this gets us is one and done.

What are Duke, Miami, NC, and the rest of the ACC going to do to us?? It isn't the slow down and pound league. WE are going to get run!

Flameout of a season. A major league choke job. Iowa State is a very good team, but we didn't show up. No heart. No passion. No effort

If I'm mike brey, RIGHT NOW I'm recruiting hungry, athletic big men and i could give two sh*ts less if they are undersized...and I'm finding guards that can create off the dribble...THAT and I'm changing the god awful offense that puts no pressure on the defense...When you don't have a creator on offense, you can't run an offense that has minimal to no movement in it...If Brey doesn't make a sweet 16 run in the next three years (being nice) then he needs to kick rocks...It doesn't make sense that teams like SDSU, VCU, and Butler have more sweet 16+ appearances than we do in the last 10yrs

They should have never signed him to a new contract to start off with.

Give me a team of undersized, hungry, pressure-putting players who have heart any day of the week...the fact that we have the budget that we do and to not put a team on the court that looks like they belong in the tournament year in and out is ridiculous!!! Time to start changing our identity and start recruiting athletes...even not on the national scene...

I'm on board with this.

You clearly didn't watch the Big East tournament when they played great.

I don't know what you people expected. Iowa State was a HORRIBLE match up for this team and it was stated from the beginning. I expected a double digit loss.

Agreed... So much.

Terrible match up, never had a chance. I had a bet that they'd lose by double digits. Boy did I win...

I''ve said before, probably in this thread, next year is the year. I'm fine with this loss. BUT, lord, losing by that margin is despicable.

Things I want to see next season.

1) (i'll start at the most controversial) our new center/pf position without Jack. I've grown so tired of Jack this year. His hustle/passion is admirable, but that's just not gonna cut it. He's a joke on defense.
I expect Tom and Garrick to improve by being less awkward with the ball... too many TOs.
Zach, I expect a huge improvement with a full offseason under his belt.

2) The slashers. Jerian freaking Grant. I love this man, I love his game... HE HAS to improve his touch. He makes awesome cuts, he gets to the bucket. JUST please. Finish your drives. His layup is so strong, kiss it off the glass.
Cameron... Bulk up, get rid of the nerves. He's gonna improve. Not too worried (yes i know he was garbage. But i expected this)

I'll go in depth more tomorrow.

Brey is a great coach... Some teams we can run with, some we can't. Brey is bringing in the right guys.

Let this blow off light a fire. They'll get this back...

FYI, i have ISU beating OSU.. LETS GO!

FYI.

I'm tired of hearing people (not accusing you guys, per se) talk about ND basketball...

90% of these people don't watch more than the Big East / NCAA tourny games...

I follow ND Basketball first, football comes second.

I'd take a NCAA basketball win over football any day.

So, if you happen to one of these people, please, back the **** off Brey. And, come back when you know what the heck you're talking about.

My two cents...

I too am a bigger fan of ND basketball than football (although its getting close). I watch all the games that are on tv and went to nearly every game while I was a student. Mike Brey is a tremendous regular season coach and developer of talent .

That being said we will never overachieve in the NCAA tournament and will underachieve more often than we play up to our seed if he remains our coach. Tonight was a tough matchup on paper but how do you not call a timeout until late in the first half after turning it over so many times. I don't care how close the score is. The "coaches don't miss shots or turn the ball over" argument means nothing to me. I'm not okay with making the tournament every year and that's it. Brey gets one more year to make the Sweet Sixteen or he should be fired.

I don't watch NCAA basketball a ton, but I don't get when people say 'he's a great regular season coach, just not a tournament coach'. In Men's basketball, you play every couple days, much like the tournament, so the scheduling/managing is very similar, no? It's not like the NFL where you can sandbag it at the end if you're in a good position; you're fighting for seeding through the regular season, conference tourney, and then there's the tournament of 64. What makes one a good regular season coach and not a tournament coach?

Good question. I'll try and answer it although its **less complicated than I'll make it out to be.

First of all 65-75% of regular season games are at home. Brey has definitely mastered the art of getting his players to amp up their intensity for weak opponents and calmed them down when they are overexcited for top tier opponents.

Second, we have played in the Big East against the same opponents and the same coaches for 15+ years. A good regular season coach learns from his experiences against the same teams and has figured out what works and what doesn't. He recruits players that will be successful against the Big East. He also understands how referees will call the game and molds his team's playing style to maximize success in the conference.

Third, you generally have a lot more time to prepare for opponents. And within the conference you don't need to prepare as much because of familiarity with other coaches.

On the flip side, a good tournament coach is able to prepare his team against an unfamiliar opponent in a couple of days. He can develop a flexible game plan and hold efficient practices.

One of the most important traits of a good tournament coach is to make adjustments after the first ten minutes of the game depending on how refs are calling it. In the regular season you can get away with halftime adjustments and chirping at the refs but in the NCAA the refs aren't familiar with the coaches and won't let them get in their ear. So it's up to the coaches to adjust on the fly.

Furthermore, a good tournament coach keeps his team focused on the current opponent. Looking ahead is the kiss of death. You can get away with some of that in the regular season. Also, they recruit players that can match up with different styles. Overall, it's about game planning and adjusting quickly. There's a lot more to it but I hope that helps.

I don't think it's that complicated.

When this team had a bad match up, they got blown out all season long: Georgetown, Syracuse, Providence, Louisville, and now Iowa State. They just aren't good enough to play certain types of teams. I don't even know basketball too well (at least compared to football), but any guy with half a brain can tell you that they'll struggle against a good 2-3 zone, and an offense that spreads the floor well. Iowa State is the latter and it was obvious it wasn't going to go well.

I picked Iowa State in all three of my brackets, I was that convinced.

If they would have been any of the other seven seeds, they'd have been fine. If they switched spots with San Diego State....oh man!

Lastly, remember how talented this team is and consider how much more talented and athletic the guys coming in are.
