Who will be ND's last commitment? Will we even get a 28th commitment?

Who is even in the running anymore?

Kates? Well... rumor has it that he no longer has a scholarship offer, as everyone knows by now... however, his ranking on Rivals did decrease from 17th best tackle to 20th, which might mean Rivals knows something that we don't.

When is ND sending all of those coaches to Oklahoma for an in-home visit with McCoy, anyway? And is Weis going to be among them (I'm assuming yes)?

We've been discussing this all day in the Kates thread. You probably should take a gander.

At this point, who else is a viable option?
The answer is ....... Jimmy Clausen.

Jimmy will choose ND, enroll early, and C-Dub will use that as the 28th slot in this class. Beautiful contingency plan.

Is there an article that mentions Clausen wanting to enroll early? Do you think he can throw 6-7 TDs a game since that's what we'll be giving up when we lose most of our defensive line?

I'm talking in the next couple of weeks.

Who is this Jarred Shaw fellow from scout.com?

Shows interest with ND, but no offer. Only offers are UCLA or Tennessee. I know nothing about him.

In other words, I don't think they are going to get anyone else. I don't see C-Dub chasing someone he hasnt been working. If it is not McCoy or Kates, it is move on with the awesome 27 they have.

I don't settle. I also believe Weis is cut from the same fabric. If there is still a stone out there with an uncommitted DT prospect, I have to believe our guys are poking, proding and inquiring.

It would be STUPID not to. I guess we'll see in just a little under two weeks, though.

Funny how when a guy like Urban Meyer pokes and prods at the 12 hour of a recruit he has not been putting cycles into he is called a sleaze bag etc. But for ND it is called 'not settling'.

Sorry for the confusion, I wasn't clear. No doubt, poking and proding for already committed recruits is sleazy. I'm talking about players that are uncommitted and there are a TON of DT prospects still uncommitted.

Urban Meyer didn't know who Raeshon McNeil was two weeks ago.

And he's a d*ckwad anyway. But I'm over it. Brady Quinn running the spread option?

Kill me.

Take a look at this:

Jarrod Shaw(***) of Louisiana has a 3.94 GPA and 22 ACT.
6-4 344, benches 340 and squats 435. 22 inch vertical.
Only has offers from UCLA and Tennessee. Only visit was to Tennessee on 1/13.

What's wrong with this guy?

If contacting a recruit that has already committed to another school is "sleazy" then the entire recruiting process is "sleazy"! And perhaps it is!

Several days ago someone posted and interview with DJ where he admitted that he continues to be contacted by various schools even though he steadfastly says "ND". I am not saying ND does or doesn't do it but ND invited McClendon to the school AFTER HE HAD COMMITTED TO TENN. This is normal practice in the recruiting business and will continue to be.

Jiggs said it several days ago--the letter of intent is all that matters. Until that is signed these recruits will continue to be hounded. Do we think that Young will not get phone calls just because he has declared for ND? Did DJ continue to get them? You better believe it.

Jason Kates of Harrisburg (Penn.) Bishop McDevitt is one of the top rated defensive tackles in the country and is exactly the type of player the Gophers need. He is space eater at 324 pounds and can take on two blockers freeing up space for a teammate to knife through and make a play. Kates also has the speed and moves to get into the backfield and put a hit on the quarterback or make a tackle behind the line. His ability and size have caught the attention of Gopher coaches, but unfortunately they are not the only ones. Kates took his official visit to Minnesota in late October.

GopherIllustrated.com's take: Kates is the type of person who keeps his feelings close to the vest and has not tipped his cards about his favorites so far in the process. He has taken three visits so far, Minnesota, Syracuse, and Maryland, and is scheduled to visit Michigan this weekend. He has not said much about what he is looking for in a school, but Minnesota does appear to have an uphill battle to land Kates. At Maryland he would join to high school teammates who have already committed and would possibly be the only tackle in this class. At Michigan he would have more competition for playing time, but would be playing for one of the most storied teams in college football and have a chance at a National Championship every year. Unless Kates is looking for the easiest route to almost guaranteed immediate playing time, the Gophers will likely be on the outside looking in.

If that is so then the staff needs to get to work. Recognize that other coaches have been spending alot of time with most of these recruits so to be a newcomer - even with the draw of ND and C-Dub - has to make these a long shot at best. But alls we need is one :)

Maybe he has disciplinary problems. But then, FSU would probably be recruiting him. Something has to up with this guy if he has those types of numbers.

I think Kates' offer was revoked for a reason. There's a chance it was because of grade issues, test issues, or something he did from a behavioral standpoint.

I just watched some of his videos again and even though my impression is that he is a fat slob, he is pretty quick for his size. He does seem to be the best DT available, so I find it hard to believe that Weis would stop recruiting him if there wasn't a reason for doing so.

So I've sort of moved on to the post-Kates world and no longer consider him to be much of an option. So what we're left with is beyond me.

But the real loser at the end of the day if we only take 27 commitments is George West. This guy missed his senior year of high school to ensure that we could get a 28th member of the class.

I don't doubt that ND is a great place to be, but that last year of high school is meant to be special, and only happens once.

It looks like ND is done for 2006. I still think they're going to try and nab one other person before it's over.

Kates apparently has named his top two. Anyone have a Rivals or Scout sub that can post that info?

Two On Top For Four Star Kates
Josh Helmholdt

Harrisburg (Pa.) Bishop McDevitt defensive tackle Jason Kates had not listed Michigan since the summer before putting them back on his list and taking an official visit this past weekend. The 6-3, 330-pound prospect had taken three previous official visits before this weekend's trip to Michigan and talked about how the Wolverines' stacked up to his other favorites.

"It went well. It was the best one probably so far," Kates said of his Michigan visit. "I think they are tied for No. 1 right now with Maryland."

Kates had previously taken official visits to Minnesota (Oct. 28), Syracuse (Dec. 9), and Maryland (Jan. 13) and said all three of those teams along with schools like NC State and Notre Dame are also in the running for his services. He plans to make a decision on Signing Day and has a few coaches expected in home this week.

"NC State is coming in tomorrow and [Michigan] Coach [Lloyd] Carr is coming in Friday," Kates reported. "I am going to sit down and think about it this whole weekend when everybody comes in."

The Michigan visit was the last official visit Kates had planned. He set it up late after Michigan dropped off their interest following the departure of former defensive line coach Bill Sheridan last winter. New line coach Steve Stripling got back in contact with Kates after his senior season and reinvigorated the four-star's interest in the Wolverines.

Kates had listed Michigan early in the process and said he wanted to take an official visit to Ann Arbor ever since his junior year. The trip lived up to it's billing.

"I just liked everybody and I liked the academic side," said Kates. "I liked the new academic center and I think they have a great business school. It is one of the top three business schools in the country and I was impressed about that. It's just an overall good school.

"It seems like they need defensive tackles. I would probably play defensive tackle and nose guard and I may have an opportunity to get in my freshman year."

Kates was in Ann Arbor for over the course of three days and had two different hosts on his two nights, both of whom kept the excitement level up.

"One night it was Michael Hart and the other night it was Johnny Thompson," remarked Kates. "They might be a little too wild for me. Alan Branch – I liked him a lot, especially since he plays defensive tackle. He's not a skinny defensive back."

Rivals.com ranks Kates as the No. 20 defensive tackle prospect in the country and the No. 11 player in the state of Pennsylvania.
