Dan Silver posted this yesterday at 1 PM on the Rockne Roundtable on BGI :

"Just spoke with the AD and the coach at Southeast High School (McCoy's school) and they say that "as far as they know, McCoy has eliminated Notre Dame." I still don't buy it, but they are as close as anyone to McCoy, so...just reporting what was told to me"

Some thoughts to think positive and not give up:

1. George West is a highly touted baseball player. By enrolling early, he will miss his entire senior year of baseball and his prom. Think there is a reason he did this?

2. Jason Kates' offer was pulled, Butch Lewis was told there was no room left at the inn. This was from a Rivals article yesterday:

Kates has only taken one official to date to Minnesota although a quiet official to Syracuse has also been suspected. No other officials are currently scheduled for the Rivals250 lineman and his longtime favorite, Notre Dame, has apparently pulled his offer.

Either they suicide recruited McCoy or he's Irish. I would think they'd have to keep things open with Kates for a DT, especially since he was close to verballing earlier.

3. Demetrius Jones' comments stating that he was all but 100% certain McCoy was Irish. I'm not sure he'd just go around saying something like that. Remember, Weis and Ianello keep the verbals informed on recruiting news.

At the same time, ND is being mentioned as dropped and McCoy appears to be comfortable with this.

I'm just saying that, as Big Don has said, it ain't over until it's over.

I figured, after the South Bend Tribune, and The Oklahoman articale stating ND was out I had a feeling the writing was on the wall. I would be very suprised if he commited to ND now. Too bad, we need some DT's.

This is just an odd situation. Totally.

And a great one to be in. Last year, I think we were all hoping for any two star Johnny High School to come in here just for bodies to take up space.

The Defensive POY is still in the mix weeks away from Signing Day.

Hail Charlie.

Just think--If this was all settled what would we have to worry about? Still can't believe Weis would leave Kates and Lewis out if McCoy wasn't in. Not giving up yet!

We didn't leave Lewis out, he had an offer but jumped on the USC bandwagon. As far as Kates, the jury is still out on that one.

Yeah that's just suicidal. I hope this is all a hoax and he's coming.

Lewis, Austin and Moore were all told there was no room left. Kates' offer was pulled.

If Lewis was told this, they had to feel pretty good about their chances with McCoy.

Stay tuned on this. I still think McCoy could end up at ND.

Jiggs:

Then why the games with being comfortable that ND is out?? Or maybe he was ND and changed his mind. For God's sake, just commit and get it over with.

I really don't want Kates I know we need a DT but I'd be more comfortable switching someone like Olsen to DT or developing Paddy into a DT. It looks like Young will pick ND next week, if so that would give us the flexibility to switch someone to DT if McCoy is indeed out of the picture. I don't have very high expectations for Mr. Kates, I feel he'd be a waste of a scholarship, just my opinion.

Strange, because it was reported that Lewis had an offer from ND, and I do remember seeing a ND hat on the table when he choose at the AA game. I would hope that if the case is as you said they would have had McCoy for sure. You know about a bird in hand is worth more than a man child in Oklahoma. Hope I'm wrong, but I don't think we got McCoy.

Lewis says he was told by the ND staff that the class was filled. ND pulled the offer on Kates.

Perhaps we'll get a better read on all of this after signing but both Lewis and Austin had offers but both said they were told recruiting was over.

Kind of confusing? I'll say!

I was hoping for a jiggafini high school. We needed DBs with attitude and wheels!

maybe they meant the oline class was filled? But they were recruiting Lewis as a DT, right?

There are so many "if's" still out there. I won't believe ND is out for McCoy until I hear a confirmed NO from him. All we have heard so far are OPINIONS. For me the door will remain open until McCoy saye it is closed.

On Lewis, prior to the Army game the reports said he was leaning to ND. If he had been told that there was no room it could only mean ND took someone other than him. In that case, it would be logical to deduce that he was upset at that and wanted to make ND look like a second choice. Hence, he might have given the impression he was ND only to make them look bad by choosing USC.

Remember, while these are only teenagers, they have huge egos and are subject to embarassment just like the rest of us.

Now you can take these sentiments to Starbucks and get a cup of coffee for about $3.50.

I think Mccoy is going to OU. And i think Mustain is staying home too, because of Jimmy C. But Jimmy's dad said he didn't care who is in front of him. They think he will beat anyone out for the starting job. But i want JC more than anyone else next year. I just hope they can steal a DT from someone before singing day.

DT will be to 2007 what offensive line was to 2006.

They will need 2 DE and 4 DT next year. Those are minimum numbers.

A couple of targets will be at Junior Day tomorrow. I hope they get offers soon.

2007 should be very defense intensive when recruiting. Linebacker and D Line will be key spots.

exactly and it will be tougher than most of you think, ND will always get the Offensive prospects now but we still gotta go all out for the Defensive ones.

I asked you this in another thread Jigga but I cant find it now, What Junior DTs do you like and why?

Finally confirmation from the young man. McCoy was interviewed by a OK TV station and advised he'll pick between LSU, OU, and USC on Signing Day.

CORRECTION: Should be McCoy, NOT Young.

The two I like the most are Myles Wade (Oregon) and Josepth Barksdale (Detroit).

Wade and Barksdale are more off the field reasons why I like each. Having read a few things about them, they seem like fits on and off the field for Notre Dame and Weis. Barksdale has a 3.5 GPA, 21 ACT and wants to major in Chemical Engineering. He is also 6-4, 315. Wade has a 2.8 GPA and his dad is a big ND fan. Wade called the USC loss "hard to swallow."

As far as their abilities, they're not Gerald McCoy, but they're certainly good enough.

Po'u Palelei (Vegas) is 6-3, 320 (Kates?) and has a 2.5 GPA. He is a former HS teammate of Ryan Reynolds, so OU and Stoops are after him.

Saw This Guy The Last 2 Years

Saw This Guy The Last 2 Years

Junior Defensive Tackle Eyes Irish
By Jeff Baumhower
Jan 17, 2006

Defensive tackle will be a priority for the Notre Dame staff when they start to piece together the 2007 recruiting class. That being the case, Darius Scott of North Chicago Community high school is a player that is Notre Dame’s backyard and he’ll get a long look from the Irish. Irish Eyes spoke with his head coach, Mike Grenda to find out what makes Scott such an attractive prospect.

When the Midwest produces a talented big man that can play along the defensive line, Notre Dame needs to be a player in the recruiting process. When that player resides in the outskirts of Chicago, the Irish need to land the player. North Chicago head coach Mike Grenda believes Darius Scott (6-5 340-pounds) is the type of player that fits Notre Dame’s needs.

“We utilize Darius at offensive tackle and defensive tackle,” coach Grenda said of his standout player. “One thing I like about Darius, and something we have played around with is putting at the defensive end position. Because of his size people think he’s a slow kid, but in actuality he’s a pretty fast kid and he can do some damage at the defensive end. I don’t think many colleges will recruit him at although it’s something we can get away with. He definitely has a great pass rush coming of the end position.

“I definitely see him on the defensive side, most likely defensive tackle,” coach Grenda said of Scott’s future college position. “Darius is able to work a good swim move and he is able to get skinny and find his way between two defenders. That’s a difficult task. You can’t one-man him. You’ve got to double-team him. That leaves your linebackers open who are supposed to make the plays anyway.

“Darius understands that,” Grenda continued. “But what he does best is work the line of scrimmage. He doesn’t get too much depth on the run. He stays on the line of scrimmage and works east and west. When he gets the opportunity he’ll make the tackle. On the pass rush he can handle his own.

There are a lot of big kids that play high school football, but there is generally one particular asset the special players possess.

“It’s his agility,” coach Grenda said of the attribute that makes Scott such a dominant force on the field. “He doesn’t have a big man’s feet. He’s able to work like a 250 pounder. In the forty he’s running a 5.2 at 340 pounds. You put him up against an average lineman with his aggressiveness and power he’s just blowing people off the football field on both sides of the ball.

Notre Dame and Wisconsin are high on Scott’s list of potential suitors, but he’s going to listen to anyone in the country that is interested in recruiting him.

“We have two major schools and everybody else has the idea that he’s untouchable which is not true,” coach Grenda explained. “I’d like to see Darius go through the recruiting process like everybody else does, but Notre Dame and Wisconsin are probably his two biggest schools. He gets letters daily from both schools and we sent film out to Notre Dame recently.

“He loves Notre Dame and who wouldn’t? If you want to play football, that’s the place to be. Darius is already to in love with the idea and to see that come to fruition, I think that would be a beautiful thing for both Darius and for Notre Dame.

I've scouted North Chicago for the past three years. They have had two stud linebackers come out of there for the last two years (Kevin Green, who the Irish looked at but never offered). I've seen Scott as a soph and junior. He's made great strides and should improve even more by the time his senior season rolls around.

North Chicago isn't a pretty area. The kids work hard in school and at football as a ticket to better opportunities.

I know that I continue to grasp at straws but until McCoy comes out and says he has eliminated ND or Kates accepts a schollie from ND, I believe there is a good chance McCoy comes to ND. I have heard rumours of McCoy's girlfriend being pregnant as an reason for him selecting Oklahoma. If that was the case why did he omit only ND, why not omit USC and LSU as well? If he omitted ND for family reasons, why not omit everyone but the homestate team? If there is in fact one remaining schollie and we need a defensive lineman why isn't Kates Irish by now? I don't think that Charlie or John Latina would wait for 8 days after the date that they were rejected by their main guy to have a meeting to discuss where the last schollie was going. Things are just not adding up here. I believe that he will be an Irish surprise on Signing Day.
