Integrity of Admissions for Athletes

This topic was touched on a bit in the Brian Kelly thread and Lax pointed out it was deserving of its own thread so I figured I would take the liberty of starting it. It is well known that ND is stringent in its approach to admissions for athletes so as to make sure the individuals are successful at ND and to protect the integrity of the program at University. However, sometimes these policies can become burdensome for coaches. We know about the allowances made to Coach Holtz and it is speculated that CBK is looking for some of those same allowances. For example, there is some suspicion that AQM was not qualified because of a lack of core classes, but could he still succeed at ND? If his grades and test scores are good enough otherwise, there is no reason to suspect he could not succeed at ND especially with all the help that is provided. Someone asked this question in the Brian Kelly thread: What's the point of building a winning program if you have to sacrifice who you are to get there? Is it really sacrificing who you are to let kids like AQM in? It is obvious you can win with the system in place as we just came off a National Championship appearance. Personally, I like the higher standard ND holds itself to and believe a line has to be drawn somewhere. I think athletes should have to take the same core curriculum other students had to. I don't want them to be funneled into easy majors (not that any exist at ND). What is your opinion of admissions for athletes at ND? Do changes need to be made?

I think that borderline kids can be let in if they get some teachers/pastors/coaches to back their charachter and work ethic. I have no problem letting in a few more meatheads, but we don't need any thugs.

Remember you can change the admissions but you can't change the class work. If the prospect is 4 year college worthy but not necessarily ND worth but can handle and graduate ND then I say take them.

Admission requirements for certain student athletes probably could be lowered as long as the integrity of the diploma they receive is not.

This is anecdotal and might not be typical, but the average ACT score for my year (2011) was about 32 (98th %ile). I knew non-football athletes who scored 24 (74th %ile). Golden Tate was rumored to have gotten a 23. It's not a horrible score but certainly wouldn't have gotten him in to Notre Dame without football.
