Hamilton only averages about 120 games played per year. Surprised he got $25M/yr.

I like it more than the Pujols deal if only due to the length... one hell of a lineup... but if they don't get at least one more quality pitcher then I am not that big of a fan...

If they can get one more picther and hold onto Trumbo... then yeah, I like what they have done.

I think they should send Trout to the Sox for Lackey and Ellsbury. You get your pitcher without leaving a hole in your outfield or lineup. Sound good?

Call me old-fashioned but I would never give an addict who goes through such bad slumps, has been progressively worse since 2010, and strikes out way too much $25m a year

Cardinals are officially an afterthought in their division unless the young guys ALL come through BIG time...and Beltran/Holliday hold up all year.

Otherwise the Cardinals are done and the new year hasn't even started.

Sheesh.

I think we are right behind the Nats and Reds.. And the giants will always be tough

I'd say the Nats, Giants, and Reds have clearly established themselves as top 3 and the Dodgers, Braves, and maybe the Cardinals are the next 3. The rest of the NL is pretty weak outside of those 6.

It'd be hilarious if the Dodgers still don't make the playoffs next year. I seem to remember the Marlins making it rain last offseason and by mid-season they were having a fire sale. I'm also not sold that the Nats or the Reds will be high 90 win teams next year either. I think both leagues are pretty well wide open with about 5-7 teams in each league that could realistically win the pennant in my opinion.

I'd like the Braves to get one more consistent bat in the line up and I'd be comfortable talking about us maybe being the best team in the NL. It'd also help if Uggla could pull his head out of his backside. I'll also be interested to see how McCann comes back after being banged up most of the year last year. One team I'm intrigued with as a potential trading partner for the Braves is the Angels. They need more pitching and have an abundance of outfielders. The Braves have more young pitching than they could ever use and we could use a corner outfielder.

Eh I never count the Cardinals out...ever. They'll make enough noise this year to ruin the Braves season, it seems to be what they live for haha.

The marlins didn't have arguably the best player and pitcher in the game already to build around

Anibal Sanchez signed with the Tigers for 5 year/$80 million.

Jerry Crasnick's story on ESPN.com included this gem:

Sanchez reportedly had reached agreement on a five-year, $75 million contract Thursday with the Chicago Cubs, but the deal apparently unraveled

Uh....or maybe he is just moderately functional at math and realized that $80M is more than $75M? How did the deal "unravel?" If it had unraveled he probably wouldn't have got 80 from Detroit.

Yeah, well now the Cardinals are behind the eight ball because Carpenter won't be his usual self, Beltran will likely regress, Holliday is not going to improve much and we have very little power on the bench. And if Matt Carpenter takes over ofr Schumaker at 2B, Cardinals will have NO power on the bench.

And with Lohse likely gone, the young guns in the STL farm system like Trevor Rosenthal better be ready to perform from Day One for the Cardinals to have any chance.

And Freese needs to avoid ALL deer from now on, too.

The Reds stayed about the same except Votto might be healthy this year. They could reach 100 wins with their pitching and with Choo leading off. The Nationals are the best team in baseball by a good margin IMO. Span was a brilliant pickup for basically nothing, and the pitching staff is still amazing. Harper will get better too.

He wanted to stay with the Tigers, but they were originally only offering a four year deal, he wanted five. Cubs offered 5 at 75 mill. He was going to take it, but the Tigers had a chance to beat the Cubs offer, which they did. That is how it unraveled.

None of those things are a given though. No one foresaw the Phillies dropping off this past year yet they did. No one has given the Giants any respect yet they've won 2 of the past 3 championships and to this day people are still not giving them credit. I just won't believe in the Nats until they do it 2 or 3 years in a row.

Our Sons of the Cuyahoga River will shortly ink, following a physical, Nick Swisher to a 4 year contract with an option for a 5th at $56 Million guaranteed with a possibility of it escalating to $70 million with the $14 million fifth year.

Now a done deal. Steal for the Sox. Poor Pirates, though.

Definitely sucks for the Pirates. I'm not impressed by what I've read about the four prospects Boston is sending to Pittsburgh. Because of their financial constraints and Hanrahan's impending free agency in another year, they either needed to trade him now or before the July trade deadline. Still, you'd think they could have done better than this.

I agree, I just think if they need this crap to get through a season, they should reduce the number of games in a season. Same length of time in calendar months and weeks but reduce it to a 148 game schedule and give these guys extra rest during the season. I know owners and players wouldn't ever go for it, too much money, but it's a joke that they need this kind of crap to just get through the season. The fans (at least this one) hate the ongoing stories and use of drugs in sports, so clean it up. How the hell does anyone expect these guys to play at such a sustained level every night with the travel they rack up. Can't be done, so cut back. What might the Celtics players have taken tonight pre game? Last night, triple overtime game, ended pretty late. Shower up, talk to the press, get to the airport, fly to Charlotte, get to hotel at 2?, 3:00 a.m. who knows when? Get up and play tonight, yeah good luck. Too much money at stake to put the toothpaste back in the tube but that's how we get the video game numbers we get. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
