I think there's some truth to both sides of this. Vanderdoes did tell Justin Hopkins that ND is a "why-not visit", exact words. I think in a sense he feels he just has to take ND up on the opportunity to check the place out; it doesn't mean he's an ND lean or anything. But like NDDomer2 is saying, you don't make that trip if you don't have some interest. He's clearly intrigued.

Remember when we completely ignored Greenberry's visit to Houston literally the day before NSD? Players aren't going to visit a place for a non-game week if they aren't at least a little interested.

I just love the recruiting season.. It seems like I check twitter every few minutes. A national championship game and the recruiting going on is just perfect

Sorry Princess but if I get five free trips, and haven't taken any until December, I don't think South Bend, Indiana is on the list of destinations unless I'm truly interested in Notre Dame.

+1.

Hate to get sassy, but does the "Notre Dame is a magical place" effect only apply when it's a positive for us?

If I had 5 official visits and I lived far away, I would absolutely put South Bend on my list, even in December, for a free trip to the Mecca of College Football in the year she regained her luster.

If I wasn't interested in going to school in South Bend, I certainly would not visit it in the winter time. Kids don't just visit places because along time ago they used to be an elite program. If he's visiting, especially here, in winter, he's interested. ND is not Miami.

You're assuming he already KNOWS the school he wants to attend, thus 4 of his 5 OVs are purely recreational. However, all indications are this kid does NOT know where he wants to go. Therefor, each and every visit is crucial in helping determine which school he will ultimately choose. This doesn't necessarily mean that a ND visit has to mean he will pick here, but it does (more than likely) mean legit interest.

Some food for thought, without a dominating NT the 3-4 doesn’t work. So yeah, if we had to give up a recruit or two (depends on the recruit of course) to land this guy I would have to consider it.

When did it become legal to trade recruits? This discussion is ridiculous!

I'm not saying we trade recruits.
Scenario-the boat is full and we can't take on any more recruits so were done. Then out of the blue EV decides he wants to come aboard. We realllllyyyyy want him. With this proposition before you, do you A). Tell him "sorry we're full" and let him go to SC or B). Sacrifice (don't accept a verbal or even LOI) from another recruit to make room.
I chose B.

But to your point in general, yeah this discussion is ridiculous but what else are we going to talk about.

Somebody else yesterday on another thread said something along these lines.

That it is important not get hung up on losing a particular player through draft or graduation, or not getting a particular recruit.

Its been so long for ND fans that we feel the players we have now are irreplaceable. In a sense of them as people yes this true. Great coaching though is able to retool year in and year out. Its something we haven't seen in a while and is going to take time to get used to.

Look at all the guys ND struck out on last year. Deonte, Tee, R Darby, etc. While Kelly and his staff have targeted difference makers. They have been great in getting us depth so we are solid across the board and aren't screwed if we swing and miss occassionally.

The combination of losing Nix (rather it be in 2013 or 2014) and not getting Eddie V won't mean doom for ND.

The only things deleted from this particular thread were 8 short posts about Fresno, which has nothing to do with Vanderdoes. The deletions were warranted...

There was a short off-topic tangent regarding Kung Fu Panda. I cleaned it up.

Think the NG is important to our defense, but more importantly ND should give Diaco a lot more $$$.

Would you consider 'Bama's 3-4 to be elite or just "very good"? Because their NT, Jesse Williams, is not much of a pass rusher. His 2012 stats: 36 tackles, 2.5 TFL, 1 sack, 2 PBU and 4 QB hurries.

The point is that having a NT that can pass-rush is a luxury. Yes, it makes your defense better, because you can still generate pressure while leaving an extra guy in coverage, but the scheme doesn't depend on it. The 3-4 depends on its OLBs for pass rush; if your ROLB and DOLB can't get pressure on the QB, then you've got serious schematic problems.

I'm certain a mod would never post off-topic, particularly in a recruit's thread.

Chances of getting him seem slim. That said there is a chance. ND really has to wow him.

High 40s and chance of rain in south bend this weekend. Wish the weahter was a bit nicer, although it could be a lot worse.

Ok but he's not coming this weekend. He's going to UW this weekend per the poster above.

The weather is supposed to be crappy here in Seatlle too. All the students will be pretty much gone or on their way out with finals ending throughout this week.

This post reminds me of a particular DVD out of a series of USC football seasons I own...it shows our team arriving in South Bend during the 2007 season, as the players walked off the bus, they were standing quietly and in awe while taking photos of the scene before them - the Golden Dome, with the changing leaves in all their glory.

A scene like that was not repeated anywhere else they have played. South Bend is a trip everyone - including all good Trojans, should make at least once in their lifetime.

It is much different in January than October. Much colder and there is no feuillage, also no game day. His point is that if he wasn't serious about ND, the common sense would be to take a trip to either a big city or some place warm with a lot of girl wearing not so much. Just saying. The campus is beautiful regardless, but you get the point.
