Mustain?

The only reason I wouldn't take Mustain is because it would hurt with recruiting Jimmy C. for next year.

Another reason Mustain could be withdrawing is I heard Houston Nutt and staff may be fired. Bad time to fire your coach that landed arguably the best Arkansas QB ever.

Morons.

It's a compelling story, but it would be relevant if ND had only one QB verbal.

The story that an ND coach was in his home is pure rumor and no one seems to be able to find a source to verify it.

He would be taking up a spot for someone ND actually needs. Do I like Mustain? Sure I do. But not for ND.

Houston Nutt and his staff have done an awful job this year. I'm more surprised that Mustain committed to these coaches. Rumor is that, similar to TW, Nutt refused to make some coaching changes. Therefore, the whole staff will now be gone. Also, I dont think signing the number one QB out of Arkansas keeps you your job.

The only way Charlie takes Mustain is if Jones' rotator cuff injury to his throwing arm is serious. Then he needs an "insurance policy" and may take Mustain. Then Jones would end up being a receiver. If the injury isn't serious, Weis will let Mustain go to Tenn and Jones remains a viable QB in the competiuon for a starting job in '07.

I wasn't aware Jones had a rotator cuff injury, Chad Pennington has had the same injury(twice now) and most of the media here in NY is saying his career may be over. You basically need about a year and a half to come back from that. Unfortunately for the Jets Chad was rushed back, hopefully ND takes it cautious with Jones.

Alot of our recruits have gotten hurt, Jones, Parris, Ryan.

The rotator cuff problem was why Jones and his WR swapped positions in their playoff game. The WR became the QB and Jones got the MVP trophy at WR. I've not read anything about the extent of the injury except the he wasn't well enough to play QB.

While most everyone is having a good time pointing out the CW and Cutcliffe picked Frazor #1, keep in mind it was at the end of his junior year, Cut is gone, and did Frazor progress as much as other QBs in their senior season?

CW may still have Frazor #1 but I don't know that. I'm curious how so many of you have such insight. You also seem to be dead sure about Jones future at QB but many weren't aware of a potential position changing injury. I'm not sure he's a lock for a Div 1 WR if he was interested. Battle didn't take to the role change overnight. It took lot of time and effort before he blossomed into a Div 1 WR despite his athleticism.

One things for certain, all the early verbals has to be driving down hits on the recruiting sites. Janury will be a lot quieter that previous years. Mustain's foray back into recruiting is a boon for business. Urban, Weis, Spurrier, Cutcliffe, of the ole high school coach? Check this freebie from rivals:

Mustain Open?

The silence is deafening down in Springdale, Ark. as the nation's No. 2 quarterback, Mitch Mustain is apparently taking a look around after a commitment to the Arkansas Razorbacks and Houston Nutt this summer. So is Mustain de-committed? Will he end up elsewhere and who are the schools with the best chance?

Mustain, the 6-foot-2, 190-pounder who led Springdale to a state title this season, chose Arkansas over Texas, Note Dame and many others late in the summer. While everyone was keeping an eye on the situation at Arkansas, especially regarding Nutt, there was a collective sigh of relief when the head coach wasn't sent packing after a 4-7 season.

However, that wasn't the only thing Razorback fans were nervous about. They knew that once the focus was off Springdale's season and Mustain could concentrate on other things, mainly the attention he's attracted from others.

The stories are mixed, but either Mustain has kept contact with schools like Florida, Texas (before the Jevan Snead change of heart), Notre Dame and most recently Tennessee. So what will happen?

Arkansas quarterbacks coach Roy Wittke is apparently done at Arkansas, a move that has pushed Mustain into action. According to sources close to the situation, Mustain informed the Arkansas coaches that he was opening up his recruitment again. However, based on what we know, he has not officially de-committed.

So now that he's looking around, who will he look at? Many expect Notre Dame to be a top choice, but the Irish have Demetrius Jones and Zach Frazer already in the fold and an eye on Jimmy Clausen for next season. But the Irish were apparently the runner-up for his services in the summer and it has to be tempting for Charlie Weis to jump back into this fray.

South Carolina, who hasn't landed a marquee quarterback under Steve Spurrier as yet, will most likely be an option as well. They were never really in the mix initially, but a strong season under Spurrier and an attractive quarterback situation could draw Mustain.

Florida is also an option and a lot will depend on Tim Tebow's situation when he announces next week. Florida has told Tebow they're interested in taking two quarterbacks, but would Tebow push away Mustain or vice versa. Florida seems a longshot right now, but watch out for them if Tebow picks Alabama. Especially since teammates Ben Cleveland and Damian Williams are already commitments.

Don't forget Arkansas in still in this battle as well. Mustain committed there for a reason and it simply wasn't for the quarterback coach. Good friend Andrew Norman is also committed and Arkansas is home.

Another interesting twist is that Springdale head coach Gus Malzahn has been mentioned as a potential replacement for Wittke.

There is also ample opportunity early and Mustain has to be interested in teaming with Darren McFadden in that backfield. Arkansas won't give up easily.

The surprise team in this mix, and a team I'd be worried about if I were an Arkansas fan, is Tennessee. The hiring of David Cutcliffe, who has developed Peyton and Eli Manning among others, is a huge attraction to Mustain and his family. You wonder why Arkansas was the team trying to steal Cutcliffe away from Tennessee? Cutcliffe was also a huge reason for Mustain's interest in Notre Dame before he stepped down and the Tennessee quarterback situation is in shambles.

Whatever happens, it will likely happen without comment from the Mustains. Beck Campbell had no comment on the situation when contacted and was upset at some of the printed reports. She would not confirm nor deny if Mustain was de-committed

He tried to throw before the Prep Bowl against Brother Rice but couldn't make a throw more than 15 yards without discomfort. Note discomfort was the term used, not pain. Chris James took the QB spot and Jones moved over to WR. James barely threw the ball most of the day, but in the end found Jones for the game tying TD in OT that was won on the point after.

No one locally seems to be making a big deal about it and Jones himself talked more about the banquet than any injury in recent interviews. Either Coach Spurlock and Jones were keeping it very quiet or it isn't as bad as everyone thinks. His grandmother's passing probably hurt him more than anything else. Jones has repeated numerous times, in local papers, that he is being recruited as a QB and the notion of being brought in as a WR was never mentioned by Cutcliffe, Weis or anyone else. Either he is lying or they are. Or everyone is on the level.

The only time I've heard Jones mentioned as a WR is on this board. That's it. And as soon as I saw the Prep Bowl highlights with him at WR, I knew immediately the rumors would start. Yes, he is fast and can run. But yes, he can throw to. I've seen him...live....really. He's good.

While I can appreciate the comparison, Jones is 18. Chad Pennington is 29 with 6 years of NFL beatings under his belt. Hold your forks on Jones future career and don't stick them in him just yet. He still lined up at wide receiver and made the game winning TD pass in the City Championship game the week before, so the fact that he played probably indicates his future isn't in jeopardy.

In closing, I nominate to move Jones to WR, Frazer to tight end and get Mustain.

Thankfully Rob Ianello is in charge of all this.

If Jones' injury were really that bad, he could not have played WR, either. He is very intriguing to me at QB. We went over his numbers earlier in the year. They weren't huge, but they were about as efficient as I've heard from a HS QB short of Brian Brohm. Add that to his athletic ability. There's no law that says a QB can't perform great in a drop back QB system but still be a serious threat with his feet.

Roy Wittke, the passing coordinator at Arkansas, had Tony Romo (Dallas Cowboys) and Matt Jones under his watch between stops at Eastern Illinois and Arkansas. I know Cutcliffe is as good as they come, but Wittke is no slouch.

If this is true, I don't blame Mustain one bit. Wittke is a genius and a tremendous recruiter. I'm not sure on the circumstances of his departure, but this hurts Arkansas a great deal.

Tongue in cheek or not, that would leave only one QB when Charlie Weis wants two.

Thankfully Rob Ianello is Recruiting Coordinator and Charlie Weis is in charge of everything.

Under Charlie Weis, Ron Powlus, Jarious Jackson, Zak Kustok, Eric Chappell, Arnez Battle, Gary Godsey, Carlyle Holiday, Matt Lovcecchio, and Jared Clark all would have performed to their potential. Charlie would have tailored his offense to the talent on hand not forced Powlus to run the option nor Holiday to be dropback QB. Charlie may well have not recruited some of those athletes but if he had, or if he had inherited them, they all would have received better instruction, have had better on-field support, have had a better game plan, and they all would have excelled to the best of their abilities.

Man, your posts are just too good.

Exactly what I'm saying. They already have two guys and they are running out of room in this class.

Mustain and Harvin are great players, but look at the big picture here. They're already close to getting verbals from JUNIORS. The ship has sailed on the Class of 2006. If you want to come to ND now, you're going to have to do it as a walk on.

If Mustain were to commit to ND I'm sure one of our other QB's would decommit. No way three highly touted QB's sign together in one class. I'd rather have Frazer and Jones anyway, they're good enough, otherwise Weis wouldn't of offered them.

The Mustain rumors are pure rubbish IMO. He'll go to Tennesse, or if Tebow chooses bama, than Mustain could possibly go to Florida. I don't want him, unless Frazer or Jones decommit, which I don't see happening.

Guys, I really think it is over.

Toryan Smith will go Irish today.

Carufel will don an Irish hat at the Army AA game.

Reuland should be #25 after Smith, before Carufel

ND's position with Young gets better and better. Gerald McCoy's mom LOVES Notre Dame after Coach Haywood's recent visit. His buddy George West will EE and ND will get both McCoy and Young. #1 class in America.

With Yeatman, that would make 29. IowaDomer said way back when it would be 30.

Charlie's road tripping back in spring paid off.
