So is he going to commit or just be confused???

I honestly think he's our back-up plan in case the higher players go somewhere else. He's kind of fat.

He's a very highly sought after prospect.

While I agree with his makeup, he clearly didn't get to this point by being overevaluated by everyone.

Despite the DT market being slim ( no pun) this year, he is still one of the best out there.

But this situation is really bizarre to say the least.

You know, I've said it before and I'll say it again....at this point who in the hell cares (except for him). My God, it's not like we're recruiting Warren Sapp, L.T., or even Mean Joe Green. It is Jason Kates. If you are going to commit...then do it already. If you aint then go away!!!! I am as tired as a one legged stripper doing a lap hop of this whole Jason Kates ordeal.

The Schollie Train is slowly leaving the station so if you're getting on board then get your a$$ on. If not, move away from the tracks.

We're a little thin at DT with no locks on the horizon to be going at him with that attitude. Especially considering he's not the only recruit that hasn't committed yet. Why expect of him what you don't expect from others?

Because other recruits haven't said that they are in then retracting their statement. This seems like a game to this kid. All I'm trying to say is if you are in then SAY IT!!!!

He said it to a reporter. It wasn't to a coach, so he hasn't retracted any commitment. As fans, we like to follow recruiting, but in reality we have very little right to know.

I don't think it sounds like a game. I think it sounds like a big decision, which it is. It's huge. And not everybody grew up seeing the world through blue and gold glasses like most of us. If he waits too long and misses out, oh well. But if the coaches still want him, how can the fans pull that crap with him? None of these guys are signing anything until February.

Scoop is right. Although I think Kates a little too juicy, I can see Charlie using him as a run stuffer. He looks like he would be a plug in the middle. They had a couple of guys like that on those New England Super Bowl teams. It's kind of hard to run up the middle when you're O-line can't move that big 300+pounder out of the way. Also, I think that Notre Dame is at the point now where they're going to have to wait for a number of these guys to announce. That's just the kind of guys they are going after. I think it's fun.

True, but if he is just going to let words fly like this without knowing who he is speaking to, don't you think that shows some immaturity or at the very least, carelessness?

Personally, in everything I've read on Kates, I don't think he is Notre Dame material. Unfortunately, we are so thin that we do need him. Supply and demand, I suppose.

He thought it was a player on the phone so he just said "yes"? odd.

I personally think he is Irish and just wants the luxury of a few more pampered visits elsewhere.

Yes, it probably does show some immaturity. But he's a high schooler. There is bound to be some immaturity. I know darn well when I was 17 that I didn't know all the right things to say at every occassion. If the big knock on a kid is not saying the right thing to a recruiting reporter, that's not a bad thing. Other schools are taking kids with assault and drug charges and with terrible academic records. God forbid a Notre Dame recruit says the wrong thing to a reporter while in a hurry to leave the house.

It probably doesn't matter if you think he's Notre Dame material. The coaches who talk to him much more than you or any reporter obviously think he is.

Here is the scoop guys. Jason Sapp spoke with Kates' mother a few nights ago.

Jason Kates likes Notre Dame, but Va Tech and Cuse are doing some very dirty recruiting. Bad mouthing ND, telling Kates that they don't treat minorities well.

His mother is an ND fan and really wants him to go there, but wants him to decide. Kates did not grow up with a father figure, so he listens to these coaches when they tell him things. The process has been very difficult for him and as much as he's tried to enjoy it, he hasn't been able to because of the negative selling everyone is doing.

But not Weis. Weis has been the only one to sell ND and not bad mouth the other schools. Kates is aware of McCoy and his decision time frame, as well as the limited number of seats on the plane. He has a couple of teammates going to Maryland, but his mother prefers he not go there just because his classmates are.

So, after all this I've concluded that Jason Kates sounds like a good young man, but he is just that....young. As someone who had to make this kind of choice on a smaller level without as many exciting options, I think that Kates has a big decision in front of him and he's trying to be thorough.

But he also has people that are blatantly lying to him about a lot of things. I've lost a lot of respect for Va Tech and Syracuse, I can tell you that much. Kevin Rogers of Va Tech is recruiting Kates, by the way. those who bad mouth their competitors rather than sell themselves usually have something to hide or not as much to offer. There. I said it.

His coach says he is leaning on ND. Weis and Latina are as straight up as it gets.

Mr. Kates, this is one ND fan that would love to have you in the blue and gold.

I'm going to refrain from commenting because I understand he is young and probably a bit immature. Hopefully everything works out. I'll leave it at that.

Well, the Syracuse coaches are correct. We didn't treat their minorities very well on the field. Come to think of it-we didn't treat any of them very well.

Screw Kevin Rogers. I hope Kates can see through that garbage.

AH................This is the SAME Kevin Rodgers, who was Boob Davie's 'offensive guru'......well, we've all seen how well he did with 'Cuse this year didn't we.

Jason, follow, in your McDevitt brother's footsteps (that would be RICKY WATTERS) and come to ND.

We have used up a lot of space on Mr. Kates. I think it is time for a home visit from Mr. Weis to either settle the committment or move on. Kates apparently knows that some of the ND offers are open-ended (McCoy) and he may feel he is entitled to that too. He is noooooo McCoy!!!! I will not comment again on Kates until he makes a decision. We pay Latina a lot of money to recruit these guys. Enough said.

It seems to me that those on Davie's staff while at ND (Rogers, Urban) have a lot of bad, negative things to say about ND and feel that they need to puke it on recruits and their parents even now.

Urban does this in the book Recruiting Confidential while at Bowling Green. It is something that we NEVER did with recruits when I was in school. I was on a visit with my dad when one of the coaches started bashing another rival school that we had looked at. I told my dad right then and there I wanted absolutely nothing to do with that school because they were probably intimidated by their rivals and I would never be a part of a place like that. BIG turnoff, Jason Kates.

I think these guys know Kates is a strong ND lean and also know he is somewhat confused and vulnerable, so they're taking advantage.

Keep talking $hit, guys. It won't do much good.

Correct me if I am wrong, at this time we believe Wenger and Carufel are Irish silent verbals. Reuland, Young and McCoy have spots saved for them and we have 5 openings. I would have to believe Kates would have to wait until one of the others said no before Charlie would accept him into the fold.

Carufel and Reuland probably are. Toryan Smith is a pretty good bet come Monday.

Young and McCoy have spots saved for them.

Whatever happens, he sounds like a good kid and I feel somewhat guilty for ranking on him for the past few months. He is a good football player but he isn't nearly as mature as some of these other guys. He's a kid. And it sounds like he is taking the decision making process very seriously.

Choosing ND is a great opportunity. If Weis and Co offered him, there has to be a reason.

Jason Kates has ideal strength and quickness in a DT prospect, and NC St is one of the schools he’s looking at. The 6-3, 320 DT from Bishop McDevitt in Harrisburg, PA holds scholarship offers from schools like NC State, Syracuse, Minnesota, Maryland, Michigan, ND and PSU. "Syracuse and Minnesota have been recruiting me harder than the others lately," said Kates. "They’ve made a push for me in the last couple of weeks. They aren’t my two leaders, but they’re up there now. I like the interest they’re showing." How high is Kates’ interest level in NC St? "Pretty high," he said. "They’ve recruited me for a little while now and it’s a place I like. I might visit them later on. I don’t have any [other] visits scheduled, but I might go there and a few other places." Kates has already visited Minnesota and Syracuse, and an earlier visit to ND was canceled due to scheduling conflicts. He hopes to shred some weight before entering college to improve his footwork and speed. By Justin Rowland
