First let me say I am exhausted after todays win. A win is a win. Proud of the team to come back and grind out a win. But is it me or does ND play down to lesser teams? Is ND stadium some kind of kryptonite?

That it might...but its a legit question. I know teams give everything to beat nd but when they are not at home they dominate teams of much better quality.

I think it's a combo of....
1. coming down off and emotional high from last week.
2. we are still "learning to win", and "learning to win ugly"
3. we have a young QB who still gets shaken (he'll get there, just still learning)
4. Pitt is a lot better than their record
5. We are 9-0, but we can still be a turnover machine if we're not careful

We still aren't at the point where we can consistently handle inferior competition, but the fact that we're ending up on the winning side of these contests is a sign of progress.

There certainly seems to be something about this team not playing as well at home.. Is it the pressure? Is it the chaos leading up to the game? Who knows.. it could be the flu!

If you look at CFB in general, you see pretty significant variation in performance week to week from many teams. There are so many aspects that factor into it. Is there something to ND's performance at home? BK seems to think so, as I believe he's suggesting changes to the gameday routine. Do we play down to competition? Maybe, but we have no cupcakes and it's hard to get college student-athletes to perform consistently over a 12-week season. I wish it were different, but recognize that we're a pretty young team, and I'll look at it glass half-full and be glad that we're getting up for the tougher teams.

Everyone is gunning to beat ND. It's impossible to sneak up on anyone.

agreed OP. Its weird how the results away from ND stadium are:

50-10
20-3
41-3
30-13

and in ND stadium the average margin of victory is like 4.5...

Pitt is a solid team, and it has stayed close to Notre Dame the past several years. BK beat them 23-17 in 2010 and 15-12 last year. Pitt also has a very good coach. It's a mark of Notre Dame's talent that the Irish only showed up for one quarter, the fourth, and still won.

The crowd was tremendous today. The 2nd half was as loud as its been all season. We played uncharacteristically sloppy today. It had nothing to do with the playing in front of the home crowd.

Yeah it seems like it. I think it's the sign of a younger team that doesn't haven't a lot of experience with this amount of pressure and success. Like someone else mentioned, the fact that we're still winning means we're learning and progressing.

It seems to be better when on the road. I'm not sure if its the distractions and everyone telling them how great they are or what the case is. But the farther away they get from South Bend the better it seems. Which might be a good thing because USC is on the road and the bowl game will be away from home.

I think this game might be an outlier since it does seem that the team was battling with some illnesses, but I do think there's something to be said about this year's team playing better on the road. Since I'm obviously not there with the team, this is all speculation but I think it might be a combination of the comfort and distractions at home vs. the focus and pressure that they face on the road.

As for the distractions, I think Kelly mentioned earlier this week that he saw a few players giving tours on the Friday before the game recently. He also mentioned that he was trying to manage some of the obligations that the players having for home games, such as the pep rallies and so forth. While it could be convincingly argued that players have always had these, or some form of similar obligations, it does seem that Kelly thinks the players are somewhat distracted and is trying to reduce these distractions. Playing at home would seem to be vastly different than away games where Kelly has the players in a highly organized, focused, and scripted itinerary for over twenty-four hours prior to kickoff.

As for the pressure, it seems that this team reacts well to adversity. You can take yesterday's game as an example. It seems that they play their best football when their backs are against a wall. Perhaps being on the road immediately puts them in a state of high awareness and performance and thus, better results.

Good lord was the stadium loud. We said 4 rows behind the band. On 3rd down late in the 4th, the band plus Crazy Train was unreal...
