I was up late last night and flipped to this show...

I saw two episodes and I thought it was really good at showing how a program is run. The camera goes to practices, team events and even a class for the basketball team. Calipari sits and talks to the camera in his office and talks about goals for the team. The crew catches Cal talking to players about what they need to work on and making sure they don't get too down on themselves. The show basically is all about how unique it is at Kentucky in that they reload every year. They don't have much of a program. Its a string of teams, but not a program. They said they didn't return a single starter (I think) from last year's team.

I don't very much care for how Calipari runs his program. But I do think he is a very good motivator and recruiting. I wouldn't say he is the best in game coach.

This is however a great recruiting tool I would say. The show is presented really cool and the insight you get is awesome. I wouldn't mind seeing ND do something like this...

So for the basketball fans on this forum I would recommend you watch the show, especially if you are interested in learning more about coaching. Are you a fan of Calipari? To me, he seems like the Kiffin of college basketball...

I had a problem in one of the episodes when he talked about the question of telling a player to go pro or not.

He said something along the lines of "How do I tell a kid to come back and he gets hurt? He's screwed."

And I thought that's what a degree is for, but obviously he didn't even mention that.

Makes me appreciate ND that much more for actually looking out for the player's best interests whether it is in sports or in life.

He uses the ability to go pro early in his recruiting pitches.... certainly different from ND philosophy...

Not that I disagree with you, but what makes you say that?

The one and done bullshit. The elite of college basketball plays for one season and then goes pro. There are some exceptions like Cody Zeller and Evan Turner but for the most part the elite kids are one and done. It's hard to blame the kids since David Stern made the rule that they have to be a year removed from high school to enter the draft. I'd like to see a rule made that requires them to be at least two years removed. It will produce better college basketball and ultimately better NBA basketball.

Relatively easy to recruit when you use bags of cash.

I agree. It seems like a pointless rule that in effect only creates teams full of mercenary freshman players. These players can hardly even be called student-athletes when they know all along they're leaving right away to go to the NBA. Think they go to class hardly at all in that second semester? If they even went in the first?

They should just get rid of the rule. Kids that want to go to schools will still go, and it'll lower the impact of one and done mercenary players. If those players want to skip college and try their hand in the NBA, then they should be allowed to do so.

thats Lane Kiffins approach as well...."you've heard of the Tampa-2 defense in the NFL?? Well, we have the guy that invented it!"

They advertise the number of pros they have sent to the NFL like they list heismans and NC's...sell, sell, sell, sell....thats is one of their big recruiting pitches.

I guess I phrased that wrong... Its not that I have a problem with selling the pros you turn out, but he tells recruits specifically about being a one and done player... that, I don't like

More specifically, Calipari...

Everywhere he has gone has been sanctioned.

Its only a matter of time before it happens at Kentucky.

People like Calipari honestly make me feel that its time the NCAA start penalizing individuals rather than programs.

FWIW Nerlens Noel reminds me so much of Dwight Howard. He's gonna be a beast.

The whole one and done thing is just the tip of the iceberg with him. Between that his relationships with WWW, Jay-Z, Lebron. That program is everything that's wrong with college sports.

Particularly with those like Calipari who get sanctioned at multiple places. Although there is something to be said about these institutions that entrust their programs to a known cheater.
