After the thread about how many titles Bama has claimed I started thinking about a possible scenario for our Irish. There is a possibility that we could finish undefeated and still not play for a NC. So my question is this:

If we finish undefeated and don't get a spot in the NC game, but, we win our BCS bowl game, would anyone have a problem with us claiming a championship?

I honestly don't think the university would claim one, but, personally I would have no problem if they did.

What more could we have done?

This scenario could very well play out, and it will be incredibly disappointing. I still have a fairly hard time believing that Notre Dame will be held out of the BCS Championship if they are undefeated.

With that being said, I will not claim a National Title when speaking about this season, unless we actually play in the game. There is still 4 weeks to play and there are losses out there for every team, including the mighty Alabama. This doesn't mean these teams will actually lose, but the games still have to be played.

Only if the AP poll votes us the Champions, the winner of the BCS is by rule the BCS champion but if the AP does vote ND cause they possibly blow out an undefeated KSU/Oregon then ND would claim that title cause ND only claims AP championships.

Personally we should claim the title if we win out plus the Bowl game and Bama wins the title just to spite them for claiming 2 championships in years ND clearly won, 1930 and 1973.

Bama claimed another championship when you created this thread.

There is another. I recall being a little sad when they sucked for so long. I am over that now. The Bama fans act like they have been unstoppable for a century. They don't realize that they are about a 7 million dollar a year offer from Haslam and his Browns away from mediocrity again. Haslam would get a coach and get rid of a Vol nemesis in one swoop.

Then Chucky to Tennessee and *bing*bam*boom* the SEC is flipped on its ear. That would be cool.

Not sure I'd want to hire Saban as my coach if I were an NFL owner, though. If I was a college president? All day.

As a CFB fan, I really don't like Saban. As a Miami Dolphins fan, I despise his a$$!

He's just ahead of Cam Cameron(never trust a man with two first names) for picking Ted Ginn #9 overall rather than taking Brady Quinn.

As a Browns fan, I would be furious if this happened. Saban was our defensive coordinator before Modell moved us, and a great one at that. But we all know how he fared at Miami and his antics at Alabama. No thank you.

Regarding the question, I wouldn't claim a championship unless we actually win the title game. Yeah, I know it's a flawed system, but it's called the National Championship game for a reason and it seems kind of petty to be claiming to be National Champs even if we didn't win the title game. I guess we'll just have to cross this bridge when we come to it.

I went thru the national championship archieves on wickipedia just for fun. If Notre Dame claimed a national title in all the years they were rated #1 before the modern era ( or like Alabama does ) Notre Dame would have something like 20 titles. Alabama fans live in another world-dont even bother with reasoning with them. 'This just in Alabama made a first down and claimed another National Championship'. The latest on a talk show out of Birmingham has been the Alabama people want Notre Dame in the championship game to get revenge on not being #1 in 1966/1973. Be carefull what you wish for Alabama fans you have a great program but let it be known this is a very good Notre Dame team. Personally it doesnt matter to me if they play each other in a title game -I saw enough in Norman last week to tell me this program is going in the right direction. Just get to the Coliseum 11-0.

From wiki:

Notre Dame has won eight wire service (AP or Coaches) national championships.

Notre Dame claims national championships in an additional three seasons, for a total of 11. Notre Dame, however, is often credited with 13 in total. The 1938 and 1953 seasons are the reason for the discrepancy. In the 1938 season, 8–1 Notre Dame was awarded the national championship by the Dickinson System, while Texas Christian (which finished 11–0) was awarded the championship by the Associated Press. In the 1953 season, an undefeated Notre Dame team (9–0–1) was named national champion by every major selector except the AP and UPI (Coaches) polls, where the Irish finished second in both to 10–1 Maryland. As Notre Dame has a policy of only recognizing AP and Coaches Poll national championships post-1936, the school does not officially recognize the 1938 and 1953 national championships.

Notre Dame has been voted national champion by at least one selector in an additional ten seasons (1919, 1920, 1927, 1938, 1953, 1964, 1967, 1970, 1989, 1993).

That means 23 using the Alabama method.
