NCAA approves tougher sanctions for rule-breakers

We have sought all along to remove the 'risk-reward' analysis that has tempted people — often because of the financial pressures to win at all costs — to break the rules in the hopes that either they won't be caught or that the consequences won't be very harsh if they do get caught.

Infractions that occur as of Tuesday but are not resolved before Aug. 1. 2013, will be subject to the new sanctions. Schools currently under investigation, such as Miami, also could be hit with the new penalties if their cases are not resolved before Aug. 1, too.

That 4 tier system changes nothing. It'll just allow secondary infractions to go unpunished like they always have by placing them in 2 categories.

How freaking stupid is the NCAA? Jesus tap dancing Christ.

Sounds like they're creating a standard set of penalty guidelines to address such matters.

Look, I agree w/ everyone else that the NCAA is a joke, but this at least shows they're trying to move in the right direction.

I personally like the motion to toughen up on requirements relating to postseason eligibility and academic performance. It goes hand and hand with winning at all costs. Some of these kids aren't even going to class, but the teams are winning championships and the schools are getting showered in dollars.

but these kids "dint come to play school"

At least their pretending to make an effort. i'll reserve judgement until i see how the schools under investigation get punished.

I don't believe the NCAA has the stones to do anything like that. They will talk a big game up until a big program gets caught then they slap them on the wrist and send them along.

Which is what the ncaa has done to Alabama in the recent past. They were prime candidates to get absolutely HAMMERED in the early 2000's as "Repeat Violators," yet the ncaa slapped them on the wrist.

Nothing ever came from the Julio Jones/Trent Richardson fine clothing store incident either.

Oh yeah-- that's right!

I feel good for Trent also knowing he was able to save money after he signed his contract not having to go buy an Escalade...as his had already been parked in his driveway for a year.

Only Alabama fans think it isn't fishy that a 20 year old, living below the poverty line, with 2 children, can't afford a decked out Escalade.
