Sloppy. Undisciplined. Nice to win, but if we keep being so undisciplined we're going to eventually pay for it. Clean it all up and we may have a legitimate chance to go all the way because of our defense.

3 of the penalties [false starts] were on Golic. Bench him and you will have much improved better O line play.

Is this goal line stand better than one they had against Washington in 2009? That is debatable

Nonsense. We sucked in 2009 and that game was meaningless. This game kept us in the NC hunt. Not even a close comparison.

No one said that the kid couldn't play. He had a terrible game, though. You can't just discount the false start penalties. Those are yards that he cost the offense. We only ran for 150 yards as a team, so it's not like his run blocking added a crap-ton of yards to the offense. He's got talent, but he had a terrible game. It happens.

On at least one, everyone but the center moved. For whatever reason, it got tagged to #57.

Anyone who was at the game want to shed some light on what the atmosphere was like in the stadium? It sounded like it got pretty loud at times.

The atmosphere was great. Rainy but not too cold. Real Midwestern football weather. Was incredibly loud at the end. Some boos when the offense was looking so inept. This is ND. The fanbase still expects more precision. Students rushed the field after the game. Some players (Moore, GAIII) ran up and down to the far endzone after the game. Cierre Wood was talking trash to the Stanford players after the last play. Was pulled away by a couple of teammates.

As somone who attemded both games i can assure you that tonights game will go down as one of the classic games in ND history. Certainly up there with 05 SC and 88 UM (i wouldnt say as high as 93 FSU or 88 MIA) just because it wasnt a 1-2 matchup

I read somewhere that we've only allowed 52 points through the first six games. That is the least amount of points allowed since 1976. I know I'm being overly optimistic here but after tonight's performance I think the defensive unit has the opportunity to create history!!

Atmosphere was really cool. Russell was going nuts after the 4th down stop, it was loud as hell, I didn't like the students storming the field at all though.

Kelly did a very poor job overall but it worked out. Tuitt could legitimately be the #1 pick of the 2014 NFL Draft or at least the first defensive player picked if he keeps it up. Farley is a monster. Rees did great at the end and Riddick is a better receiver than running back which I have mentioned before.

People are talking about Golson definitely starting next week, but will he even be able to go? He looked really out of it, and there is no need to rush a kid with a concussion. If he needs a week, you want it to be now against BYU and not have him have to miss the Oklahoma game.

C'mon now...it was 2 for 10 yards. I mean, c'mon...I'm not going to go through all the mistakes, but there are o'plenty to go around.

It was 3. Not that that, in and of itself, is a huge thing. The thing is, first of all: At home, there is no excuse for a false start. It usually means that an Offensive Lineman is getting worked by his defensive counterpart, and is trying to get a jump on the snap count. It's, at best, a mental error that indicates that you are unable, or unwilling, to focus on each and every play. The other thing is when they came:

The first one came in the Red Zone, with his team down by 7, and at the very end of the 3rd Quarter. The next one was the next down...... your team needs that score, and you are making rookie mistakes in the Red Zone?

What kind of history? You do realize that ND's history is littered with dominant defenses, right?

This x1 zillion. Need him more in the slot, and more Wood running the ball.

I'm kind of tired of hearing this garbage. Last year it was "oh he's miss managing the QB's". Now it's "ohhh the play calls". News flash, Christ isn't lighting it up in Kansas and our QB is playing pretty erratic. The big plays have been there. When Golson tries not to do too much and settles down we move the ball. If we take care of the ball and eliminate some bonehead penalties we could have beaten this team comfortably.

Yup Golson needs to start executing.

My observation regarding Riddick is that it seems like Kelly is using him as a power back. People seem to be bagging on him a lot because he's not getting huge chunks of yards, but he is getting hard yards. He is helping wear down the defense a lot, IMHO. Then the second half comes and a tired defense has trouble dealing with Wood and GAIII. Remember the Miami game was really close at half and then the run game just opened up. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems like Wood is not getting much 1st half action. I think it's because Kelly likes pounding Riddick in an effort to help wear down the D.

Also, penalties killed. Definitely need to clean that up.

Absolutely agree with this. He is there to make the hard yards. No one was making head-way against that Cardinal D until we starting wearing them down. And he runs with emotion and anger, which helps the team. There was a point where Golson was losing his confidence after the fumble in the endzone. We get pinned with poor field position because of yet another penalty on a kick-off (that really hurt in a field position battle all game), and Riddick rips off a long, hard run. And then just starts screaming. Think it set the tone at a time when the team was teetering imo.

Also, i think the main reason he gets the nod is that he such a threat on passing coming out of the back-field. It probably creates alot more flexibility for play-callling. But you have to run him to sell it. Anyway, he was great in this game and that catch towards the end was a game saver.

1. We're 6-0

2. Estamos seis y cero

3. Rick Reilly and Mark May can STILL eat a d*ck

4. Our Defense is out of this world.

5. Move Riddick into the slot more and allow for wood and GAIII to get more touches

6. Golic Jr. needs to be locked in a closet during the week if gameday should ever come back to ND...

7. I love each and every last one of you guys on this board...It's been a fun ride so far!
Mike Leach style
Can't afford the mental mistakes at OK or USC. That said, I was more PO'd with Hurcules's whiffs. He's two strong and fast to let that happen to him. He should have destroyed those guys like he did the sled in practice.
he just wasn't sustaining them...he kept going for a knockout which wasn't going to happen to those dudes

Wtf are you talking about? That is awesome the crowd showing their support for the team

To be honest, I don't think the crowd was "storming" the field as is typical when students storm the field. For us, it was more of a celebration and enjoyment of the moment, winning a type of game that we haven't won in a long time. It wasnt like we were shocked we beat Stanford and stormed the field, but more of a thank you in a way. Celebrating on the field with the players was an experience I will always remember.

My only 2 things that stick out to me, and might cost us some time this year, are these:

Diacos lack of a blitz. I don't know why this bothers me so much, but it does.

&

Kelly's conservative Tulsa play calling. 3rd & goal at the end of the game and you run it up the middle instead of tossing a fade to Eifert? Eifert is like Mr. Automatic. Don't get me wrong, I am more than pumped that we won, but it could have been before OT.

I'd love to see some screen plays and they have to go deep early in every game, if for no other reason then to show teams they have to defend the whole field.

A deep strike early would aid in clearing out the box.

Nothing feels better than sitting in my apartment with my 2 roommates from Tally with all four of their parents plus 5 other FSU fans and an Auburn fan all cheering against the Irish and seeing us stuff Stanford on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th down in OT to win it....God I love this team!

Being at the game, it didn't look like a field storming at all, just the student body congregating with the football team in the corner by the students.

I thought the playcalling was really bad. Too many passes, not enough runs, Cierre Wood should be allowed to do two consecutive plays, too many Riddick runs, we should not have been throwing when Golson got strip-sacked, we didn't do a single screen all game even with the overload blitzes. I thought the playcalling kept us from getting in a groove.

The biggest thing holding back the offense is that Golson doesn't play with anticipation. There were a number of awesomely called plays where if he makes the pre-snap read and delivers the ball immediately it's a HUGE play. Every single time he was late, didn't see the open guy, held the ball too long, etc.

When we get into a rhythm running the ball and call quick plays... i.e. "throw it immediately to this guy".... he seems to be far more comfortable back there. It's when he's asked to diagnose where to go with the ball that he tries to wait until someone gets open before actually throwing it... where what he needs to be doing it beforehand assuming he's going to be open.

So I don't know whether to fault the playcalling because EG isn't capable of making those plays yet or... to fault EG because he isn't capable of making those plays yet... bottom line though is that the coaches saw things we could exploit and EG failed to exploit them.

Absolutely. He should have had TJ Jones for six on the opening drive.

Golson held the ball too long on a few posessions, he did it in the end zone and gave up a TD. LAter when he was on the run, and chose to turn it back up field rather than go out of bounds, causing him to fumble the ball, I must admit I had a spontaneous profanity-laced outburst that surprised ppl in my house. Golson CANT hold on to the ball for too long, and he CANT fumble the ball. run out of bounds, take a sack, do anything but fumble the ball.

Golson cannot become stagnant in his progression, he needs to step it up.

Agreed. Not going out of bounds is why that game went into overtime. Keep it in bounds and there's no drama because we score easily on that drive. No need to be a hero. Those seem like young players mistakes against the best defense we've played all year. He's a huge work in progress and he didn't play well for 90% of the game.

Diacos lack of a blitz. I don't know why this bothers me so much, but it does.

Diaco often run blitzes his corners. He also situationally pass blitzes. With the push he can get from his front, there's no reason for him to blitz more often and expose his young secondary. Diaco has done a magnificent job.
