Most people will down play this transfer bc we have other tight ends but I think this is a big loss. He would have been a senior next year and he is probably our best blocking tight end.

any loss is huge when you're looking to build depth, but its not a deathblow.

Remember when we thought ND was "tight end U?" Sheesh. Next year we'll be counting on a TE core with a collective 2 years of experience. I think Ragone and Rudolph probably would have been ahead of Will on the depth chart anyway, but it is still a tough loss. Hard to blame the guy with the depth issue and the whole suspension for drinking at a private party thing.

How does USC keep all of there players? I mean they have a lot of depth in every skill position. I never really hear about their players transferring...........

I don't think depth chart issues have anything to do with his decision. In re: to the drinking suspension, he was poorly treated and personally I am not shocked he is leaving.

Does that mean you think he'd be ahead of either Rudolph or Ragone on the depth chart or that it wouldn't matter had the drinking thing not happened?

how much has he contributed the past two years? Sorry to see anyone leave, but it was not like he was leading the team in receptions over the past two years. Rudolph got valuable experience this year and hopefully has he gets bigger an stronger will become a good tight end as Fasano and Carlson were.

RB Broderick Green
RB Emmanuel Moody
WR Vidal Hazelton

The USC players that transfer are generally 4th string or worse

I agree, USC has players Committing assaults (malaeuga) Sex charges(Sanchez), Nebraska let felons play(Phillips) among others, but a guy drinks and gets treated like a serial killer? TE is not a huge concern but the double standard that exists among different programs is astounding.

The simple answer is this, they win. It is always easier for a player to stomach getting beat out, or biding his time when you are competing for National Championships. Also, when you win as much as they do, and you recruit as well as they do, you tend not to miss people much (Case in point, Moody, the tailback at Florida now).

Well, this year there was the whole suspension thing. Last year he had 6 catches behind stud John Carlson. Plus, he's a better blocking TE than receiving. He'd be our best blocking TE right now, and blocking is sorely needed. I think we'll be OK with Ragone, Rudolph and Fauria, but still not cool to lose guys. Depth matters.

except charges were never filed against Sanchez, but don't let facts get in the way of a good rant.

he would still be by far the best blocking tight end on the team.

I do not disagree, but I think Charlie would insert Rudolph/Ragone in his offense.

Another thing USC has going for them is they probably wouldn't lay down a year suspension for drinking at a party. Even if it followed a DUI.

USC has a very successful program. They fight and compete for the chance to play one year. They are not promised anything and don't even think they would start as freshmen. I mean, is it more complex than that?

Sorry to hear he is leaving. Sad to see anyone go, I'm sure he won't be the last. I think we will be fine without him. Anybody else got a guess of who's leaving?

Fasano is the man, I get to watch him play down here in Miami every week and the offense that coach Sparano has in place is great for him. I love it when Irish players go to my Dolphins. Im still content on murdering Cam Cameron if I ever see him for passing on Quinn to take Ginn jr. in the draft.

You have to watch this video, everyone under the sun wanted Quinn and we fucking pass on him for a average wide out from Ohio state. I still get just as mad now as I did that day.

more than any other factor THIS is why CW's job should be questioned at this point... even those who say we should never lose to Syracuse and the like can see how a team led by sophs and freshman could stumble... MAYBE it's CW, MAYBE its not...

but this is different... you could literally take the transfers from the last three years use them as the core of a whole new team and win a bowl game with them... this CLEARLY shows CW has lost this team for the most part and I am more sick of this than anything...

how many players are we gonna lose before this becomes more of an issue to the average Irish fan??? the ammount of jumpers has just been flagrant under Weis

Maybe because all their sins aren't broadcast to the entire world, and athletes aren't suspended and humiliated for drinking a beer after receiving a concussion.

:)

I side with this WAY MORE than scoutgods... and other than playing time it is my understanding that PC promises a ton to the average player... for the most part SC takes kids that would be future lifers if not for football and that alone keeps them in LA... and really the school that comes to mind with the most transfers OTHER than ND is SC off the top of my head

Well put. Big ups or props or little green things or whatever to you on that one. I just gave you 1,000 dollar things. Treat yourself to a surf lesson from Laird Hamilton's wife.

True lots of kids leave SC. But he gets them all. He owns the state. And the proof that this work there is that players that do share time handle it well. It is the second largest city in the country with no NFL team to distract attention. Joe McKnight will be a first rounder and handle one third the touches in college that he would at any other program and he is, so far, fine with it.

USC also allows JC transfers which allows them to get a sophomore or junior transfer. This pushes out a junior or senior with someone who may be a better fit for the offense or is just a better all-around player. This also allows for depth. So you do have players transferring out of USC but they are juniors or seniors that probably weren't top pics as HS players. This is yet another luxury ND does not have by not allowing JC transfers.

I agree with your post, accept for the part in bold.

Actually, he's not happy with it. In fact, he bitches about it frequently. I know someone (as midwestdork would put it, "a highly placed source") in the AD's office at USC, and over a month ago (maybe 2 months ago??) Joe McKnight had a meeting with Carroll about his touches. Then a week later it came out in the L.A. Times that he wanted more touches. The funny thing is that he fumbles seemingly all the time, but he still complains. Then again, he was supposed to be their next Bush, and he hasn't been featured as much as Bush was (3 reasons: fumbles, RB depth, Norm Chow). The guy has legit talent, but believe me, a lot of those USC guys are unhappy with playing time. They're h.s. studs, 5 *s, and you don't think they got people in their ears telling them they should be playing more? But, somehoe Carroll keeps them.

Another example: Mitch Mustain. Dropped to 4th string (!!!) earlier this year because of his practice performance (I think it was just to send a message). He went to Carroll's office and had a meeting. Carroll told him to learn the damn playbook and stop throwing picks in practice, and 2 weeks later, he was elevated to #2.

Again, guys are unhappy, and as people have listed, there have been transfers. But Carroll does a great job of keeping them at USC...

It could be because of playing time and depth chart issues, it could be from issues stemming from his legal battles, but it could also be about a girl back home in San Diego or some other seemingly "trivial" basis for his decision. He is a 20 year old kid. Who knows what is going through his mind? I am not sad to see him go because he obviously feels he is doing what is best for him. I wish him well. I hope he doesn't look back on this someday and feel like he make a mistake by leaving ND. God Bless Will. I hope you are a success no matter where you end up!

I feel bad for Yeatman. He endured a thing that many college freshmen have gone through. Only they were not an Irish football player. You gotta be aware of what you are doing (where you are) and the consequences. I do think that Rudolph may make us forget all about that. I think he is a stud in the making.
