Wilbon On Saban

just watched the segment on PTI that talked about Saban signing his extension at Alabama. Then Wilbon went off and said Saban might leave if and only if he went to Notre Dame.. doesn't make too much sense to me and the only evidence Wilbon came up with was "he's a devout Catholic" which, you know, a lot of people are but that doesn't make them an ND coaching candidate.. I don't think Saban would last 10 days at ND because, you know, you have to follow rules and regulations.. stupid comment by Wilbon

Have to agree with you. Saban is college footballs Satan. He didn't do much at MSU, where you probably could cheat, but in the SEC where the C stands for Cheats he blossomed.

If ND ever hired him I would cease to be a fan.

My take was this: if you watch the show regularly, Wilbon likes to needle Korheiser about ND. Korny likes ND, Wilbon doesn't. It was really more a comment to rile Kornheiser, more than an actual suggestion...

Has Saban ever been in trouble? If not, I would be pretty happy if he came to ND. He is pretty easily the best coach in the country, and a legitimate legend. Definitely not likable, but I don't give a damn how cuddly he is. The man is a beast, and is absolutely ruthless.

I might be myself here but if Nick Saban were to come to ND i would streak through the whole state of Wisconsin naked with Sabans head tattooed to my back. I wouldn't mind seeing a couple Natty Champs. If Kelly doesn't pan out i would want Gruden or Saban.

I would join you. There is simply no better coach in college football right now.

I'm with you, the man is heartless, ruthless, and by all accounts a horrible person but as far as college football coaches go; there's no one better.

Well i got 3 people in my wolf pack now just need 1 more.

I'll take Saban and he can do whatever he wants. If he does bend the rules he doesn't seem to get caught, so by all means. I'll join your wolfpack. I can't wait to go frolicking through the shamrock streets looking for strippers and cocaine.

Those of you who object to Saban would definitely change your mind after a National Championship.

What rules has Saban broken and/or how has he cheated?? The NCAA allows grey-shirting, oversigning, etc.(and if I'm not mistaken, I think Saban is actually pretty direct with some of the kids who may be grey-shirted, telling them this in the process). I'm not saying the guy is a shoe-in for beatification after he dies, but using a governing body's rules to your advantage doesn't mean one breaks rules or cheats. He excels at the standard set forth by him from his institution (Alabama). Who knows, perhaps if he were at ND, he would abide by the principles expected of him there too. Of course, in this hypothetical, I don't think he would ever take the ND job anyway.

Gruden was my 2nd choice behind Stoops for the job 2 years ago. Would love to have him if Kelly doesn't work out.

A lot of what Saban does is just extremely unethical, not necessarily against the rules.

There's no way he'd come to ND. He has a terrific gig at Bama. He has a contract extension that will make him richer than Croesus, and he can easily pull in Top 10 recruiting classes on an annual basis. Also, if BK is fired, ND will be in such shambles that we'd be trying to find a young up-and-comer, because no reputable coach would take the job.

Gruden wouldn't know how to recruit. He thinks every player is ridiculously underrated and immensely talented. He'd offer 1,000 kids per year.

I'll take unethical anyway, as long as it's within the rulebook. If it's viewed as 'unethical' but it's not against the rules, the people who label it that are probably just bitter they didn't think of it first.

You're allowed your opinion but I couldn't disagree with you more...

I'm sure you have an example that will make me re-think my statement (I'm being serious, not sarcastic), but if the coach is within the rulebook, it's the NCAA's job to adjust the rules, not the coaches job to follow what rules are in place and also the ones he believes are unethical.

Ethical issues like greyshirting aside, he puts together the most dominant teams in the country. Even if he wasn't able to greyshirt, he'd have the best teams in the country. And I'm sure Bama fans don't mind too much about their coach's ethical downfalls considering they're busy celebrating a second national championship in three years.
