Holy. Freaking. Crap.

Well, maybe it's just because yesterday was a federal holiday and no one had anything better to than sit at their computers and rumor-monger, but there are TONS of recruiting whispers out there. I repeat: TONS. Including some rather unbelievable news on ... well, you'll just have to read to the bottom to find out. Remember, though, you'd already know all of this stuff and more if you'd been following what was being said on the <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/" target="_blank">IrishEnvy boards</a>. But forthwith, a brief rundown of some of the highlights ...

<em>Off the Irish radar:</em>
<ul>
<li>California RB/DB <strong>Thaddeus Brown</strong>, a high school teammate of commits <strong>Dayne Crist</strong> and <strong>Anthony McDonald</strong>, was briefly on ND's radar as a potential recruit for the defensive secondary, but <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2008-recruiting-profiles/30345-08-ca-db-rb-thaddeus-brown.html#post211051" target="_blank">won't be getting an offer</a> because of academic issues.</li>
<li>California DE <strong>Datone Jones</strong>, currently a UCLA verbal, had a visit to ND scheduled for late January but has since <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2008-recruiting-profiles/21525-08-ca-de-datone-jones-official-offer-2.html#post211224" target="_blank">canceled it</a>, apparently because of academic issues once again.</li>
<li>No matter what they tell you, believe this: Texas RB <strong>Cyrus Gray</strong> <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2008-recruiting-profiles/20737-08-tx-rb-cyrus-gray-texas-m-verbal-4.html#post211641" target="_blank">is going to Texas A&M</a>.</li>
<li>Kansas WR/QB <strong>Chris Harper</strong> <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2008-recruiting-profiles/22586-08-ks-wr-ath-chris-harper-oregon-verbal-4.html#post211704" target="_blank">has verballed to Oregon</a>.</li>
<li>Missouri FB/ILB <strong>Will Compton</strong> was offered by the Irish, though as a fullback with a chance to play linebacker down the line. Apparently that's not what he was looking for, and so his scheduled official visit to ND <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2008-recruiting-profiles/22950-08-mo-fb-lb-will-compton-official-offer-3.html#post211679" target="_blank">has been canceled</a>. Last I heard he's <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2008-recruiting-profiles/22950-08-mo-fb-lb-will-compton-official-offer-3.html#post211662" target="_blank">announcing today</a>, between Nebraska, Missouri, and Illinois.</li>
</ul>
<em>On the Irish radar:</em>
<ul>
<li>Texas DE/OLB <strong>Kapron Lewis-Moore</strong> is rumored to have <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2008-recruiting-profiles/20051-08-tx-de-olb-kapron-lewis-moore-official-offer-2.html#post212211" target="_blank">decommitted</a> from Texas A&M, a decision that may very well have been mutual. He apparently <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2008-recruiting-profiles/20051-08-tx-de-olb-kapron-lewis-moore-official-offer-2.html#post212097" target="_blank">had an AWESOME time</a> on his official visit to Notre Dame, and <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2008-recruiting-profiles/20051-08-tx-de-olb-kapron-lewis-moore-official-offer-2.html#post212099" target="_blank">nearly gave his commitment on the spot</a>. Expect some good news on National Signing Day.</li>
<li>Michigan DT <strong>Mike Martin</strong> <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2008-recruiting-profiles/29987-08-mi-dt-mike-martin-michigan-verbal-2.html#post212265" target="_blank">will be taking an official visit to Notre Dame this coming weekend</a>. There have been <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2008-recruiting-profiles/29987-08-mi-dt-mike-martin-michigan-verbal-2.html#post212100" target="_blank">whispers</a> that he's solidly back on board with the Wolverines after a visit to Ann Arbor, so I wouldn't get my hopes up too high - but you never know, the kid might feel the magic.</li>
<li>California RB <strong>Milton Knox</strong>, currently a UCLA verbal, is apparently <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2008-recruiting-profiles/13150-08-ca-rb-milton-knox-jr-ucla-verbal-2.html#post212376" target="_blank">awaiting test results</a> that could earn him an ND offer. From what I recall, the longstanding sense among people who follow these things seems to have been that he'd probably accept it in a heartbeat.</li>
<li>The Irish may be showing some interest in Georgia DE/OLB <strong>Keith Wells</strong>, who has <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2008-recruiting-profiles/22874-08-ga-de-olb-keith-wells.html#post209159" target="_blank">withdrawn his verbal</a> to Florida State. He <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2008-recruiting-profiles/22874-08-ga-de-olb-keith-wells.html#post212266" target="_blank">may be visiting ND</a> later this month.</li>
<li>Finally, ND <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2008-recruiting-profiles/14887-08-sc-ol-kenneth-page-official-offer-3.html#post212474" target="_blank">looks to be in pretty good shape</a> with South Carolina OL <strong>Kenneth Page</strong>, who may have <a href="http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/2008-recruiting-profiles/14887-08-sc-ol-kenneth-page-official-offer-3.html#post212271" target="_blank">whittled down</a> his final two to the Irish and the Clemson Tigers.</li>
</ul>
<em>Well, not quite "finally" ...</em>
<ul>
<li>There are ... how shall I put it ... lots of crazy rumors flying around on the - yes, you are reading this correctly - <strong>Omar Hunter</strong> front, as ND's courtship of him (and his of ND) may not be entirely a thing of the past. I can't say more now, because much of this seems to be of the If I Told You I'd Have to Shoot You Fast Because My Source Would Be Coming to Shoot Me variety. Let's just say you should keep your ear to the ground to see if these rumblings turn into a genuine earthquake ... and remember, you heard it here first!</li>

South Bend Tribune: Irish eyeing 3 recruits

Article published Jan 23, 2008
Irish eyeing 3 recruits
S.C.’s Page to announce his decision Friday

By BOB WIENEKE

Tribune Staff Writer

Robin Bacon knew for sure that coaches from North Carolina and Notre Dame were scheduled for Wednesday night in-home visits with star offensive lineman Kenneth Page.

The head football coach at A.C. Flora High in Columbia, S.C., also knew that Clemson coach Tommy Bowden and Tennessee’s Phillip Fulmer had visited Page a day earlier.

But Bacon couldn’t remember the order of the Notre Dame and North Carolina visits.

“I don’t know who’s coming first. One’s coming early and one’s coming later,” Bacon said, before adding with a laugh, “That might be the best time to come in, the last one.”

Why? Because once Wednesday’s batch of visits was done, Page will spend today thinking about where he’ll spend the next four years of his life. He’s set to announce his choice from among the four finalists at a 9 a.m. Friday press conference.

That’s about the extent of the information Bacon had at his disposal on Wednesday, hours before the final stumping was to take place.

“Some kids have a gut feeling ... ‘Hey, this is where I want to go,’ and you know it,” Bacon said. “I don’t think he’s made his decision.”

The 6-foot-4, 293-pound Page is one of three players with whom Notre Dame remains involved, the others being Weatherford, Texas, defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore and Novi, Mich., defensive lineman Mike Martin.

Notre Dame has received 22 verbal commitments to its recruiting class of 2008. Until the Feb. 6 signing day arrives, Irish coach Charlie Weis is prohibited from commenting on a recruit.

Martin, according to CSTV and recruiting analyst Tom Lemming, who also writes a column for the Tribune publication Irish Sports Report, is scheduled to visit Notre Dame this weekend. Martin committed to Michigan over the summer, and visited there last weekend.

Lewis-Moore, who had committed to Texas A&M before Dennis Franchione was replaced by Mike Sherman, made his official visit to Notre Dame last weekend. There was scuttlebutt this week that the Aggies had pulled Lewis-Moore’s scholarship offer.

“I don’t think so,” said Kenny Wheaton, Lewis-Moore’s coach at Weatherford High. “That’s kind of a misunderstanding, all that Internet business.”

The 6-4, 225-pound Lewis-Moore still has one visit remaining — to Kansas — the weekend of Feb. 2. But other than that, information about any timeline on a decision remains up to Lewis-Moore.

“He enjoyed Notre Dame,” Wheaton said. “I’ll go that far, but other than that I really don’t want to say.”

Bacon on Wednesday could only say for sure when Page’s recruitment would end.

“I think it’s one of those things where he just feels like he’s get to end it,” Bacon said, “it’s been going on for so long.”

I think it is down to Wells and maybe a few lower ranked guys that may get late offers!!

Unless there is a particular "lower ranked diamond in the rough" that the Irish coaches perceive as worth taking a chance on, I too think the focus will be centered on Wells. One other name that I hear some noise on is the APB out of Texas ... Terrance Robinson. Anyone feel that he could be brought into the mix this late? Though small, being a 4-star w/ sub 4.4 speed is something to really consider. I would doubt that they will fill all open scholarships just to be filling them up! There's nothing wrong w/ having a couple open scholarship spots open for this year.

With the Chow hiring I do not see Knox leaving UCLA...I think it is down to Wells and maybe a few lower ranked guys that may get late offers!!

Don't get your hopes up. I would think that would be highly unlikely at this point. By the time they'd get their offer it'd only be a little more than a week untill NSD, and they'd only have one opportunity to visit and they would have to do so on short notice.

It's basically down to Knox if he gets his ACT scores back this week, and Wells if he does in fact decide to visit.
