Theres nothing going on today and I just noticed that Oklahoma just picked up the top WR in Jersey today so it leads me to this question since I can't start a poll. Who will take the top class this year? It's disgustingly early but I'd say...

1. Oklahoma http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=146&p=9&c=4&yr=2008
2. USC
3. Georgia
4. OSU
5. FSU


I see Oklahoma picking up A. Brown and Jon Major as well....I think ND will wind up in the 6-8 range.

Thats crazy. Oklahoma is cleaning up. Normally, I'd pick USC. I think ND can have a top 5 with a little more luck.

I'm going to go with:
1. OK
2. USC
3. OSU
4. UT
5. ND (if we can get a few guys left on our board, particularly Floyd, Blanton, Slaughter)
6. GA
7,8,9. FL/FSU/Miami (it could be any of them in any order there)

Has to be OK with the top class. Bob Stoops has been working very hard to get OK back to the elite.

We have a shot if we can land the 5* WR and Carlton Thomas...atleast top 5 but top 10 for sure. I think Georgia and OSU are contenders till the end. Can Urban steal a few last minute???

In no particular order, I think that Oklahoma, USC, Georgia, Notre Dame, Texas, Florida St., Miami, Florida, Ohio State, and one other SEC team will all be in the top ten at the end of the recruiting season. But, what order they'll be ranked by the recruiting services is anyone's guess at this point.

I say we end up at 6 or 7. Although we would need to get about 1/4 of the guys that we really want, and that is gonna be tough.

I think if nd can land some of their big time prospects on the offensive side of the ball they can have a top5 class

What about UCLA? They are definitely #1 right now, although admittedly some of their commits are a little shaky. Nonetheless, they already have 15 commits, 12 of which are Rivals 4 stars. If nothing else happened, they would probably end up as a Top 10 class. Another thing to keep in mind is that USC & Florida are going to have a more difficult time nabbing 5 stars at the end because so many are starting to commit early. This is why the Cockwad's recruiting theory this year may just blow up in his face, hopefully. Of course, he will get his fair share, but the only way he is likely to end up with the top class this year is by doing a lot of poaching at the end, something he is very good at, but this time around he going to need to steal more than 2 or 3, and his rep may be starting to catch up with him because of his refusal to accept early commits from his now 140+ offers.

ND can not end up at #1, because the Irish are really not in contention for a lot of 5 stars, but if they can finish up this class with Filer, Floyd, Blanton, Slaughter, McCarthy, Forst or Page, and Johnson, they would almost certainly end up as a Top 5 class. Throw Marcus Forston & Ryan Williams into that mix, and they could be Top 3.

-----------IUB I'd have to disagree with UCLA being #1 right now. I think they'll have decommitments and still have a top 10 class, but have you seen OU's class? It's just nuts for this early. Also, if he nabbed all the above guys mentioned that is a gaurenteed top 3 maybe top 2.

The Rivals formula for team rankings is based on the stars and the ratings within the stars. Volume of recruits also affects your team ranking. Right now, UCLA with 12 4 stars, and 3 3 stars, would be higher ranked than OU with 3 5 stars, 5 4 stars, and 4 3 stars. It's not relevant this early, possibly never is, but if they were to publish right now UCLA would be ahead of OU, it actually wouldn't be even that close. I do agree with you that by the end though OU has a good shot at the top spot, with some of the guys they are in serious contention with. UCLA has pretty much shot its' load, and it may in fact be getting some blue balls before its' all over.

I'd say ND ends up 6 or 7. Which is good considering some guys in the top 5 classes will probably not ever qualify.

That would make three straight top 10 classes. I've said this over and over in the past, but Texas's title team wasn't made up of a bunch of top 5 classes, it was one #1 class, another top 10 class and a couple classes in the teens.

The keys are getting consistent good classes, getting the guys that not only fit, but maximize your schemes, filling your holes, coaching them up and hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.

Recruiting class rankings matter if you're talking top 5 versus top 30, or so. But the top classes are all so close together, it's not that important.

Now before anybody throws USC's string of recruiting at me, don't forget that for all the crap we give them, they have an excellent coaching staff and their rise to the top began their recruiting success as much as the other way around.
