The best quarterback prospect committing to Notre Dame would be a bad move?

LoL...some people are comical... you know what...let's stop pursuing K. Marshall and N. Agholor. We have Cierre, Cam, GAIII, DD etc etc...

Why are Alabama, LSU, Okla always in BSC title game contention? They reload every year. Bring the best in and let the rest sort itself out.

Asinine.

I would never want to pass up on a 5 star recruit, I just don't want the fans to want him to start from day one. Or I would hate to see the coaching staff go straight to him because they think he will be great.

The last time ND was actually relevant in the national spotlight was 1993. The QB that was suppose to start was Ron Powlus a top recruit, everyone thought he was going to be great and the next Heisman winner for ND. Instead he gets hurt, Kevin McDougal steps in takes the team to a a one loss season and should have been National Champs.

Powlus steps in the year after and the rest is history.

By no means at all am I comparing the two, Powlus and Gunner, when it comes to potential. Just the fact that he should not be given the starting role, without really earning it.

Again I would love for him to commit.

Letting Gunner verbal would be the opposite of a good move. Go back and watch Golson's tape. Oh, and he knows what it is like to win.

I am thinking the next guy to come would be Odenigbo, which is who I previously thought as well.

If Golson is the better quarterback, he would win the job anyway. Why would you not want to try and get the best value out of the position? Take Gunner and let the best man win between Rees, Hendrix, Golson, and Kiel next fall.

If Golson's the best quarterback, he'll play. If he's not, he won't.

EDIT: Beaten to it.

Bring in the best and let them win the job. Like GAII winning that kickoff returner. Or TJ winning that WR spot last year. Or Teo etc.

I am a Hendrix fan, but would love Gunner coming in here and competing for a job.

Bring in the best and let them fight it out! Say what you want about Dayne he came here after the All Everyting Claussen was here, and Jimmy won. Gotta give Dayne some credit coming in after a stud like Jimmy signed.

The 2013 quarterbacks are better than Kiel.

We have both Hendrix and Golson, why waste another scholarship on QB in this recruiting cycle? Might as well go offer 7 punters.

Which 2013 QB that we have a shot at is better than him? Alviti? No. Browne? No. Swoopes and Shane Morris are close but we wont get them.

Alviti isn't better? Go watch him throw the ball off of a QB bootleg, or his decision-making off the zone read, his speed and willingness to run ahead and make a block on a play, him planting his foot in the pocket to make a deep strike. I would rather have him. The other couple you mentioned aren't bad either. I did see Shane Morris perform in 7-vs-7 over the summer and wasn't that impressed with him. I haven't watched all of his tape, to be fair.

He's the number 1 QB in the country for a reason. He is the complete package of size, athleticism, accuracy, and arm strength. You do NOT pass this kid up

Tell Maurice Jones-Drew about size. If you can play, then you can play.

I am not saying that Kiel isn't good--because he is. I am saying that spending a scholarship on him this year is foolhardy. Also, I would much rather pick one of the 2013 QBs.

I expected a Drew Brees or Doug Flutie reference maybe, but Jones-Drew?? hahaha

Here's some food for thought: why not take a stud quarterback EVERY YEAR?

Getting Kiel now doesn't mean Kelly can't get the best guy next year too.

You never, ever, turn down the #1 guy at his position nationally (unless he has a criminal record or can't read).

The coaching staff is obviously selective enough to turn down a 5-star DL because of the "needs", according to rumors. Why not a #1 QB? We need other positions.

Day was valued higher and we knew we were getting Jarron Jones. He is everyone's number 1 QB with the possible exception of Jameis Winston but he needs to work on his accuracy. Kelly invited him out here to watch ND vs USC for FREE. He definitely values him highly.

Not everyone at the game is boarding the train. Kelly knows this, but it is more than just the few that will get aboard. The atmosphere of that many people excited to see ND was the key. It was about numbers.

We turned down Schutt because we had already addressed the position by getting commitments from two other highly rated defensive linemen. What you're suggesting is ignoring an area of need all together.

I'm sure Alviti would be great at executing all 0 of the bootleg plays in our playbook.

I like Alviti, but this is silly season. There's not one thing he can do physically that Gunner can not. You're going to find very few serious people that would take him over Kiel.

You're also missing the simple fact that if you miss on a guy in 2012, you can at least pursue 2013 options afterwards. If you ignore a guy in 2012 and miss on your guy in 2013, you've left yourself with no recourse.

The point is he has the timing down and the ability to throw the ball on the run, after turning his body and head around. Hell, if you can do something well enough then plays can be scripted to your skill set.

85% of Gunner's highlight film is of him making difficult throws into space on the run.

I just think you've backed yourself into a corner and don't want to be a man and say your sorry to Mr. Kiel.

It's okay, he doesn't bite. But he throws a wicked football.
