Maurice Stovall
Vitals: 6'4", 217, 4.58
Position: Wide Receiver

Statistics
Career Totals Receiving Rushing
SEASON REC YDS AVG TD ATT YDS AVG TD
2005 69 1149 16.7 11 2 1 0.5 0
2004 21 313 14.9 1 0 0 0.0 0
2003 22 421 19.1 3 0 0 0.0 0

Overall: Stovall played in all 13 games as a reserve receiver during his true freshman season. He started three of the 12 games that he played as a sophomore in 2003, finishing third on the team with 23 receptions. He only played in nine of 12 games in 2004 and finished with 22 receptions for 313 yards and one TD. However, Stovall experienced a breakout season as a senior in 2005, when he finished with 69 receptions for 1,149 yards and 11 TDs in 2005..Stovall was a career underachiever prior to his senior season in 2005, when he flourished in coach Charlie Weis' offensive scheme. Stovall still has room to improve in terms of his recognition skills and route running, but he has made great strides in those areas. Stovall has a terrific combination of size, speed and athletic ability. He shows the potential to develop into a matchup nightmare.

I'd lay more $vo bucks on the second round but I'm afraid the Steelers may take him at 32. Steelers are looking wide out and I don't think Sinorice Moss is there kind of player.

Round & Team

Round & Team

Its nearly impossible to determine who Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli will draft in the FIRST round, never mind any other. However, I believe, if he is available, the New England Patriots will draft Maurice Stovall in Round 2. I also feel that they will choose G Dan Stevenson in Round 6 [the Brady round] or 7. Furthermore, Notre Dame [Charlie Weis] will now replace LSU [Nick Saban] as the new "college pipeline" to the pros.

Troy Brown, New England Patriots [after Coach Weis's selection as head coach] "If you want to win, go to Notre Dame."

Hedging My Bets

Hedging My Bets

I preface my comments by saying, NO ONE has any inside information on what is going on in Foxborough! Belichick and Pioli lock the door to the bunker and don't come out until Saturday. NO ONE ever predicts who they will draft either. What I can say is that they draft the best player available on THEIR board and they place a great deal of stock in character, as well as value. That's why the often draft players from schools coached by former members of Belichick's staffs - Pat Hill, Kirk Ferentz, Nick Saban [formerly] and Charlie Weis [presently]. Some examples of their recent draft history: The trendy pick was WR David Terrell from UM; the Patriots selected DE/DT Richard Seymour from Georgia. Last year, NO ONE had them selecting OG Logan Mankin from Fresno State; yet he started every game [Some draftniks had him going in the second or third round]. The Patriots have 11 choices this year, more than any other team. They don't need 11 new players, so you can expect that they will trade - up or down - for a player. They still are far under the salary cap and will remain so even after re-signing WR Deon Branch soon. They are also expected to be "big players" on June 1st, when many of the teams who did not exhibit their fiscal responsibility with the new cap and will have to cut veterans. Finally, I heard this morning that they are one of the "suitors" for WR Javon Walker, who wants out of Green Bay and will be granted his wish by the Packers. Either a trade or a later free agent signing could significantly change their needs.
Presently, however, the depth chart at wide receiver is thin. So, I'll stick with my pick of Maurice Stovall to the Patriots in Round 2 because:

1. They need a tall receiver to replace [ironically] David Givens opposite the speed, diminutive Deon Branch.
2. Like Givens, he is a possession receiver who "uses his size to his advantage to make the tough catches in traffic. Impressive body control and agility at his size. High points the jump ball. A good downfield blocker. Has the ability to dominate in the red zone." [Patriots Football Weekly scouting report].
3. He has an upside in that he really came on strong in his senior season. "Excelled at the Senior Bowl."
4. Charlie Weis's offense at Notre Dame is the New England Patriots offense. So, he is already familiar with the system - practice schedule, terms and schemes.
5. The Patriots targeted Maurice Stovall during the 2006 Scouting Combine [Local article was headlined: "ND players would be Weis choices"] on February
24th.
6. Coach Belichick relies on trusted evaluations from college coaches that he has ties with. After Maurice Stovall accepted his challenge in the spring [Get in shape, lose weight and get faster], I would assume he would come highly recommended.
Whatever team he ends up playing for, one thing is for sure. He is has certainly been well prepared to deal with the trials and tribulations of the NFL, both on and off the field, from having played under Coach Weis at Notre Dame. :whoknows:

Hi Indy Domer:

Retirement gives me a little more free time than most. When you get to be my age, its a great day when you get up out of the bed in the morning! My two favorite sports subjects are Notre Dame football and New England Patriots football. When a topic comes up that covers both, I can easily get carried away  .
