Notre Dame Football - What We Learned: Offensive Line

by Christian McCollum
4/30

No offensive position was harder to get a firm grasp on this spring than Notre Dame’s offensive line, but after some shuffling, reshuffling and more shuffling, the picture finally started to come into focus
“We're not there yet, but we're moving in a position where we think we've got eight to ten guys that we know can play winning football,” Brian Kelly said following the spring game. “What we want is five guys that can play championship football.”
...

LT Zach Martin
LG Chris Stewart
C Braxston Cave or Dan Wenger or Chris Watt or Mike Golic
RG Trevor Robinson
RT (my other left) Taylor Dever

Center is my single biggest position of concern on this team. (Not including health reasons, of course.)

2 Left Tackles! Sweep left! Seriously, was Romine was overrated? I thought he should have cracked the lineup by now!

Maybe it was a Freudian slip. Romine filled in some at TE when Rudolph was out with the injury. I didn't expect him to catch passes but I thought he would be an effective blocker. He wasn't. As LT he has to deal with the DE going to outside or slipping inside. As a TE he's outside the DE but got beaten badly, physically.

I was stunned. Before I saw those plays I had expected Romine to be the '10 starting LT. After those plays I expected ND's record in '10 to be worse than '09. I though the OLine had a fatal hole at LT. I then thought Robinson or even Stewart would be moved over there to eliminate a turnstile waving at rushing DE's. I didn't give Dever a thought.

Wenger also played disappointingly, particularly at center. I was hoping it was Latina's instruction/scheme that was the problem. Apparently not.

Warinner has done a lot of reshuffling looking for the right combinations and apparently he's not afraid to play the younger guys. I liked the OLines play in the B&G game but recognize the big holes and all those rushing yards came against a ragtag DLine. We didn't play #1 against #1 in the B&G game so we'll have to wait until September to see just how well they perform.

I think it was Mike Frank who commented on Cave's limitations at center and noted that Warinner had other options although untested.

Next to Crist's knee, the OLine remains the biggest question mark on this team. Fans raise concern about the Defense being on the field too long with Kelly's hurry up offense. Think how long they Defense will be on the field if Crist's knee doesn't hold up or the OLine is a porous as the past 3 seasons.

This season will probably have us all holding our breath until the first kickoff. There are quite a few holes/concerns. Were I do have faith is in the coaching staff though. They somehow turned a defense that had lost 10 starters and made it a better defense then we had here. They turned a qb into an olb and went on to an undefeated season. There's obvious holes along the line but we are effectivley recruiting those areas and I believe we will fid the right combo to keep us in games and give us a winnig record. I'm not expecting a bcs bowl game this year but even if we only get a smaller bowl game that will be very important in the fact that it willxallow us to have another few weeks of practice at the very least. We have changed our entire system on offense and defense so I'll wait and see what happens but continually trust in the future.

I have faith that coach Warriner will be able to figure it out and put the best 5 on the field. when he was at Kansas, he had the state of Kansas' Mr. football 5 star recruit, and started the 5-9 Todd Reesing over him cause Reesing gave them the best chance to win.

Think about how much potential this staff has over the old one...ND has a Orange bowl winning OC as our o-line coach!

This staff seems to be a better group. What I mean by that is thy they all know what they wan and expect out of each other and have bought into the same plan and vision. One team one dream.
