We won!

Ok, here's my positive today. The offensive line did not make one penalty today, and not stupid late hits. It was a pretty clean game. Oh ya, NO TURNOVERS.

If we are this ticked off after winning two in a row, imagine how ticked off we are all going to be after we win 7 in a row going into SC. :)

I sure hope so. I'm afraid if our defense keeps playing like this, and all indications are they will, we might get bit by UCLA, or our offense has an off day. I hope not, but defense can get you by even when you have an off day. Hope not, but I'm a little worried.

yeah we won. But we wont win a bowl game with that defense.

Im with you.

The scheme of this defense has to be changed, I dont buy that we dont have the defensive talent. I have been pleasantly surprised by the play of many individuals this season. Its not the players, its the defensive play calling.

How many times today did we see all 11 defensive players playing within 10 yards of the line of scrimage? Too many. Hmmm.... they were making a couple big pass receptions against us, I wonder if the fact that Zibby was only playing 7 yards deep had anything to do with that (there is a reason he is called a safety). I dont think the defense play calling is putting our guys in the correct position to stop these big pass gains, and that is why we will struggle against the OSUs, UMs, and USCs.
Dont forget we missed ALOT of tackles today.

I think its time to put our talented freshman in. Put zbikowski at LB and put the defensive calling in someone elses hands. Minter absolutely sucks.

Enjoy yourselves. Good grief.

Just for the record...I did.

I was irritated that we were giving up big plays...BUT I never once worried. We were in control the whole time.

So much so, that I was able to watch my kids the ENTIRE game while my wife went out to lunch with someone. AND I DID NOT LOSE EITHER ONE OF THE KIDS!!!

You didn't happen to see either of mine, did you?

How can I say this?

I never thought ND wasn't in control of the game, yet I still felt...uneasy....for most of the time the game was being played.

If that makes sense.

We? Oh c'mon

Yes We. Yes. I know. You didn't play. I didn't play. Blah blah blah. It's easier than typing. "That team that we all cheer for and write about on this internet message board"

Save the semantics. "We" wasn't the point of this thread.

I did. I'm pretty content about where the team is right now. Give credit to Purdue for having maybe the best offense we've played so far.

Charile and the coaches now have 6 weeks to get a few more of the physically talented freshmen on the field. Even so, realistically, they're going to be big underdogs against USC and in the bowl game. No 'Fire Minter' petitions are going to change that.

Regarding the DL, I thought they played very well against probably the best OL that we've seen so far. Zibby has been off the past couple of weeks, but he'll bounce back. We really need the linebackers to improve, but I think that they will as they gain experience.

Overall, feeling good about our team. Go Irish! Beat Stanford!

To get out of September with one loss when they could have had three or maybe even four, I'd say that's damn good.

And that loss came to a team that could play for a National Championship.

Yeah, we all bought the hype and expected to breeze through this season, obviously forgetting that last year's holes returned. The Irish should win every game until going to LA (though UCLA could give us a scare.) From what I've seen of USC, they are beatable but it will take an effort like last year's USC game.

10-2 would not be a bad year. 11-1 would be outstanding. This year is not over, or a waste. The personnel is on the way. But it's going to take a couple years to load up.

SO JUMP NOW!

Bowl games are 13 weeks away. There's a lot of football to be played between now and then.

ND hasn't won a bowl game under Holtz, Davie, Willingham, or Weis so when did you get entitled to a win?

The volume of pissing and moaning from fans of a 4-1 team is deplorable. It's worthy of Miami fans.

How many of you hand wringers picked ND to go 5-0?

Fess up!

Not even you GoldenDomer predicted 5 turnovers in one game, did you?

I went back last night and read a bunch of preseason threads. There were concerns about the OLine and lack of depth at RB. The concerns about the defense were lengthy. CFN ranked the ND defense 40th. They pointed out the concern over the porous secondary returning and noted there were two LBs to replace. They were clueless as to who would replace them.

There were complaints from ND fans that the #40 ranking was too low AND was too high! A couple of us noted that considering the proficiency of the Offense if we got to the numbers of the 40th ranked teams on last years NCAA defensive rankings we've been doing very well.

Well the NCAA Offensive rankings are down some and the defensive numbers haven't improved much - so far. ND's played 5 unbeaten teams in 5 weeks. Has anybody else?

ND's played the #1 toughest schedule in the nation for a couple of weeks now.

And we're 4-1.

To read many of the current posts on this board you'd think ND was 0-5. One poster declared "SEASON OVER" when MSU went up 7-0. "There's no agressiveness!" Funny I recall Wooden getting injured demolishing an opponent. I can recall similar hits by Ndukwe, Zib, Ferrine, Crum, Laws, Landri, and several others. We've sure got a bunch of banged up guys for people who don't hit.

The OLine starts a true freshman who several of you anointed an Outland Trophy winnner before his first game. It was apparent that the RG missed blocks of his own while worrying about the new guy. It was apparent the Carlson was being put in motion to assist in blocking on the new guys side. It should have also been apparent that Harris missed preseason practice and still isn't up to last season game performance. Harris got beaten repeatedly against PU. Have you noticed that Duncan is rotating with Young at RT? He's 19 playing against guys 3 years older that can lift probably 150 pounds more than can and are showing him speed and moves he's never seen before. In November he won't get beat as often as he does now and he won't need to be helped out as often as he does now. But right now he does.

"Start The Freshman!" Who cares if they know the plays or have the strength to deal with Div 1, 21 and 22 years old. They must be better than who we've got. Well you got to see Walls play. He might win 3 Jim Thorpe awards before he's done in college but if he plays like he didn't Saturday after two months in a gold helmet, I'll take Richardson all game long. Now you know why freshman don't start.

Yes it makes perfect sense. But if one play in the entire game was different this board would have had a lot less posts. If Walls deflects, intercepts, or tackles Lymon, or Zibby knocks loss the ball or knocks Lymon down, no late 1st half score.

As it was, despite the "game changing play", despite that momemtum shifter ND STUFFS PU on the opening second half drive, and ANSWERS the score.

And what do ND fans do. Lament.

Under Davie or Wilingham, PU would have scored on their first second half drive and the rout would have been on.

This team took adversity for the second week in a row and turned it around. They pulled the dagger out of their body (self inflicted or not) and plunged it back in the other guy!

Check John L's post game (Illinois) comments. A week later he's still focused on ND.

So is Tiller.

CHEER, CHEER FOR OLD NOTRE DAME!

HUGE. I recall when Weis was giving his halftime interview thinking to myself, they have the ball to start the second half.

I think Purdue knew they needed points on that drive and when they didn't get them, they were deflated.

Some things to point out:

-Six Purdue pass completions totaled 238 yards (88, 39, 23, 26, 40 and 22 yards)

-Purdue scoring drives were 86, 88 and 87 yards.

- ND defense had two 3 and out drives

-There were four defensive penalties= three pass interference calls and an offside call on Victor Abiamiri that Weis said he turned in for review. I thought two of the interference calls were questionable (Lambert and Ferrine).

- Purdue was 4 of 11 on third-down conversions and 0 of 3 on fourth down.

I'll have to go back and watch the replay on NBCsports.com (check this out, guys, if you haven't already)

There were some blatant missed tackles on a few of those long completions. It's quite telling what a few simple breakdowns in technique and execution can do. The defense has to tackle better.

The first man usually always misses. That can't happen.

I thought Lambert and Ferrine made pretty good plays when they were flagged.
