This is the first spring that I have followed recruiting to any degree. I was wondering if we got this many early commits last year. Seems like the coaches came out of the gate really fast.

No, normally ND can't extend as many early offers as other schools because of their more restrictive academic requirements. Therefore it creates a smaller pool of recruits that could commit early, which usually gives ND a lesser amount of early commitments. It just so happens that CW and the rest of the current coaching staff are learning from prior mistakes and have changed their recruiting tactics, plus they are more willing to work with the admissions department at ND, and put more man hours and effort in than the previous staff.

You're so right. It does look like the recruiting policy is changing for the better. With the academics being so tough, The Mad Scientist had to adapt.

Hope all is well Onenybrother. I luved the mad scientist reference! I'm glad CW is adapting, it shows that my thoughts on how his new recruiting philosophy was wrong. It could turn out to be the best thing ever for ND, especially with CB being there. Go Irish!

I think too that Charlie is building relationships w/ highschool programs, and rebuilding ND's reputation too. With 9 years of mediocrity, 3 of those years with lackadaisical recruiting, he had to do more than just win games; he had to spend a lot of time the first couple of years reintroducing ND to coaches and young players.

I think going into last years spring game we had 2 or 3 commits, so we are way ahead of the game this year.

We had 2 going into the spring game and then Jimmy was number 3 that morning. Recruiting has changes when most recruits would wait until their football season would be over to go on visits and then commit.

We had 2 recruits at this time, JC came on 4-22-06, and we didn't get our 7th recruit until until June 29, 06. We are definately ahead of the game.

Chuck Wagon has decided that enough is enough, ND sat in limbo for 10 years after Lou left, and it's high time the ND takes the fight to the other schools ref recruiting. It's great that CW is a coach that really understands what ND is all about....Ty and Bob never got it...

Its a series of ups and downs. You'll feel great about the recruiting one day and pissed the next day. You just have to hang in there and let it all play out. Its a lot of fun, but the twists and turns can drive you crazy. I am pretty confident that Charlie and Company will bring in some pretty great classes.

Crist is suppose to announce this Thurs evening (10:30 EST, I believe). Hopefully he gets the ball rolling for us this weekend.
