This has probably been discussed here a lot, but after remarks from Kelly on the issue I'd thought I'd post about it.
You guys think it would be a good idea to switch to Turf?

this is the article that quotes Kelly
Saturday May Be Last Irish Game with Natural Grass at Notre Dame Stadium | Bleacher Report

I kinda think, why not? It surely could not make things worse. It could even be a mental boost, if nothing else, for the players and make em feel like their getting an upgrade.

Absolutely.

I cannot count how many times somebody has slipped on our grass, particularly Allen. Not to mention every time somebody plants his foot an enormous clump of sod gets torn from the field.

I liked it when I played in high school, but I did think it was weird playing on what is essentially tire rubber.

I know a lot of people including myself like the traditions of ND but I don't think installing new turf is really that big of a deal. If it can possibly help us then I say do it.

I know some of you will disagree with me, but let me say something. Lou Holtz had no problems with grass on the field and he won about 100 games in 10 years before he left. Ty Willingham's team won 8 straight games before they lost to Boston College in 2002 and they played on grass so it wasn't an issue. Charie Weis won 19 games in 2005 and 2006 so same thing again -- the field is grass. The problem with Notre Dame is they don't know how to keep it winning. Once they identify on how to win games and great defense, they should win without any problems.

I don't want to hear that Kelly wants turf on the field, because it benefits his system. Notre Dame fell flat to Navy. Poor execution and poor decision when making plays on the field. They lost to Tulsa which they should have won if they choose the field goal instead of throwing in the end zone.

Kelly has to work hard to earn our approval of changing from grass to turf. You just can't expect someone who arrives on his/her first day of work then demand major changes that benefits the employee and it may benefit the employer. Kelly has to prove himself first. Florida Gators won two national championship in 2006 and 2008. They have grass. The bottom line is we need more talents on defensive and keep winning.

I found that I got tons of rubber pellets in my shoes, facemask, jersey... pretty much every where. Besides that, it's kind of cool to play on.

I did too, but it didn't bother me since I grew up in the country on a dirt road. At least the rubber didn't cut my feet.

Did you feel that way about Kelly implementing a training table?

How about overhauling the strength & conditioning program?

How about changing the ball the Irish use?

How about changing the jerseys?

Obviously you didn't read the article uh? Cause well, hopefully you wouldn't have still posted that. Even if you didn't read the article,
I can't believe you would write that.
Do you really think that if it made the difference between beating Navy'Tulsa and losing to them that we'd still have grass?!
Obviously its not going to make the difference between winning and losing :)facepalm...I can believe I have to write that *sigh*).
But it could make them a bit faster and improve their speed. No harm in that.

Yeah, when I play soccer on turf, those pellets can pretty annoying but it defo makes you faster.

ps WHOOOO for the TD to Kamarra!!!

I don't mean to make it sound like I am pissed or trying to shoot down the idea of having turf at Notre Dame. I like grass myself, because it's natural. That's just me. I watch Notre Dame football since 1991. I hope they won't change it. Changing from grass to turf won't be cheap. It's very expensive. If Notre Dame decides to go with turf then I hope the turf will look good.

I support Kelly for overhauling the strength and conditioning program if it's going to help the program. I have no opinion on the ball the Irish use and changing the jerseys, because it's never been discussed about that. I like their jerseys. Do you want to see turf or grass at Notre Dame?

FieldTurf is completely artificial I do believe.

The most popular hybrid company right now is Desso GrassMaster which is what the Packers use, as well as a couple other NFL teams.

This particular hybird stuff has 3% artificial fibers sewn into the real grass to give it better stability. I've heard good things about it.

I like the natural turf because it gives us a "home field advantage" Once ND develops to the point where we are kicking a$$es at home with regularity (that day is coming too) eventually some coach or Heisman candidate running back, or whomever is going to cry about the $hitty turf making him slip...yada, yada, yada. That will act as a catalyst and soon the thoroughly beaten visitors will cry tears in public and private about the $hitty grass at Notre Dame. They will come to Notre Dame with a little voice in their head saying "Don't cut too sharp or you will slip" etc. The grass will make them just a bit more tentative and when they lose it all becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.

I remember when the scuttle-butt about ND's turf was that Holtz intervened to keep it long and how that pissed off our opponents.

Turf is great (not the knee wrecker that the old carpets were) but grass can be a very effective psychological weapon when one team knows the field and the other doesn't.

Gotcha its cool mate. Just when you say things like switching to grass won't make them win is just kinda a dumb thing to say ;).
But yeah, each to his own opinion!
