You will NOT believe what the last assignment of the semester is for my Music Appreciation class :)

"The last project: Due date is either Monday or Tuesday depending on your class session, April 20 or 21. The project is: Select your two most favorite rock and roll selections and compare and contrast them. This is to be typed out and read, repeat, read in class. I am not interested in extemporaneous speech. The rock compositions can be from the 50's through the present. Consider text, tempo, style, era, and any additional contrast/compare musical issues you can provide."

HELLO BUDDY HOLLY!

I need help - which do you think I should do?

Also...write it for me? Please? *bats the eyelashes*

I don't know if I'd have the balls to get up in front of people and talk about FOTC...

Now Buddy Holly I could do because...

Well now wait...I don't have the balls to get up in front of people and talk about ANYTHING...

so I guess I could do either :)

I think it just says a lot that you have balls... how about "I've got big balls" by ACDC?

NO HOFF GRIN! NO HOFF GRIN!

It's just supposed to be short and sweet, and I've gotta orally present it to the class (heh. heh. ORAL), so I don't want it to be too "out there".

Just mostly the difference between the music ITSELF.

I'm thinking two different types of Buddy songs? TLW and Rave On or something like that?

OOH! Dearest! That's a FREAKING good one.

Dearest and maybe one of his more "fun" songs like "Listen to me" or "Peggy Sue Got Married" Lots to contrast there.

Awesome - now...what, other than text, tempo and style are different? LOL. And I can't help but think that he's trying to get me to contrast two different types. Maybe I should do Buddy Holly AND FOTC. Maybe... "Dearest" up against "Too Many Dicks On The Dancefloor"? LOL

If it must be Buddy Holly (who I already told you i LOVE and who is beyond underrated as a musician...would be known as one of the best of all-time if he didn't die IMO), then why not go in an opposite direction and compare him to a Black artist such as Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Chuck Berry, Smokey Robinson, etc. Buddy Holly obviously was very different from them, but also had similarities as well. Dude had soul and was a helluva lyricist ("Crying, Waiting, Hoping" is one of my favorite all-time songs).

People complain that the 50's and early 60's music was all bubble-gum lyrics, but some of those guys could really write. Smokey's "Ooooh, Baby Baby" and Brian Wilson's "Wouldn't It Be Nice" come to mind as sons that we think are bubble-gum ballads, but have some wickedly deep lyrics in them. You could do some fun things with it. Alright, I'm rambling, but good luck!

idk...mood....key.....

it probably would be easier if you did a major contrast of artists instead of songs by one artist as you mentioned above... but overall its whatever you are going to feel more comfortable with and what you think makes the better presentation...the fotc thing would catch some laughs though which is never a bad thing...

That's a good idea! :) But it's about 1 am, and I've gotta be up in 5 hours for work. So what I'm still doing on here is a mystery.

I would compare and contrast Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt.

There is absolutely no way you can talk about these two individuals and it not be an interesting presentation.

In my opinion the 3 best songwriters ever in no particular order would be Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, and Leonard Cohen.

Seriously, Compare and Contrast-- "Let it Be" by the Beatles to "Imagine" by John Lennon

EASY A and very interesting subject matter

you can compare the music style and the obvious beatles link then contrast the VERY different social statements made by either song and how drugs made Paul a laid back, "everything will work out fine" person while Drug's eroded John's mind and he became a "Burn the whole fucker down!!" type person

lol

for the sake of comparison, try LeD ZePpLiN's 'Stairway to Heaven' to Metallica's 'One'. Both songs are monster hits for genre-defining bands. Both songs have an extreme contrast in style, tempo, composition.

You can contrast musicianship too, everyone in LeD ZePpeLiN was a phenominal musician. Metallica is mainly composed of a songwriter (Hetfiled) and an arranger (Ulrich).

Lots of good comparisons to those 2 bands. But in the end no band comapres to LeD ZePpeLiN, they played rock, country, folk, latin influence music, poprock, every type of music out there and was successful in every genre. Zep was the first mega-band, the first band to have their own 747 plane, etc, etc, etc.

Metallica just plays heavy rock. LeD ZeP was far more of a dynamic band

we can work it out is a great example....

pauls verses are very cheery and optimistic whereas you can def tell john wrote the pessimistic middle eight

paul=try to see it my way.....

john=life is very short and theres no time...

anyway...good point acamp
