Wolverines hoping QB trio will give offense added depth | Freep.com | Detroit Free Press

by Mark Snyder Freep

Michigan quarterbacks coach Rod Smith is not sure who will be the starter after training camp. But he has a good feel for the competitors.
The three most likely options -- returning veteran Nick Sheridan and true freshmen Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson -- bring a different set of skills to the competition.
"Ultimately, you want what's best for us," Smith said. "If it's one guy, so be it. If it's two guys, so be it. We want to be able to give our guys the best situation to win. We'll be in a lot better situation than we were last year. Because, let's face it, we weren't very good last year. We have to be better."
Sheridan is the upperclassman who started last season's opener and filled in whenever Steven Threet (now transferred) was repeatedly injured. Sheridan had a highlight game at Minnesota, but was inconsistent overall. He missed the last few weeks of spring practice with a leg fracture.
"(The injury) is not a big deal -- it limited him for spring," Smith said. "Obviously you could use the reps, but he's to the point where he understands what we're doing now. He took a lot of mental reps, and he'll catch up real quick."
Forcier enrolled in January to get a head start. He teased with his accuracy and elusiveness in the spring.
"I was pleased with his progress, (but) he's got a lot more to go," Smith said. "He puts in the extra time. I see him as much as anybody around doing extra, because he needs to."
Robinson didn't arrive in Ann Arbor until June, but spent his spring at home in Florida ripping off stunning track sprint times, reportedly running 100 meters in 10.28 seconds.

Robinson is going to need those 10.28 100m times if he wants to survive.

Yeah, he is definetly gonna need that speed, especially after he watches Tater Salad get mauled by our defense.

Regardless... I want to see whoever starts torn in twain.

Like Stams did to Rodney Peete

Give All On Every Play - 12.05.88 - SI Vault

When Notre Dame got its measles and flu shots last week before leaving for Los Angeles to face Southern Cal and its talented, if recently contagious (with measles) quarterback, Rodney Peete, Irish defensive end—linebacker Frank Stams was itching to get an inoculation. Stams wanted the shot, he explained, because he planned to be in Peete's face all afternoon at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.
On Saturday, Stams, a 6'4", 237-pound fifth-year senior, made good on his threat. Among his game-high nine tackles (Southern Cal linebacker Scott Ross also had nine) were two solo sacks and an assist on another. On the first of those sacks, which came at the very end of the second quarter, Peete ended up with a bruised left shoulder. Then, in the fourth quarter, as Peete frantically searched for an open receiver, Stams caught him from the left side, and Irish tackle George Williams finished him off from the front. Five minutes later Stams bounced off a block by Trojan fullback Leroy Holt to sack Peete once again as he tried to break out of the pocket.
But the most resounding lick that Stams laid on Peete wasn't a sack or a tackle. With less than a minute left in the first half, cornerback Stan Smagala intercepted a USC pass. As Smagala raced down the sideline, Peete started toward him. Just as Peete began to pick up speed, Stams flattened him with a blind-side block that he must have learned to throw during his days as Notre Dame's starting fullback three years ago.
The blow knocked the wind out of Peete, who didn't get up for more than a minute. "I didn't go looking for him," said Stams, who also recovered a fumble to set up a touchdown. "I picked up the next opposite-colored jersey, and it just so happened to be Rodney Peete's. He was the last guy who could make the tackle or force the runner inside toward the pursuit."

I hope Forcier is the starter. Robinson may not be quite the passer, but 10.3 100 M speed is not something I want to go against especially when the guy in question has the ball in his hands every play. Regardless i'm still not sure they are going to be able to hold us under 35-40 points. Their defense doesn't look very impressive.
