REPORT: The Right Wing Domination Of Talk Radio And How To End It
The Center for American Progress and Free Press today released the first-of-its-kind statistical analysis of the political make-up of talk radio in the United States. It confirms that talk radio, one of the most widely used media formats in America, is dominated almost exclusively by conservatives.

The new report — entitled “The Structural Imbalance of Political Talk Radio” — raises serious questions about whether the companies licensed to broadcast over the public radio airwaves are serving the listening needs of all Americans.

While progressive talk is making inroads on commercial stations, right-wing talk reigns supreme on America’s airwaves. Some key findings:

– In the spring of 2007, of the 257 news/talk stations owned by the top five commercial station owners, 91 percent of the total weekday talk radio programming was conservative, and only 9 percent was progressive.

– Each weekday, 2,570 hours and 15 minutes of conservative talk are broadcast on these stations compared to 254 hours of progressive talk — 10 times as much conservative talk as progressive talk.

– 76 percent of the news/talk programming in the top 10 radio markets is conservative, while 24 percent is progressive.

Two common myths are frequently offered to explain the imbalance of talk radio: 1) the 1987 repeal of the Fairness Doctrine (which required broadcasters to devote airtime to contrasting views), and 2) simple consumer demand. Each of these fails to adequately explain the root cause of the problem. The report explains:

Our conclusion is that the gap between conservative and progressive talk radio is the result of multiple structural problems in the U.S. regulatory system, particularly the complete breakdown of the public trustee concept of broadcast, the elimination of clear public interest requirements for broadcasting, and the relaxation of ownership rules including the requirement of local participation in management. […]

Ultimately, these results suggest that increasing ownership diversity, both in terms of the race/ethnicity and gender of owners, as well as the number of independent local owners, will lead to more diverse programming, more choices for listeners, and more owners who are responsive to their local communities and serve the public interest.

Along with other ideas, the report recommends that national radio ownership not be allowed to exceed 5 percent of the total number of AM and FM broadcast stations, and local ownership should not exceed more than 10 percent of the total commercial radio stations in a given market.

The Center for American Progress and Free Press That's a joke.

the 1987 repeal of the Fairness Doctrine (which required broadcasters to devote airtime to contrasting views), and 2) simple consumer demand Thank God it was repealed!

Each of these fails to adequately explain the root cause of the problem. It's not for lack of trying. Air America had to be bailed out. Rosanne Barr left her show after 3 months in calif, Al Franken left his show..it is not for lack of trying. IMO-it is the message, not some sort of conspiracy or demographic problem. No one wants to hear a constant stream of negativity. HELLO!!

diverse programming, more choices for listeners, and more owners Another way of saying that "Since we can't win in a free market, let's legislate and force an unwanted agenda on listeners, who apparently, don't want to listen." So much for free press by the Center of American Progress and Free Press. LOL

Isn't freedom of the press in the bill of rights? I luv to hear complaints about conservatives going after terrorists with data mining. But isn't imminent domain and freedom of the press FAR more important than running lists through a computer to see if there is an Al-qaeda connection??? I just don't get it.

It's not about the fact that conservatism is the only way. It is about people wanting to abandon a free market (where listeners decide content) and have the govt regulate who should be on the air. I guess its not enough that the govt funds PBS and NPR which lean decidedly left. Not to mention ABC, NBC, CBS, and just about every cable channel. The left message gets out. Heck, 9 out of 10 reporters donate to the democrats. LOL (no bias there)
People complain about the FCC coming down on free speech when it pertains to vulgarity and questionable subject matter, but are ok with the govt dictating WHO should be on the radio??? That is not only absurd, but unconscionable.

It's all about controversy and customer demand. Conservative views draw the most ire and the most attention especially on radio. Most of what is said is debatable and so people are drawn to that type of programming.

You don't listen to Rush or Hannity do you.....

Often what is gone over, are outrageous comments by the leadership of the dems, newspaper articles, celebrities, fringe groups.
Outrageous??? You betcha. As far as debatable??? Sure, it is because conservatives have no problem explaining exactly what the vision is (except nobody will do so for immigration), and the dems seem not to have one for the fight against terror, social security, immigration, education. The real trick is to get into power and legislate stuff like this, and produce judges who legislate from the bench. With that stuff going on, who needs to debate how we solve real problems??

The new head of the UN is blaming American SUV's on global warming, which is causing famine in the Sudan, thus directly causing starvation, fighting, genocide.
Forgetting (or thinking we don't know better) that it is the hard core muslims killing the others. Yet all we get is the normal 'blame America' crap. Forgive me if I'm not the biggest NYT fan, or UN supporter. But this is why they HAVE to silence talk radio. Because they think Americans will follow them by listening to snippets and soundbites.

I don't listen to that stuff. I am as independent as it gets. People need to be able to think for themselves. I am not totally conservative and by no means absolute anything flys-take care of my problems -liberal.

What I don't like is the dramatics in either party. I am always on the side of truth. That crap about SUV's killing Sudanese is absolutely false. While we can do and ARE doing better with global warming me buying a friggin' Blazer isn't killing a soul over there. I said it before and I will say it again, we send more money than any other country on this planet to impoverished nations. It is not our fault that their CORRUPT GOVTS take aid money and pocket it.

I just put this stuff out so that it gives people reason to think about what's going on, rather than just adopting the party line and going off of soundbites. Thinking instead of hating makes for a better American.

I hear you bro. You couldn't have said it better.

I tend to go on rants when the left or anybody outside of this country starts talking about what we don't do in this world. It irritates the crap out of me. They blame the U.S for everything wrong in this world but when they are in trouble they want us to help them. When we help them it is never enough. Here I go again...

With all due respect (if one were to keep reading further), it says in the leg lounge to grab a beer, and anything goes. I think we take it as it was intended. Nobody asked you to click the thread. You took it upon yourself to enter the lep lounge, whose fault is that?

We are being pretty civil and respectful, others should do the same.
