Incredible pressure to compete for NCs and the recruiting pool is limited by academics. Plain and simple. I am not saying we cant win this way. I am just saying that is why coaches no longer beat down the door to coach there. I remember when several had "Notre Dame" clauses in their contract. One fun thing to do is check and see how many successful current coaches and asst. coaches passed through Notre Dame
(as assistants) . A few of the names might surprise you.

Name them (I am not here. I am on sabbatical). I heard R. Rodriguez at Michigan is one. Is that correct?

There were many reasons to blame for Lou leaving. He says that he got burned out. I have heard it was partly because the new AD increased admission requirements, and would not let Lou recruit a kid until he gave his blessing. I also heard it had something to with Lou and the AD not getting along at all. I also heard that Lou's wife was in bad health at the time and could not devote as much as he needed to the program. I dont how many or if any of these are true but I surmise that some of it is.

All could be true. Closest to what I have heard, (and I have asked, because I could not believe a Holtz team could fall apart so fast) was that some new ego imposed its will - and is still paying for hypocrisy.

I actually called a poster on this site who claims to be a former NDer (I blocked my phone # and advised Feds to monitor call :)) and asked. Call got cut off (surprise surprise) but he spoke highly of Holtz and Davies.

I am just a TV fan. I have no insight.

You've had enough Weis bashing ? Well get used to it, because it isn't going to stop unless Weis can learn to coach real soon.

This is just stupid. Well clearly if you think Weis needs to LEARN how to coach, maybe you should TEACH him. In fact, why don't you enlighten us all in how you are going to do this. You are a moron who probably doesn't know anything about football. Being a football player, I can tell that Weis knows his x's and o's, and I also think he handles the players really well. In '05 and '06 he came in as a first year coach and had the players doing things they had never even dreamt of before. Brady Quinn was a mediocre QB and Jeff Samardzija was listed as the 5th WR on the depth chart going into that season, and look at what CW did with them. I'm not trying to say that no blame can be put on the coach, but we are a big improvement this year. The two things that can take us back to glory for next season are team chemistry and depth. We have talent, but it has yet to fully prove itself. Assuming we have no injuries or any other major catastrophes, I think anything less than 10-2 would be an extreme failure next season. If we are 9-3 or worse, then bash CW all you want, but for right now I am convinced we need him. I think everyone else can also see that he does not need to learn how to coach, lol what a joke.

As far as I know, and I am by no means a historian on such things, Tony Rice was the only Prop 48 kid ever to play for the Irish.

I have known 4 JuCOs. They hard core asshole. NCAA should ban JUCOs, based on the four assholes I met. Force NFL to semipro these guys and skip college hypocrisy.

I should probably go to bed now.

Otherwise good post, but, does my current short, shriveled, and to the left status really affect your diehardon on ND?

(Curious - and you don't need to answer, but, have you ever played a single down of tackle football?)

Wow. Greatest post of the year. Yea I did play 4 years of HS football, if you must know. I'm sorry if I actually believe in our team..

(Curious-and you don't need to answer, are you above the age of 12?)

I've been an ardent CW supporter since the beginning, and I will say this...people are starting to tire of our team looking bad. Fix the problems, or find someone who can.

Perhaps this will be a better test if CW is the man...which program returns to national prominence first, Notre Dame or Michigan? The Fatman has a head start on DickRod. Time will tell.

I never really thought about that, very good point. They will go 3-9 this year like we did last year but we have more talent. There is no excuse for us not being better than them in the next couple of years.

There is no excuse. Michigan is going to run past us if CW is still the coach in the next few years.
You can all bring in the JUCO shit all you want, but Butch Davis and Satan have both turned their programs around, with a lot of young talent. 6-4 at this point in the season with this schedule is unacceptable. An almost disaster with SDSU, a Christmas spirit'd Michigan team who handed us the game, and we are 4-6. The close call with Stanford, 3-7.
Don't fool yourselves kids, we are no better than we were last year.

BTW, when SoCal runs up 50 on us (again), what will be the excuse this time around?

Our record says we are...

Don't fool yourself you know we are a good YOUNG team that just hasn't clicked yet..

By the way both those coaches inherted teams with depth.

What was Alabama's record last year? 6-6

What was Alabama's record in 2006? 6-6

Saban inherted a deep talented team.

So who says our team can't come out next yeart and do the same?

All of the bashing of CW, I've had enough. If Vince Lombardi were coaching us, it wouldn't be much different. Its not CW's fault JCC forces his throws. I liked his gameplan today. He ran it down their throats as much as he could therefore limiting our mistakes..I agree it was a bit premature to take our starters out but my lord some of you guys are making it painful for me to be an Irish fan. I come on here to talk about ND. Yes, we let 2 games slip away but I'm just happy we've been competitive in all of our games. Remember last year? We could easily be 8-2 but we're 6-4...is that CW's fault? Please pick 6's did us in in both of those games. We have vastly improved since last season and anybody who can not see that, well I do not know what to tell you. Turnovers on the road is the diff btw us being 8-2 and 6-4..Obviously recruits like Shaq Evans keep jumping aboard because they believe in our future, its time for us to start believing in them too.

The game plan this week has been the same as every week: run and run and run-- whether it works or not. It just so happens that, this week anyway, it did work. The pig headed insistence on running the ball has been an achilles heel. I don't care if the offensive linemen weigh 200, 300 or 400 lbs., they haven't got it done in the running game. Navy is a middle of the road team and if we employ this same strategy against USC it's going to be uglier than we think.

Conversely, I'm glad that ND won today. I was a little surprised that we ended up hanging on for dear life but it works. We're off the canvas now. What happens from here....

Agree. I always wonder why we rarely if ever seem to surprise the other team when we are on offense. We are all dieing for the schematic advantage!

Errr.. Me, thats who. Records are very deceiving things. Remember Hawaii last year, and how Georgia kicked their asses right back to the islands. What is the reason they haven't clicked yet? If your answer is the coaching then you would be right.

Definitely shocked at yesterday's ending. Disappointed too. But our defense looked incredible against a great running team. There were other positives. We are improving. We just need to step on someone's damn throat for once. That does lie directly with CW. I I'm a CW supporter but I don't blame anyone for being pissed at CW for pullin ghis foot off the pedal. That's 3 times he's done that (Navy, Pitt, Stanford), and it's unacceptable.

As to your point: You can't dismiss JUCO talent and lower standards just 'cause you don't want to hear about it. That's ignorant and childish. Because you know what, IT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE! You can't just ignore it. It allows you to turn around a program that much faster. If you're going to point to Saban and Davis all the time, they you're going to have to listen to counterargument, because it's vaild.

I thought we'd win 8 games this year, and if we win a bowl game we'll get there. It's just that we looked so good at times this year, a lot of got excited and thought we'd get more. We've taken some steps back (growing pains with these young kids), but we looked much better yesterday against a decent team, save for the last 4 minutes. Hopefully we'll keep improving. We'll see...

Immature post on my part, my bad. It was in the heat of the moment! I'm just as pissed about this team's performance as the next Irish fan. I'm one of CW's biggest supporters and even my patience is wearing thin but will a change in coach do anything positive in the forseeable future? That will remain to be seen. I think we'd lose a bunch of players if CW is canned. A lot of these players come here to play for him, like him or not. We'd have to bring in someone with some of the same offensive credentials if we did fire him. Mike Leach is a name to watch though I heard he doesn't recruit to well, at least he certainly can develop his players and his offense with our playmakers would be really fun to watch, I'd have to admit.

JH- I don't know if you can stretch your memory back to 2005 when Michigan, leading up to the ND game, said that everything we do on offense is window dressing. They then came out and beat us 47-21....ouch.

That was the first time that doubts crept into my mind about CW's coaching ability. However, the "These are Ty's recruits argument" was still on the table. Then, last year, we were a young team....true enough. This year we're still a young team....okay, I can buy it. If this team does not win next year than CW is going to have to go.

This year's recruiting class, for the fourth consecutive year, is ranked in the Top 10. That means that our juniors are a top ten class....where are they?

Regardless of what happens the rest of this year--win or lose vs. Syracuse, USC and the Bowl Game--CW will be around next year. His life or death will be determined next year. I hope that he makes it.

Zorich is now a prominent Chicago attorney. I did not know he was a prop 48. I dont know for sure if he was or was not.

Several coaches with ND ties are Alvarez, Strong and Meyer just to name a few. I used to know more but forgot.

Agreed 100% nice post. As to where our Juniors are, a lot of them transferred and or got jumped on the depth chart by underclassmen.

I knew Gruden's dad coached there but not Jon. When was Dinardo a coach there? I know he played in the early seventies but did not know he coached there,

I have an empty feeling realizing that we haven't beaten anyone worth a shite.

umm sing along with me.... It's "More Than a Feeling!"

Schedule weak and stumble through... impresses no one. Just don't break out the green jerseys against USC. It will smack of desperation.
The Gator Bowl will take Notre Dame for the filled hotel rooms and let the scoreboard be damned.

...When Jimmy signed that letter on the steps of the College Football HoF... he lined up the fates against him. That is as close as he will get to that place.

Cheers to Golden Tate. He is exceptional.

But the rest of the football world, sans NBC, has moved on. Army Football used to matter too. It still has tradition without the expectation of winning.

ND is under 60% winning percentage in the last eleven years. That winning percentage ranks 43rd in Div I. ... beneath such powerhouses as ... Toledo....Air Force.... Marshall.........

The bowl game record is so horrible because the tie-ins allow Chambers of Commerce to ensure high hotel occupancy, which invariably sets up a mismatch. Can't really hold a mismatch against them. so....

....are you fucking kidding me?

Juxtapose CW and Saban's COLLEGE careers and then tell me that you have the nerve to mention them in the same breath. Saban has won a National Championship.

If you want to be an apologist at least attempt to be a realistic one.
