The option next year?

Say Jones wins the starting QB position next year. Could anyone see Charlie running any type of option with him and Prince? Would anyone have any objections to it? I know Charlie is strictly NFL, but you have to admit that seeing Jones and Prince running the option would get you to stand on your toes. Even if he does not win the job, just having jones speed and athleticism would be beneficial for plays like this. Thoughts?

No.

Jones is not an option QB nor has he ever been one.

Not even Nebraska runs it anymore. Neat offense for a non BCS mid major or service academy. Not for CW.

Are we talking option, Lou Holtz style or spread option WVU/Urban Meyer (The BGSU and Utah version)?

Either way, my answer stays the same.

Clausen, Jones, Frazer or Sharpley will be running this pro style offense catered to the strength of the offensive personnel and with play calling to attack the weaknesses of the defensive opponent.

He'll be on the field in some capacity because he'll be willing to do so.

But I think he will go 100% at winning the QB job.

it blows my mind trying to guess who will be the qb next year. so many options! there's going to be a lot of daydreaming on my part in the offseason trying to picture who's going to be connecting with whom on tds. but one thing i hope, whoever wins the job, that the competition for the starting role never stops. IMO, that's why recruiting top talent is so crucial: it breeds competition on a daily basis, where everyone must play better. Not to be too longwinded, but i think that's the reason why our defense has holes this year (and the offensive line as well). who's challenging the starters to be better than they already are?

Reps for a great point. It has worked for USC.

why in the hell would we want to run the option? That isn't why JC, DD, and Frazier came here, that isn't why prince, aldridge, little and Kumara came here. You don't get high caliber recruits on board, that want a shot on going to the NFL on board running the option. Those days are over with. Yeah, yeah florida runs the spread, but I gotta believe that after a couple more years that gimmick will run its coarse and goes away.

At least that is what I'm hoping for anyway!

Single Wing next year? Why not? Jones could run or pass, multiplicity.

Jones, if he's the QB, will have an option of handing off or keeping occasionally. But running an Option offense requires a considerable amount of time to get down the reads and the timing with the backs. It's based on discipline and repetition. Practice makes perfect. Unfortunatley, the NCAA only allows 20 hours of weekly practice time. Time that Quinn needed all of to excel in Weis offense and he had two years as a Starter under his belt when he enrolled in The Weis University of Quarterbacks.

I'd expect to see Jones running more QB draws, rollouts, and waggles as he's more mobile than Quinn and probably more mobile than the other 3 QBs. But he'll run Charlie's base offense and need all the time available to learn it and perfect it.

Should be a great Spring.

Im not saying go to a bone offense, or the flex like Navy! Jesus. I am saying with Jones is it plausible he lines up in the I formation at some point and runs the option? Not like the Urban Meyer offense, but just for a change of pace in the game, maybe a trick play or something. I am probably daydreaming, but I am trying to get a break from all the USC talk today. If he does earn the start next year, do you think CW will call some QB draws if Jones proves he can run?

sorry, whenever I hear option offense the military acadamies and spread option offenses automatically come to my mind. I think CW will make some changes to the offensive scheme to fit the starting QB's strong points, whoever is starting next year. Major changes to the whole scheme? I don't think so, but just more plays in the offense designed for their strong points. Thats what I think.

Look directly above your post!

Whoever the QB is next year, he won't have McKnight, Samardzija, Harris, Santucci, Morton, and maybe Carlson and Sullivan to lean on. Are you aware that Quinn with the best receiving corps in ND history and a Top 4 All-Time ND RB and a senior dominated OLine has been sacked more times this season then he was in a Willingham/Diedrick Offense?

He'll need to develop reads and timing with a talented (in high school) receiving corps and need to run for his life with a young, green OLine. We may need all 4 QBs.

Strictly pro style! I know Clausen is a 5 star. Were the other three (Jones, Frazer and Sharpley) all considered 4 star QB's coming in? Regardless, it should be interesting to see how this all plays out!

Yes they were 4 stars on Rivals. Rivals had Sharpley the #12 ProStyle QB while Scout had him #18. Frazer was #9 Pro Style QB on Rivals; #9 at Scout. Rivals had Jones as the #2 Dual QB while Scout ranked him #34 QB (overall) with 3 stars.

Off the 17 guys Scout rated higher than Sharpley only Colt McCoy seems to be doing well at this point.
