Here is a question for you:

Is letting a team run over you for 200 yards in a game, ok with you?

1) they ran for 178
2) Against the 1st team they ran for 154
3) they scored 7 points against the 1st team in over 50 minutes played

200 yards are fine when you don't give up first downs or, more importantly, points.

Holding Navy under 178 has not been done all year. It is a feat that few teams accomplish.

in the first half, Navy got:
28 yards on it's first 5 drives...and 0 points
58 yard drive and 7 points
6 more yards, then fumbled

That's 92 yards in 1 half. 10 in the air, 82 on the ground. That's in 7 possessions.

1 Drive got a TD.
1 netted 15 yards.
The rest were in single digits.

So...map this out over the course of a game and you get 14 points against the 1st Team D. 20 yards passing and 164 on the ground. And 14 points.

Well, our first team D held them to less rushing a little more passing, and ONLY 7 points.

That's success by any measure.

If you assume Navy will get 3 possessions a quarter and gets an average of 15 yards per possession, they are gonna rush for 180 yards. In any game, that will generally get you NOWHERE.

The fact is holding Navy to 178 yards overall is great. Holding them to 154 with the 1st team is EXCELLENT.

Yawn. So the thread is entitle "The Navy Hangover" and we held NAVY to under 200 yards, but we're supposed to assume you WEREN'T talking about Navy??? Are you for real?
Next.

Yes, that is the name of this thread. You pulled my "Holding someone to 200 yards" quote from another thread.

The point here is that DUKE, DUKE, THE DUKE, the Duke of 6 wins in the last 8 years excluding this year "held" them to 207 yards. So I will say it again so you can understand it, WE SHOULD BE BETTER THAN THAT.

Isn't 178 better than 207?

Sure it is. Except I would expect a team thats won 6 games in 8 years to blow out the average on the bad side.

You my friend, are unreal. You cannot see the hyprocricy of your posts no matter how many different ways I point them out.

Why are you avoiding the point of how hypocritical you sound? Yeah, we know we should do better, but that defensive game was damn good! The defense won the game; YOU EVEN SAID SO YOURSELF!!!!!!! But then you say it was embarrassing and that we should do better!!! What the F***??? Which is it? And don't say both.

You're like that commercial on TV right now, where the lady gets in the cab and wants to go to downtown and the airport at the same time, which is impossible. The cab driver realizes she's crazy. I realize your argument is crazy, but the fact that you still back it up is even more crazy.

And if you want to do the "Team A did great vs. Team B so that means Team C should kill Team B" dance, I can tango with you all damn day. Ex: ND passed for 383 yards vs. North Carolina, while Georgia Tech passed for only 97 yards. Therefore, if we play GT in a bowl game, we should outgain them in the air 1000-25. Wow, that was easy. I like your logic. ("But GT never passes the ball". Doesn't matter. Neither does Navy, but Phork ignores that fact.)

Dude, you lost this time. You sound pathetic backing your logic. Just say Notre Dame needs to be better. Of course you're right! But to speak out of both sides of your mouth? You sound stupid. I hate to say that about a fellow Domer fan, but when you can't even give TRUE credit to our boys (defense) when they deserve it, then I don't really feel so bad.

P.S. Read LovemyIrish's post again, and tell me it was embarrassing...

These are the facts:

Navy put up 300yards/game and no less than 200 yards in a game the last 2 years.
The teams these yards were gained on are subpar, at best, INCLUDING a piss poor Duke team with 6 wins in 8 years which held them 207 yards this year.
The ND Defense won us that game.
Having 200 yards run up on you is a bad thing, no matter who you play.

Now, I am not sure where the TeamA vs TeamB BS come from, but I expect that at this point ND is a little bit better than Duke. And not 30 yards better either. I am in no way extrapolating results or predicting where anyone would end up. ND played Duke last year. ND played Navy last year. Navy had over 300 yards in 2007 vs Duke, 257 vs ND. 2008 shows 207 yards against Duke, 178 vs ND. Totally legit comparison.

I'm not sure what credit you want me to give, I said the D won the damn game? Is there more credit I need to put out there....?

And since you have quite obviously figured it out now I am leaving it alone, although I expect your rebuttal any second.

I agree. The defense was very strong against Navy. The offense looked iffy until late. The defense looked the best it has all year.

the total yardage is less important than the stat of NAVY being 1 for 13 on 3rd down. they pummeled us on 3rd down situation last year so dominating here is significant regardless of the yardage, unless of course NAVY was subsequently 12 for 12 on 4th down conversion, which would and could never happen.

The one thing that should come out of the Navy game is that when you have a team down then put the peddle to the fllor and KEEP them down. ND relaxed in the 4th quarter...they thought the game was over with. A team like Navy will never quit and I feel good about that because in a few years those young men are ones who will be keeping me safe!
Let's hope the coqaching staff and team will remember this in future games.

Announcers (one of which is an ND grad - Beurlein) started urgently reminding viewers that Naval had just scored a fast comeback during one of their past games this year.

I think announcers were loudly trying to tell ND to keep the foot on the pedal.

Aside: I really liked Beurlein's commentary.
