Here is a question for you:
Is letting a team run over you for 200 yards in a game, ok with you?
1) they ran for 178
2) Against the 1st team they ran for 154
3) they scored 7 points against the 1st team in over 50 minutes played
200 yards are fine when you don't give up first downs or, more importantly, points.
Holding Navy under 178 has not been done all year. It is a feat that few teams accomplish.
in the first half, Navy got:
28 yards on it's first 5 drives...and 0 points
58 yard drive and 7 points
6 more yards, then fumbled
That's 92 yards in 1 half. 10 in the air, 82 on the ground. That's in 7 possessions.
1 Drive got a TD.
1 netted 15 yards.
The rest were in single digits.
So...map this out over the course of a game and you get 14 points against the 1st Team D. 20 yards passing and 164 on the ground. And 14 points.
Well, our first team D held them to less rushing a little more passing, and ONLY 7 points.
That's success by any measure.
If you assume Navy will get 3 possessions a quarter and gets an average of 15 yards per possession, they are gonna rush for 180 yards. In any game, that will generally get you NOWHERE.
The fact is holding Navy to 178 yards overall is great. Holding them to 154 with the 1st team is EXCELLENT.
