I wish we could have got MCcoy last year. I think he would have made an immediate impact on this dline. It would give them a blow and an extra player to rotate in.

Has McCoy done anything down in OK?

To my knowlege, no. Then again, OU didn't need immediate help.

I just don't know about that guys. I've watched the play numerous times. Wooden had a great oppurtunity to either intercept or swat the ball down. It went right by him....Aaaghh, never mind. It's over so I guess I should just move on. I apologize to all of my fellow Irishmen for bringing up such a heartbreaker.

and how do you think Ambrose Wooden feels about that play? Personally, I think he played it pretty well. He missed the ball by a matter of inches and it really was a perfect throw. But of all the people that replay that play, I'm thinking Ambrose Wooden feels worse about it than any of us. He did his best. And he still managed to chase down Jarett and tackle him to prevent an immediate TD although of course in retrospect it may have been better if he had scored right then. Ok, my only real point was that that one play shouldn't define what kinda of corner Wooden is.

Personally, I think Wooden and Lambert are both pretty good corners. Of course, neither is perfect, but it's nice to have a few guys who you know can go in and do a pretty good job.

Yea, that's why every QB has his best career day against us. Because of how good our secondary is.

Face it- the pass rush sucks, but the secondary sucks worse, or just as bad. Results are what they are.

Those two go hand in hand, if you have no pass rush, how long do you think our secondary can cover a WR? Starts with a pass rush, a good CB/FS/SS can only cover a guy for so long. Shit, give any half ass decent QB 5 seconds to throw the ball, they'll pick ya apart. Soon as we get some stud DLs, we'll be fine. With the undersized LBs we have, blitzing every other down isn't much of a better option. Look how that worked against Michigan. I think our secondary is much improved from last year, but once we get those D linemen we are going after, I think we'll be in wonderful shape in '08.

No. I really think the pass rush is worse than the secondary. It's impossible for even the best athletes to hold off receivers for long periods of time.

Wooden played that 4th and 9 as well as it could be played. Leinart just made a perfect throw, and Jarrett made an amazing catch. But there was nothing else Wooden could have done.

Well, if he put the kid on The Rack and made him 8 feet tall he could have defended it!!!

;)

Yeah, I have watched that pass a few times...there really was no way to stop it from being caught except Pass Interference.

This excuse-making for the secondary is hilarious. Have you all watched some of the plays they've been torched on the past two years? If you're honestly going to pin that on the pass rushers, or say that even good corners and safeties would have had those things happen, you're just being dishonest.

The secondary has pretty good coverage. Their problem is that they have no speed, so if a receiver gets behind them, its almost a guarantee that he is gone. I believe that UCLA threw for about 220 yards against us. If you remove those two long plays, then they threw for only about 120. But thats the problem, if a receiver gets past us, see you later.

I do get frustrated watching Terrail play. He is a talented kid but sometimes he just doesn't get it done. He is unusual because every game he seems to play differently. MSU and UCLA, he played great. Stanford, not so much. However, I'll take Lambert over Wooden. I still can't forgive him for the USC game.

I was with you right up til those last two sentences. Recently there was a large photo of that catch posted but I don't recall the site. That pass, the catch, AND the coverage are clinic material for examples of excellent execution. In addtion there hasn't been an ND DB since Rossum that would have been able to run the receiver down after that catch.

"Moron", "dishonest"

Do you have any substance to post or just ad hominem attacks?

I haven't seen some of the plays of the past two years, I've seen all of them. From your hyperbole and insults it doesn't sound like you've seen many or are too familiar with the abilities and performance of most of the players.

It's amazing that whether the games are shown on NBC, CBS, ABC, or ESPN the announcers all comment on the inordinate amount of time that opposing QBs have had to wait on receivers getting open. Herbstreit, among others, picked ND to contend for the Title, IF the defense could do its part. Of course all those announcers and pundits might be part of the "anti-ND media conspiracy" but then how do you explain Tom Pagna and Don Criqui on WestwoodOne? One a former ND coach, the other an ND grad and both are critical of the pass rush.

No one here is saying ND's CBs are All-Americans but they are better than average. The lack of a pass rush allows WRs to exploit the CBs and TEs and RBs to exploit the LBs in coverage whether you have average players or All-Americans. The AA caliber guys will get beaten less but will still get beaten when the QB can wait and pick and chose his moment.

ND plays a base Nickel because we don't have LBs that can cover and a DL that can dominate.

I don't care how good you are if the DL and LB's can't get pressure on the QB even the best DB's will get burned. What hurts us the most is that we are playing with guys that aren't world beaters back there but that Duke and Zibby don't really defend the pass that well. They get sucked up in on the run and look for the big hit. Case in point, the Purdue game were Zibby went for the big hit before halftime rather then wraping the guy up, if he wraps him up it saves the secondary 50 yards. To tell you the truth the only person I am disapointed in this season in the secondary is Zibby, I have actually gotten to the point of thinking that we are a better team without him back there. I would rather see him line up covering the RB or TE and play more of a SS/LB role, rather then coverage.

If I remember right we had the same problems in the game he was in for Zibby. Got burned deep on a f'n HB pass and we were just lucky that the WRs from Stanford couldn't catch a cold that day. He was a better tackler that day than Zibby has been, but we were still having some coverage issues.
