I am normally a patient man, but John Tenuta has proven to me that his EGO is bigger than his common sense. Even when blitzing is NOT working, he keeps going back to it. Here are some issues I have with his total package.

1. He refuses to stop blitzing no matter the failure to get to the QB. Did anyone notice that the final interception of the day was one of the few times that we dropped 7 and only rushed 4. Hey John, "pretty freakin amazing how tough it is for an inexperienced QB to find an open receiver when everyone is double covered"!!!!!!

2. Why would you allow no. 18 from BC to run single covered for 10 catches all day. At some point, you have to double cover him and make another guy beat you. Again, I think this is Tenuta's arrogant attitude of trying to force HIS style.

3. His system has our DB;s confused. Several times today, I saw our DB's lost.

4. Finally, Harrison Smith is NOT a DB. He gets lost and confused to easy. He is best at OLB, rushing the QB or chasing down plays. He got turned around more times today than a merry-go-round.

5. As for the future, the front 7 is starting to find a groove and they will only get better. Imagine this front with one more year of growth. I think Ethan and KLM could be really special on the DL. Teo is just so awesome!!!

I am ready for a new DC with some basic packages which allow our kids to play without looking lost in pass defense.

Jonesman, I like your posts, but I think this one may be a little off....

1. They have dialed back the blitzes, the last couple of games. I don't see Tenuta sending the house on every play, now.

2. I can't argue against this. I just have to assume that there was a reason for it. Maybe they(the ND coaching staff) felt the need for extra defenders against the run? I don't know. It certainly did piss me off, though, to see that kid running wide open on almost every play.

3. Corwin Brown is the DBs coach. If the DBs are confused, maybe it is Brown's fault?

4. Even LBs have to cover guys, from time to time. Smith played LB today. I don't see what your complaint is?

5. The front 7 has made tremendous improvement. Doesn't Tenuta get any credit for that?

If these kids are smart enough to get into ND, and to keep up academically.....then they are smart enough to learn Tenuta's defense. You can't blame him for that.

McCarthy and Sergio Brown started at the Safeties. Harrison Smith, Brian Smith, and Manti Te'o started at the Linebackers.

I did like what a saw from Slaughter. Still undersized and hesitated but the potential is there.

Agreed....and it was refreshing to see him out there. There was a point in the second half where you started to see the D gel...We're fine gentlemen....BC's had our number as of late. Enjoy the win, have a brew and rest easy......the Irish have another winning streak running.

One game does not constitute a streak...

Ummm, no. Smith played LB, and was solid as hell against the run. We looked more athletic against the run than I've seen us all year. And my man-crush for Manti grows and grows...

Couldn't agree more on Manti....

In his honor, we should all refer to each other as "brah" until he graduates.... ;)

Kmoose,
I think you may want to go back and watch the game a little better.

1. We brought an extra LB on almost every single pass. There were a minimum of 5 rushers on almost every pass. Amazingly, the final play we brought 4 and the QB throws the INT directly to Smith. How about only rushing 3 on a few plays and dropping 8. Make a QB throw in betwee coverage.

2. There is NO excuse to allow there WR to run wild for 10 catches.

3. Yes, Brown is the DB coach, but we are running Tenuta's system. These are his defensive schemes.

4. Harrison played OLB for a couple series and then back to OLB or nickel back. He cost us one TD because he blew the coverage. I watched him turn the wrong way on another big pass hwere he left the WR uncovered.

5. I will give most of this credit purely to the kids getting more mature. KLM, Ethan and Teo are learning.

I'm just happy for the W. Hayseed needs to find his place in our D and it is NOT as a safety.

smith needs to find his place on the bench. idc where he might have been successful, his mistakes are glaring and the opponents always take advantage of it. any time a slow qb fakes you out of your jock strap.....you need to choose another sport.

1. Maybe it was a run blitz? after being gashed last week for around 300 yards, you have to believe that Boston would try and do the same, especially considering it's their strength, in regards to us then only sending 4 later in the day, I would guess that was down to game management, BC had to pass.

2. I guess the same could be said about some guy catching 11 passes in the same game!?!

3. Yeah their his schemes, they seem to have worked OK elsewhere, maybe our players aren't good enough, or maybe it may have something to do with the fact it's only the players second season within the scheme, the first with Tenuta calling the play's?

This is what I saw with Harrison. He was lined up man on the slot guy in the 3rd quarter. He, for some reason, sprints over to cover the WR on the sideline even though he already has a CB draped all over him. The slot receiver is wide open for the catch and the safety has to make the play.

And of course the total confusion of Harrison on the touchdown pass. This wasn't all his fault, as the inside WR ran underneath the out WR and to the corner of the end zone. The CB up top should have switched coverage and let Harrision take the other receiver. But still, Harrison just stood there looking completely lost.

I don't see how kids who can qualify for ND cannot make simple decisions on the football field.

Also, Gary Gray had tight coverage on his receiver all day long, only to not play the ball when it was in the air. I think Gray's lack of awareness is PT and he should get better at plays on the ball, but he didn't help things at all today.

Agree with most of it but give some props to the rush defense. BC held to 70 yards on 29 carries. Montel Harris was held to 38 yards on 22 carries (1.7 avg). A kid that ran for 264 the week before.

And he should be

And he should be

Tenuta's on the hot seat, fellas.

If things don't start to change (3 sacks a game and less than 300 yards offense against) then hopefully he will retire. Not sur eif Corwin is the answer either. Not sure how much blame of this he should take. Wo could we get that is that good? If we win out CW should be very solid for next year but what would the job security be under CW? How about the D-cord from Boise St.? Our athletes have to be at least that good?

This are things that can not be simulated at practice. Just like the guys on the line, certian things muist be learned in a game. People forget that Gary Gray was a very highly rated CB out of high school. We got players in the secondary, i just do not know what they are doing.

Harrison Smith Sucks! He is lost no matter where he plays. He cannot cover anyone. He does not understand 7 on 7 football. That is evident. Much better getting him out of the FS spot, & focused on the run. But we did not fill the spot with anyone anymore competent. Walls lost his job, right. I didn't see him all night. I hope so he is the only DB worse the H. Smith

I agree on this. I was ecstatic when we landed him in that great recruiting class. Then he had injuries, and then just didn't seem to play. I think in reality he was very young experience wise. I expect him to get better as the season goes along. I think Gray is the highest rated CB we have recruited in a very long time. He should be a Manti Teo in the secondary type of player. Maybe by next year, we will start to see his potential with a full season under his belt.

If anyone heard Pete Sampson from Irish Illustrated on Rivals radio on Friday morning, he said that from everything he has heard, he would be shocked if Tenuta came back, because it was a 2 year contract, this is year 2, and they will more than likely part ways after the season.
