PITTSBURGH -- One of the more stunning sights in Notre Dame's 27-22 loss to No. 8 Pittsburgh on Saturday was kicker David Ruffer trotting out for the Irish's first field-goal attempt, a 42-yarder in the first half.
Because all freshman Nick Tausch had done was hit 14 of his 17 attempts on the season. But Tausch suffered an injury during pregame warmups and couldn't take the field.
"Our kicker pulled up lame in warmups," Irish coach Charlie Weis said. "When I came out, (special teams coach Brian Polian) came up to me and looked like he'd seen a ghost."
Ruffer hit that 42-yard field goal, but he later had an extra point blocked. Weis didn't have any further update on Tausch's status moving forward.
