No. That was just the most obvious one. How about the punt return for TD. How about 3rd and 26. I posted on game day thread before the play that this was the single most important play of the game. And ND was still winning. They gave up that first down, and we lose later. It was more than one play. I saw a brief clip of Kelly talking about the last call. He said he would do it again. Think about it: ONE on ONE coverage on Floyd by a defender 5'10". If your QB is good enough to play D1 ball, he is good enough to give it a shot.

I'm not ready to toss Kelly. As a matter of fact, I am rooting for him even harder than I have for any coach other than Weis through the tough times. Davies and Ty? Meh. I shouted in public to get rid of them.

I'm with you on that, and I remember you calling out that play during the game. Still we had a chance to win it on the Tulsa 19 and the best kicker in the country waiting. Was Kelly just trying to prove he was going to **** up worse then every other situation that you mentioned prior. He still had a chance to give these young men a much needed, if not entirely deserved win, and he doesn't kick the damn ball. I will root for him just as hard as I always have and support him as long as he is our coach, but right now **** it.

ps. Have I ever told you that I love venison.

I started an account here during the coaching search, but haven't signed on much since. I read posts all the time, and hold back from commenting. I'm an adult like most on here, so getting into a virtual war or words is pointless. After reading all the post since the loss, I've got to say something.

We lost to Michigan and it sucked. We lost to Michigan State, and that fake field goal hurt. We lost to Stanford and the game wasn't even close. We lost to Navy and made the option look epic. We lost to Tulsa on a somber Saturday where football was second to a young mans life.

All of those five losses were bad in some way shape or form. We as Notre Dame fans take wins and losses to heart. It can brighten up our Saturday nights and Sunday mornings. It can also ruin a perfect weekend even though we can't control it. I for one love MY Irish. I live in Alabama, but in the fall my second home is South Bend, IN. I love Notre Dame football, and I believe in Brian Kelly and here is why.

Stop getting sucked into the Lou Holtz media love. Stop thinking that we are better then we are. Stop believing that one single season will fix all of our problems. The sky isn't falling people, put your umbrella's away. Brian Kelly has taken over a team that is a combined 12-12 the last two seasons. We have more faults then positives with this team. Brian Kelly knew that when he took this job. He said all the right things about winning, is because that is what a coach is supposed to do.

Our offensive line is blocking in an entire new scheme. Our offense has been drastically changed, and that is not something that gets perfected over 6 MONTHS! April to October people, that is the time he has had to get this going. Our defense is slow, and he's made that a huge point of interest in his recruiting. Charlie did not target top talent on the defensive side. If you have any doubts, look at our safeties. Motta, Slaughter, McCarthy, and Smith are not Division one starting defensive players. Their is a reason Corwin Brown wanted Smith and Motta at linebacker. Their coverage skills are horrible. Our linebackers, while great in size are not 3-4 linebackers. He has had to shift this D around to try and be competitive. The defensive line will be a HUGE strength next year with the size and speed that will be there. This year, they have been undersized against everyone. Even Tulsa!

We get so excited with these recuriting sites. We think that since Kelly took over two high classes that he is supposed to get us to a BCS bowl in year one. We are who we are people. We are a mediocre football team right now. We are a mediocre program this year. We went out a got a coach that has won where ever he has been. We went out and got a coach that has NEVER had a winning season in his first season at a school. We wanted an experienced Collegiate coach, and we got that. WE as fans asked for Coach Kelly, and after 9 games we have decided that he is a lost cause. Give me a break!

We are not the Notre Dame from the 40's through the early 90's. We are a team that is rebuilding a football program, in the mold of a coach who knows how to rebuild. I trust that coach who was hired in December. I don't trust the fair weathered fans who flock to this site when we lose. I don't trust people who tend to believe they are more qualified to run this program, even though they are probably to out of shape to reach for their laptop without breaking a sweat. My wife is an Auburn grad, and we are watching her number 1 Auburn Tigers take care of business. This time last year Gene Chizik was being questioned, now he is as cool as a cucumber. Urban Meyer has lost 3 games already, and he was our holy grail of choices. He lost Tebow, we lost our own NFL quaterback.

I personally thought Jimmy was a ****y prick of a kid, but his collegiate talent was top notch. He was a great decision maker on the field, and didn't get enough credit for that. In this offense I think he would have excelled. We are starting a first year QB, who had to learn a whole new system. Oh yeah a BCS bowl or bust this year huh guys? The INT by Rees today was not BK's fault. That was a freshman QB, who made a bad decision. It happens with a freshman guys, it happens.

Notre Dame football is still at a low right now, and it's about time people accepted that. Do I think Kelly will build this program up to a high standard, well hell yes I do. National Titles though, that is probably not on the plate anytime soon. For now, we are who we are..........
IrishSteeler what part of Alabama you from, I lived there 25 years and loved rubbing my beloved Irish in the face of Crimson Tide fans! Always boasting we have won 6 of the 7 games head to head and twice for the national title. Those were the good old days! Im glad now I have moved to Arizona so I can sit here in shame

Okay, I've read every post on this thread and I had to chime in. I literally started an account so I could get in on this great discussion. This will be my first post on IrishEnvy.com and I promise it won't be the last. I have been reading forum posts about Irish football for years now and I guess I never really had the courage to reply to any of them... Well here it goes...

I must say that I was pretty moved by the parent post by IrishSteelers. I'm not sure how long you've been an Irish football fan but I enjoy the full scope you gave in your post and the knowledge you seem to possess of Notre Dame Football. I appreciated what you said and I have to say I agree 100% and I am backing you up because I know it takes a true fan to accept the fact that basically, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame are in a rebuilding phase on the football field.

To touch on a few other replies to the parent post, today's loss, while hard to stomach and as embarrassing as it was, I am still not ready to say Notre Dame Football is dead. I am willing to say the football program is in a rut, a funk, even a cold streak because I strongly believe Brian Kelly is the man this football team needs. Not only the football team, but the community, the alumni, the fans, and the so many great players that are proud to have played at Notre Dame. Coach Kelly is up against all odds. He is handling this atrocious year better than I ever could. I applaud him and everything he and his coaching staff are doing.

As far as today's game goes, yeah that was tough to watch but things get bad only to get better. I wouldn't call BK a bad coach because he asked Tommy Rees to throw a ball to the 6'3" Michael Floyd who was covered one-on-one by a 5'9" DB. I'd take my chances with that anyday. Yes, it was a less that great throw, and yes, we did have David Ruffer ready to boot it through the uprights but that's Brian Kelly's offense. Get used to it. If Floyd would have made that catch we'd be praising Coach Kelly but since the young true Frosh QB made a poor throw it's game over and everyone's pointing fingers. Kelly tried to play his cards and just came up short.

I say so what to a bowl game. Is it really that important? What is Notre Dame gonna gain from playing in a small bowl game? Extra practices? A small chunk of money that would otherwise be considered pocket change at UND? Or is it just the fact that Notre Dame made it to a bowl game? What the Irish need are players recruited by Brian Kelly to play in Brian Kelly's coaching style. Look at Damaris Johnson who made our punt coverage (No. 1 in the nation going into Saturday) look silly. Would an Irish fan like to have had him on the Home team? I know I would have. The point is, Notre Dame does not need 5-star recruits. It needs players who are bred for the Spread offense and will leave everything on the field. I mean, do you really think Notre Dame can still pull in gobs of 5-star recruits? Look at the turmoil the football program is in. What 18 year old kid coming out of high school wants to come to the harsh South Bend winter? And dare I mention the academic standards at Notre Dame? It's a no-brainer. Brian Kelly recruits his style of players and everyone is on the same page, the Irish will win. Coach Kelly has proven it everywhere he has coached. And I personally am willing to suffer through a rebuilding year if it means the Irish will one day find themselves back in the BCS rankings and among the elite college football teams. Competing for National Championships may be an even farther stretch but this Irish fan has high hopes and is not giving up on my team.
