Actions of a quality coach or not?

1. Waste valuable spring practice time implementing a spread package that was abandoned after the first game

2. Fail to properly motivate his team emotionally for every game

3. Go into a game with a gameplan that ensures a loss

4. Can't figure out a way to stop the triple option against a team outmanned at every position

5. 3 games into the season start having physical practices to replace the low intensity NFL type practices that were the norm

6. Make light of breaking the 43 year win streak.

7. Fail to recruit a kicker that can make a 40 yard FG in his first 3 seasons as coach

8. Fail to field a solid defense in his first 3 seasons

I would say that the above actions are that of a coaching staff that is either incompetant or learning how to coach rather than that of a quality coaching staff.

1. Weis learned from his mistake. At least he abandoned the offense and went back to his traditional offense.

2. Something that we all hope he has learned how to do this year.

3. What game would this be? I can guarantee that NO COACH is going to go into a game with a plan to lose the game.

4. Can anyone stop the Triple Option? that's why they are so high in Rushing rankings.

5. Big Mistake I'm sure he's found that out.

6. Not sure what you mean by this but. It happened now lets move on.

7. Our kicking game is terrible no doubt. I don't remember when Notre Dame has had what you would call a "good" kicker. (I'm only 25)

8. That may be why Corwin Brown was brought in this year. I think when he gets the players that fit his system, you'll see a different defense on the field.

Alot of what you stated is true but I can only hope that Weis has learned from his mistakes this year and that hopefully you will not be able to have this same list next year.

i think the most crisp and effective play that Notre Dame ran was the rollout play to Grimes early in the first quarter. That was very pretty.

The turning point of the game was the screen pass to Jabbie on third down that set up the game winning TD

Solo, I think it's crazy to point to those things as evidence that Weis is a "bad coach". He did a REALLY bad job this year, no doubt about it. And I do think the issues with getting his players sufficiently motivated and focused are really serious, and they definitely hurt the team last year as well. But many of the things you point to are exactly the same kinds of traits that made him such a good coach in '05 and '06. He's got a long way to go with this team, and I have plenty of doubts about whether he'll get them there. But the jury is definitely still out on him.

Lots of people think I'm crazy! I'm just a touhg critic. At times too tough. I don't think that Weis should be fired at this point. That would be detrimental to the program. And his 2 BCS bowl seasons certainly earned him a 4th year. But the lousy job he did in 2007 coupled with a 3-9 record (something that should never happen at ND) would have him on a very short leash if I were the AD. He'd have an 8 win minimum for 2008 if I were calling the shots.

By the way, I think if Weis had used a more physical style of practive in 2005 and 2006, we might not have gotten blown out every time we faced a top tier team. Can't prove it of course, that's just my theory. So I think his poor coaching skills did hurt us in 2005/6, but we simply had the talent and experience to cover his mistakes. A number one draft pick QB covers a lot of coaching ineptitude (reference Chuck Amato with Rivers as QB and without).

Happy we won the last game and am encouraged immensely with the play of our freshmen. However, I am really concerned about the remark by a sports analyst that he heard the F-Bomb used repeatedly by our coaching staff to the players on the sideline. And if he heard, Charlie probably heard it and....should have immediately put a stop to it. There is no place for that language at Notre Dame...especially on the part of the coaching staff. Tom Pagna said it much better than I in this post. Stopping this should be the #1 priority in the off season and coaches that use this language or condone it should be fired immediately. WE ARE NOTRE DAME....not some "blinded by football" school with "win at any cost" mentality.

I don't think he was saying those things were equal.

But I think it says alot about someone's ability to motivate (or lack thereof) if your only method to motivate is to curse and scream in a player's face. IMO, that shows a complete lack of intelligence and creativity.

Sometimes coaches can be quiet and reserved - there is absolutely a time for that. But there are plenty of times where players just need a kick in the ass. I would agree that if all you can do to motivate people is scream in their face then yes you lack the ability to coach. But is this something we see day in and out? (It was rhetorical so I will answer - NO).

If memory serves this was the line that was being addressed, and frankly I want some mean cuss running it that will chew you up and spit you out for screwing up. That is how you get nasty. Think that when Joe Moore was here he spoke like the Virgin Mary?

Didn't Pagna coach on Lou's staff ? I find it hard to believe that as fierey a coach as lou is he didn't drop a few f-bombs or other foul language on a player or two.
