Two things became evident to me this game. One of them I've thought all along and the other is a revelation (where's NDinLA??).
One: We can't run the football. Last weeks gawdy stats were piled up on a Purdue defense that can't stop the run. Their linebackers were/are terrible. I said ND wouldn't run for more than 120 this week and now I feel vindicated (but not happy) that I said as much. The o-line just looks blasé. I don't know how else to describe them....they couldn't get 2 inches on a few occassions this game.
Two: Jimmy Clausen is on the verge of becoming a stud and completely silencing his critics, including this guy. He is making good decisions 95% of the time. He threw for 300 yards today and any time you do that it means you're doing something right. I'm really happy with JC.
How good is this guy??? I mean, the first pass of the game was a laser to Rudolph that he had to put right there or else it was picked. Wow. His zip is incredible; his poise, touch, leadership, reading through his progressions, all incredible. And his mobility has improved as well. Mark my words, he'll be better than Brady (possibly by the end of this year - no joke), and I'm a HUGE Brady guy.
I'm with you on so many things though:
1. Running game: pathetic, embarrassing.
2. Defense: That was a bad performance. We got pushed around by a buch of Stanford Trees for pete's sake. I've been touting the D's improvement, but that was a bad day bro. Really bad. The turnovers saved us again, and the sacks (finally!!!!!) were huge, but I'd really like to see us step up. Brian Smith, my fav player, got his ass kicked in the first half. Watch the tape. Stanford could have ran the ball all day but stupidly started to pass in that 3rd quarter. Our D-line got no push on run plays.
3. Weis, I love you, but you have to step on a team's throat. The 2nd fg try was not the call. Period. That should have been a 35-14 rout.
4. Floyd - see you in the 1st round stud. After your jr. year. Wow.
5. Get Tate the ball more. Be creative. He's going to be doubled more now, so instead of throwing that lateral pass twice to Grimes, our slowest receiver, get it to Tate. Run that fake end-around on the run plays that so many teams run to freeze the safeties and d-ends (that will help Allen), and then give him the reverse in the 3rd quarter.
6. Rudolph -Another great ND tight-end.
All that being said, we're 4-1 baby!!! And we look like a team on the rise. This is a good time to an ND fan. A true fan. We can all see the light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately, unless we put a whole game together, we won't beat NC on the road next week. But we are going to be scary good sooner than I lot of people think.
Sorry if I've repeated what others have already said, I haven't read the other threads yet...
