Hello yall.

My dad is a letter carrier for the postal service, and I want to remind you all that Saturday, May 14, is the Nation wide STAMP OUT HUNGER food drive. Just put your non-perishable food out by your mailbox that day, and your letter carrier will pick it up. All food stays local, last year they got 77.1 million pounds of food. So do what you can, give what you can. You never know it could be you who needs a little help someday. :) Thanks!

That's great! I really push this one, because it's simple. Everyone has some can of something in their cupboard they can part with. It doesn't cost you money, no one will bug you non stop...ya know? It's just a great thing to give to.

I don't intend to ruin the spirit of the cause:

but if I were a mailman who had a walking route and assuming people on that particular route decided to donate, would it not be extremely inconvenient to have to carry bags of food around while delivering mail until they made it back to their truck?

Gibblets, They don't do that...usually their family members to help pick up food, or the walkers get a truck and park it to put the food in.

roger, Roger. I was just wondering about the logistical challenges.

Speaking of mailmen: Classic story- Some of you may be able to correct me on my accuracy of the postal service pocedures- but I guess the USPS does not want the mail to be delivered too fast for whatever reason so the mailmen are forced to pace themselves. This pace is monitored via barcodes on certain mail boxes and each time the mailman passes that box, he has to scan it with a barcode reader.

So this one particular mailman decided he was going to take the barcodes off of each box. He finished his route as quickly as possible and would go to the bar have a few beers and every so often he'd scan the bar code while sitting at the bar so it would look as if he was following procedure. He eventually got caught by one of those annoying undercover news guys.

I have a few things in the cupboard that I could leave outside on the steps, but I think the homeless guys would take them because we dont have a mailbox, just a shared mail slot for 3 apartments. I guess either way someone would be getting helped...

Actually, the barcodes came from routes taking too long. There's been a lot of crap going on with the postal service for a few years. They had people following them to see how long their routes should run. The bar codes are to eliminate overtime. Say for example, you beep your first house at 9am, they want you to beep the last one with plenty of time to get back to the post office and clock out.

Now, if you're like my dad, he's 52 but he still walks all 16 miles of his route, and he doesn't play around, so he does have to pace himself, but that's what the barcodes were for, was to eliminate over time. All we hear about from my dad is either he walked 10 miles to school up hill both ways, or about the post office.

The government keeps trying to mess with the USPS, ending saturday delivery would cause 87,000 people to lose their job. USPS is the only government run business that does not use tax dollars, so of course they want to pinch all their pennies!! LOL.

My mail lady hauls azz! If I am outside doing yard work or what not she always finds a quick second to shoot the doo doo with me then, I kid you not, sprints the next 6 houses or so to the end. I have to say my respect for mail "folk" around my parts is big. The only mail trucks I ever see are at the post office parked and dirty. We don't use them.

I actually heard that FedEx and UPS can only exist under the USPS's authority and the USPS can basically tell those companies that USPS is taking over their functions. Can you confirm this?

Pretty solid distance your dad walks each day. Thats pretty insane.

I am not sure about that...I will ask my dad.
He can drive his route, but he'd rather walk. I tell ya, I couldn't do it. He was out walking in waist deep snow this winter, he's climbed over trees from storms, walks in the rain, and heat.

One time though, this old man who was 93 was trying to mow his lawn when we had a heat advisory for 110 degree weather, so my dad told him to go in the house, and he went and mowed it himself. I thought that was pretty cool.

Mr. Gibblets,

My dad said FedEx and UPS are their own company. They do have the authority to deliver their merchandise, because the USPS is like a grandfather company, they can deliver UPS stuff and FedEx stuff, but those two don't deliver USPS stuff. ya digg?

And you owe me big time I just had to sit through another USPS lecture!! :p

Don't forget that items such as toilet paper, hand soap and diapers are welcomed along with canned food.
