Spring and Summer Practice

Ok, so I know spring football is limited to 15 practice days. But what else goes on during spring and what are the rules on what is allowed and what isn't allowed.

Is the 15-day practice limit just full squad practices?

Obviously the team members can hit the weight room by themselves. But can the team schedule weight room and weight training sessions? Seems like they can also go over film.

And when can a team start summer practice? What are the limits during summer?

Anyone know?

The Players can pretty much do what they want, HOWEVER< it cannot be organized by the staff.

Typically the players do small scrimmages. I have heard the QBstend to hang out and pass a lot to their WRs. I have heard of a number of 7v7's as well.

But outside of the 15 days of formal practice, nothing is directed by the coaching staff until August.

The guys workout a lot in the weight room and I believe the staff can be there with no issues.

Correct...but players can show up early, etc.

LMI, when the 2 a days start, that seems to be the beginning of their formal season, but do they usually get a high percentage of guys earlier to do what you were talking about (player-led 7v7, lifting, ...), and when does this usually occur?

How about the incoming freshmen. When do they usually start showing up enmasse? Do some usually try to show earlier in the summer to get a jump-start on the fall camp?

I can't remember when the Freshman show up. I know it's a few weeks before school starts. However, a number of guys tend to live off campus when they are older and they hang out on campus during the summer and practice. Some guys go home and work with trainers. It's really depends on the person in question.

JPham is a current student and might have more info.

Usually Frosh show up as soon as possible. Last year Mike Ragone couldn't show up until he had a summer course completed for his HS. Typically though, the week after they graduate, they show up for summer classes, or summer conditioning.

If it is of any help to you guys I always keep a calandar recording personal data and Notre Dame info. Here is what I have written down for 2007.

JUNE 17 2007: All freshmen report.

AUGUST 6 2007: Training camp starts.

I'm pretty sure 2008's will be within a day or so of last years postings.

Thats what I was hoping to hear. Just like to hear of the new guys getting plenty of time early as possible so they aren't so far behind the team.

SoCal, I think there is a conspiracy against me repping you. Every time I try it says I have to spread it around. Just know its coming your way again. Thanks for the schedule. I am often too lazy to look it up on other sites. Thats why I spend most of my time logged on at work to this and GH! :thx:

I know quite a few athletes here at ND. They all have their meals and workouts planned out for each day, separate from the team. This is why you will see them continuously eating and drinking in class to meet their daily intake requirements, even in the off-season. Also, someone posted a schedule of practices. Don't even try to watch, because they are all closed to the public. Only some are available to the press, one for the public at the beginning of the school year [i think], and one is for student appreciation day. The Blue and Gold game is the best opportunity to see the upcoming squad, plus tickets are really cheap.

Watching Practice

Watching Practice

I know practices are closed; however, last year as I was walking with the band to the Loftus center I found a great way to sneak a look at practice. If you go to the outdoor tennis courts and go to the top of the bleachers, it offers a great view of the practice fields. All you have to do is pretend like you are watching tennis practice. Also, I know that most if not all of the football players are on campus during the summer. They are taking classes to keep up so they can graduate on time.

it may be on a local radio station, but i doubt it would be televised. it's not like they run all the secret plays during the game, but it would be extra film an opponent could obtain.

No problem, I, too, can't wait for practice to start. With the abysmal season we endured last year, some redemption is in order for this season. The OL is the absolute key for this team. If we can't control the line of scrimmage on the offensive side of the ball, it's going to kill our D agains this year. We're already thin enough on that side of the ball, we don't need anymore help in making our D get worn out any sooner than they need to.
